Hope you are splendiferous and feverish with the anticipation of the NEW and the best album to date! Yes I went there! Suffice to say this album is full of 11 great tracks that I'm sure you will love! The record is under 45minutes, something we've been trying to achieve for 10 years and covers considerable new ground as a band. This record feels very exciting for ourselves and hopefully you guys had no idea what kind of album to expect. We didn't...well, we had an idea of course....but only at the end.
After long deliberation we asked Brian Deck to produce the album, we couldn't have made a better choice. Brian's talent was obvious on Iron and Wine's great album The Shepard's Dog, and we knew he would bring much to the Gomez table. We we're privileged to have our friends Amy Milan from Stars and Broken Social Scene, Stuart Bogie from Anti-Balas and Cellist, Oliver Kraus to introduce instruments and styles we could not otherwise.
Myself and Ian have learnt many new tricks with our computers since How We Operate, even devoting a room of the studio to our electronic experimentations and calling it Kraftwerk World! Many Germans bands have subtly influenced our music for years, but on parts of the new record it's become unmistakable for example, the end of Mix, which is very heavily influenced by one of out favourite bands the Notwist. Aside from this, I unconsciously seemed to be writing songs with a bluesy/indie theme, Airstream Driver, Win Park Slope, along with the more experimental obvious influences like Tomorrow Never Knows, heard on the closing track Sunset Gates. Ben's guitar playing has become even more cooler and erratic, the likes of which can be especially heard in the middle soundscape of 'Other Plans'. Ben has also been playing of late with Sam Genders from Tunng and The Accidental, which has led him to writing Lost Track, one of the folkier sounding songs, a major highlight of A New Tide. All five of us devoted our time passionately throughout this record whilst it took many diversions and drifted through various possible musical outcomes, we hope you listen carefully and love what we made.
So what's on the cards? South by South West festival and US and UK tour are right around the corner, all the while we are beavering away behind the scenes to get everything into place. You can expect a new website, coming very soon, a very limited edition 7 inch Airstream Driver with previously unreleased track 'Edit' on April 18th, this is only available in Independent stores. We have a new Twitter page which has been left to grow naturally and will be full of updates more and more as we're on the road, however I feel this might get out of hand, not mentioning any names...Blackie. New posters and merch are being designed as we speak and we are looking to film behind the scenes to put on to the new site. We will be focusing new attention to older material, relearning tunes and reworking songs along the way. Shit we might even play a cover version if I convince anyone!
On behalf of Ben, Tom, Ian and Blackie and myself, I'd like to say we are always massively grateful that you still show up, that you still care and that you still like us even when we're shit! Or drunk, just kidding. It's means a great deal to see familiar faces as we play across England, Europe, Australia and the States and hearing of how the good word of Gomez is being spread! Amen!
We don't say it to you and the fans near enough, but thank you, thank you very much. One last thing, at the next gigs I want to see you all moshing, rioting, stage diving, throwing Ian into the crowd, let's go crazy!
Thank you,
Olly Peacock
