Even if you think they both suck, pick which one you think sucks less.

 

Avril calls herself the Anti-Britney, and obviously see's herself as being miles ahead of Spears. Britney has no response.

Avril

I most definately pick Britney. Britney is constantly changing, but thats entertainment, and she's an entertainer. If David Bowie had stayed Ziggy Stardust for his whole career people would demand their money back.

 

Britney has a lot more talent, she's an excellent stage worker, she has a phenomenal voice, she looks better (But I dont think she's beautiful). She doesnt sing live usually, but that's not what it's about. Some people have to understand, you go to see Oasis to hear the quality of the music, kids go to see Britney to see an entertaining show, and she does put a lot of effort into her concerts. I'd rather watch Britney's choreography then listen to a terrible sounding Lavigne live.

 

And if you think Britney's voice is simply a studio engineered boob job, she's been hitting those notes since she was 8 years old in nationwide competitions, and she's only got better. She's had to work a lot harder than Avril Lavigne, Britney had a bad childhood. She travelled constantly and had to keep working around the clock to achieve results. Sure it's easy to look at someone's bubble-gum pop image and go "This is weak shit!" but some people do have to work very hard and still maintain no respect at all from more underground audiences who sit on their ass all day.

 

Avril Lavigne IS studio engineered, her music is oppressive, bland and stereotypical, her whole image is bent on repressing against pop music, when she is a huge pop icon at the moment. She may be a star right now, but she will never be a superstar legend, you can always tell that in a person when they constantly bicker about other artists and groups and also how they have to promote themselves. People like Britney do talk about their shows and CD's, whereas people like Avril have to analyse themselves and put themselves into a form of context, like "Punker" or "Rock chick", or "Anti-Britney", which is just pathetic.

If you mean personality wise, I'd much rather hang around Britney then Avril. Avril's a stupid kid, she's a wannabe skater mall-rat, and she bullshits all the time. I'll never forget many of the things she says, like once "Well me and my friend in High School swore at a teacher and then she chased after us and we grabbed our 'boards and skated down the hall as all the teachers came out of their class rooms and waddled their fingers at us", BHAHAHAHAHAH- .... HA

Avril is one of the least charismatic people I've ever seen. She is a complete joke. At least Britney has some dignity - she might not have a lot, but she's got more than Avril has ever had, or will ever have.

It's Avril, even though she's not hotter. I heard an Avril song one time in which she had a pretty nice voice in it.. But I think this was a slower song.

I might have an interesting perspective of this, because one of my professors knows the person who wrote and produced Avril's first record, and another one mixed one of Britney Spears' albums.

 

At any rate, both of them had nothing but negative things to say about both, but the impression I got was that Avril Lavigne is as completely full of herself in private as she is in public, and actually thinks she IS the "anti-Britney" (when she's so clearly the exact same thing in so many ways). Inside secret: the only reason she's listed as a co-writer on any of her songs is that her manager made a deal with the actual writers (ie., "You let Avril have part of the copyright, and we'll use your song and make you a lot of money").

 

So I picked Britney. She's a complete phony too (and I would argue with the claim that she has a phenominal voice, because to me it's nails on a chalkboard even on the studio albums), but at least she's not trying to pretend that she's a serious artist or anything.

 

It's the same reason I'd take the Backstreet Boys over Evanescence or somebody like that.

I'll give Britney credit for at least being a talented performer, but I don't think she has half of the brains (business savvy), charisma, or above all else, singing voice of any of those other people you mentioned (and Kate Bush and James Brown did write a lot of their songs).

 

"Phony" wasn't really the right word for me to use, but I still think you're giving her too much credit. She's got talent, yes, but in my opinion, almost everybody else in the world of popular music has more.
