[THIRD PLACE PLAYOFF] Germany v Portugal
That was a good game- the best I've seen this tournament. Lots of good shots by both teams.

X-Files 2 -the Movie?!?!
There's been talk of a second movie ever since the first. I've heard before that the series ending was specifically written with a second movie in mind, which is why things weren't tied up as tightly as they could have been. I hope they make one. Should be soonish, though for consistancy's (and memory's) sake.

It's Black To Front, Chris
Since when did anything random that the Sun had to say actually matter?

Alcahol Tastes Crap Unless You Drink A Lot of It
I think it might be that the alcohol numbs your tastebuds after a couple of sips. Or it could be like when you walk into a room where someone's been eating fish, and the stench is overpowering, but within a couple of minutes you can't even smell it anymore. It's a big part of the reason I don't drink, though. Even the stuff people say is supposed to taste good just doesn't, at least to me. I wouldn't drink to get drunk ever, so drinking something that tastes nasty just because doesn't make sense to me. My brother got me to try Baileys recently- he said it would taste good. It did, but I was like "yeah, but it would taste so much better if it didn't taste like alcohol!"

Have U ever Met A Celebrity?
Well, I met one of my favorite authors, Terry Brooks, at a booksigning once, and one of my favorite artists (illustrator, really) Ted Nasmith, and talked to him for a long time about painting stuff- but that's a long story. But the big one at the Juno awards will make my stomoch bottom out again if I talk about it and I'll start squee-ing and going all fangirly, so I'll just let you read what I already wrote. Here's my first reaction here: http://www.coldplaying.com/forum/showthread.php?t=27342&page=9 and a longer write-up here: http://www.coldplaying.com/forum/showthread.php?t=27342&page=14 My friend autumjoy posted much more about the encounter and pictures on later pages too...

Group wants Americans to adopt phonetic spelling!
There are also groups that want to ban well known books like Tom Sawyer from libraries for "offensive material". They haven't gotten very far either. :dozey: Language is a living, organic thing. You can't just have a commitee that decides to change it, anymore than the prudes who complain about a lack of respect for standard spelling are ever going to get their way. Sure, some of the changes might stick if they tried, but it would be in the form of hybrid or inconsitant spellings and more illogic. (I'm not any sort of an expert by any stretch of the imagination, but philology is a bit of a facination of mine. Thank J.R.R. Tolkien) Really what they're doing is blaming the spelling for the schools not having the resources to teach. Chinese is pure rote memorization and it works. And for the record, I still spell it honour, labour, colour, theatre, and centre, because Canadians are just confused- and proud of it. :D

*~*Coldplayer Piccys*~*
When I was in twelth grade, the guys in my class made up this silly game that they played whenever the teacher was out of the room. They would undo their shoelaces, one of them would throw a shoe up in the air, and all the others would kick their shoes off trying to hit it. (While the girls tried to stay as far away from the madness as possible. Silly boys.) I freaked out for a moment when I saw that pic, because it really seriously looks like they're playing that game. Total flashback moment. :stunned: :laugh3: edit: yay! that was my 800th post and I didn't even notice. :juggle:

England vs Portugal
Thanks for the link, Sally. Well, there's no way anyone (but Rooney himself) is going to convince me that it was on purpose- though it did look sickeningly painful. The guy was fouling Rooney first and pulling him down on top of him, grabbing at his jersey. that said, I'm not 100% convinced it was accidental either. Pity the ref let it get that far.

[Enough Rope] Coldplay Not Music To Martin's Ears
But how can you know where you're going if you don't know where you've been. I write stories, not songs, but as painful as it can be, I like looking back at my old stuff not for inspiration but to understand where I am and how to be different in the future. Sometimes looking back can be a revelation.

Bush condems newpapers on bank disclosures
There is more than one way to hurt a nation. Letting your guard down in the name of fighting terrorism is one of them. Especially where the war on terror isn't going to end anytime soon- terrorism is a state of mind, not a nation-state you can defeat. And many of the terrorist cells are home-grown, like in Toronto and London. Any yahoo with a beef can become a terrorist if they want to. Are we going to throw away our rights in fear for the potentially long duration of this war when statistically we should be alot more afraid of drunk driving and cancer? (I'm saying us because this sort of stuff is happening in Canada too, and anything the US does can profoundly affect us.) Someone mentioned D-day, and how it worked because it was a massive secret. Very true. It was also a one-time operation with a definative start and hopeful endpoint. Something else happened during WWII. Something terrible. American citicens were rounded up by the American government and sent to concentration camps on American soil as prisoners of war. Men, women, and children all were uprooted and not even given access to basic things like school for several years. Why? Because they were of Japanese decent. It didn't matter if they were valuble members of their communities. It didn't matter if the last people in their family who even saw Japan or spoke Japanese were their grandparents. Because of their ethnic heritage, they were the enemy. Sure, it saved many lives. It's safe to say that quite a few of the people who were rounded up were sympathetic with the Japanese during the war and may have tried something. It was (arguably) effective. Just like some of the crap that the government is pulling now. But how many innocent lives were destroyed in the process out of fear? Having been taught about that incident as a little girl, about how it was the shame of a nation, I had always hoped that we were smart enough now not to let something like that happen again. Are we willing to go back there again, just with a different enemy? Are we any better than that? I sure hope so, but it doesn't look like it. Letting people at least know what was going on so that we have the chance to ask questions BEFORE it gets that bad is a good place to start. I can't believe I'm standing up for the NYT- I can't stand them, but in this case I think they did the right thing. It would do alot more harm to let things go on without at least stopping for a moment and asking a couple of questions first.

Do You Take Smilies Literally?
I usually go by the expression as much as the supposed meaning. :dozey: usually seems to mean a sarcastic "yeah, sure, whatever". This one seems to be angst as much as illness  This one isn't very charming :charming: This one? :chinese: Uh... I have many asian friends- none of whom have buck teeth.

England vs Portugal
I thought the red card was for loosing his temper and pushing Ronaldo?! Not accidentally stepping on the other guy- who was fouling Rooney when he tripped from what I saw. Ronaldo was trying to provoke alot of people- Crouch must have the patience of a saint with the way he was getting in his face yelling at him at one point. I would have wanted to punch him if it was me. He might be a nice person the rest of the time, but that day Ronaldo made me think of Draco Malfoy.

Why England?
Well as far as silly girls who don't like soccer but suddenly follow England go, I think your answer is named David Beckham. As for Anglophiles in general, I'm not sure, I'd have to think about it...

England vs Portugal
 I don't think I've been that tense over a match ever. Good for England getting their act together finally, once they were a man down. Too bad it didn't make a difference in the end. :bigcry:

The Snow Patrol Thread
Oi... that's not good! Hope you find it. I always put tickets inside the cover of a certain hardcovered book until the night of the show so I don't loose them. Works really well as long as I always use the same book.

Is too much of a GOOD thing...BAD?
Well, I don't know if it comes across online or not, but I'm a bit of an ADD poster child. That said, no matter how much I get the urge to move on or do something else or change whatever it is, when something is really, trully worth holding onto, I set my will to hang on for dear life in spite of myself. It's rough sometimes, for instance after 5 years of moving onto something new every year or so, that second year of college almost killed me. But there are some things in life that you are just never going to get that good again, and some chances that will never come back. Those things are worth fighting for, even if it's your own self that you're fighting with.

Is too much of a GOOD thing...BAD?
But become expressed in different ways over time. Even after 24 years, my parents can still completly surprise me (and each other) and as for things staying the same, well stability can be important too. It's not like chocolate- eat too much chocolate and you feel sick. Know that someone's there for you for as long as they can be and you feel safe.

Rate the latest movie you've seen
Syriana - 9/10 I may have already known anything revealed in the movie, and I'm sure much of it was at least slightly inaccurate, but seriously- This is one of the scariest movies I've ever seen.

Is too much of a GOOD thing...BAD?
I doubt it, because people always change. Slowly, but drastically. Chocolate will always be chocolate. If you marry someone, you don't promise to stay with the exact person standing at the altar with you, you promise to stay with them for the whole arc of their life.

Post piccies of the sexy Mr Berryman..
I haven't seen the movie, but I can see a bit of similarity in the actor's imdb pic: http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0388933/

Is too much of a GOOD thing...BAD?
There's a chocolate factory in Halifax- well, Dartmouth, acutally. I once heard (indirectly) from someone who worked there that out of the dozens of employees, only one or two can still stand to eat chocolate they're surrounded by it so much. And that's chocolate! If you can get sick and tired of that, what hope is there for anything in the world?

The Award Winning Voice Thread
Makes sense... the Irish is there too, but you've never lost all the little quirks specific to Toronto. (Of course people from Toronto say east-coasters talk funny, so... meh)
