  1. I forgot they were coming out with a new album. Thanks for the reminder. :D I liked Melody AM but it's not the greatest of downtempo electronica... pleasant enough for me to want to hear the new one though.
  2. WHO KEEPS BUMPING OLD THREADS FROM FOUR WEEKS AGO?!?! GOD LET THE PAST DIE!!!!! :P
  3. Don't quote me on this but you probably will need a receiver because I've never seen a turntable with an amp inside it before that wasn't part of a whole big turntable/cassette/radio combo thing. So unless it has all that you'll probably need a receiver. You don't plug cords into speakers, speakers have cords themselves that you plug into a receiver.
  4. Im really not seeing many decent new threads :disappointed: There are some fun ones, but most of the time I find myself coming on here and LOOKING for something to respond to, looking hard. I was going to make some stupid joke about waiting a year and then bumping THIS thread, but yeah, what Reilly says sounds about right. Also, if people are genuinely bothered by old threads being brought up because they take space from new stuff they probably need to stop taking things so seriously because THIS IS A GODDAMNED INTERNET MESSAGE BOARD.
  5. The best pop music can move you in a purely superficial way and carry a deeper meaning if you actually listen to it. "Hey Ya" fits perfectly in this category, I just think that most people ignored or didn't hear the cynical underlying message of it because they were too busy shouting along with catchphrases like "shake it like a polaroid picture." Another factor is that I think society in general these days is a bit jaded and regards any music that overtly aspires to more than a pleasant melody with extreme caution. Anytime it happens artists get slapped with the "pretentious" or "pompous" label or something (see: U2, although their more recent material isn't a good example of that because it... uh.. sucks). As for other contemporary artists that might fit your description of what makes somebody like Neil young great, I think The Flaming Lips might be it. And maybe older Belle and Sebastian. Ben Folds tries but is way too cheesy or smarmy or something. And I think Sufjan Stevens is every bit as good a songwriter as Neil Young, and carries the same sort of emotional weight in everything he does, but he's not exactly a pop star. Just thinking out loud.
  6. They're both Gus Van Sant films, so I think it's sort of a wash. :P But other than that... all I have to say is YOU'RE THE MAN NOW, DOG! (sorry, that still cracks me up)
  7. I think Oasis might be the least relevant band in the world (which is why it's so appropriate that they're touring with Jet), but I don't hate them. It's pretty much complete indifference.

  9. Pistons beat the 76ers (who I like for obvious reasons, if you look in my location), plus there's that whole Larry Brown the Backstabbing Asshole thing, so.... I was mildly happy that the Spurs won. To be honest though, I didn't really care all that much, because Rip Hamilton and Rasheed Wallace are both from this area (I actually know somebody who went to high school with Rip Hamilton, and I also have cousins who went/are going to that school). So I don't dislike the Pistons all that much.
  10. He just tends to make the board messy and full of pointless arguments and bafflingly stupid threads. And it's easier to just get rid of him than to make everybody start ignoring him.
  11. whoa... BLAST FROM THE PAST.
  12. Oh, and are we talking about Albie here? He's FINALLY gone? (again)
  13. Nah, I'm not going. I hate to say it, but I think Coldplay have finally outgrown the venue size and price range I'm willing to put up with to see them. :/ Not a big loss though, I've seen them three times now anyway (including their first ever Philly show) :P
  14. Give me a break. You guys need to learn how to take criticism of your favorite band. I don't really agree with this guy's argument (which is why I'm posting here and not at a Dressy Bessy message board), but he doesn't really have overly negative things to say about Coldplay, and I hardly see how his opinion qualifies him as "stupid." All he's saying is he likes Dressy Bessy more and thinks they deserve more attention than Coldplay. There are lots of bands that I would make the same argument for, even as a Coldplay fan. Also, I'd take flawed criticism that's at least thoughtful and intelligent over a commercial radio station with a 20 song playlist that repeats itself six times a day with some obnoxious DJ chattering about the weather, like pretty much every other non-college radio station has right now. It's why I like NPR. As far as the drumming thing is concerned, I think the NPR guy (I didn't catch his name) misses the point. Coldplay isn't about drumming. Will serves the band perfectly, but it's not a role that couldn't be adequately filled by most competent drummers. Pointing out drumming as Coldplay's flaw is sort of like disliking a painting because of the frame it's in. Hell, has this guy ever heard a Beatles record? It doesn't get much more straight-forward and no-frills than Ringo Starr, but nobody thinks the Beatles were bad because of it. Like awmonroe said: one of the best things a drummer can do is not stick out.
  15. What in the hell is going on in this place lately? Seriously, I don't know.
  16. I'm too lazy to read through six pages so I don't know if this has already been mentioned or not but.... LEAN ON ME, WHEN YOU'RE NOT STRONG, AND I'LL BE YOUR FRIEND, I'LL HELP YOU CARRY OOOOOOOOON... *sways* oh and "Friends of Mine" by the Zombies. and "Christmas at the Zoo" by the Flaming Lips.
  17. uugggghhhhhhhhh. As one of the millions of people who take antidepressants, I really want to be pissed off at Tom Cruise for being such an arrogant asshole. But I can't, because he's speaking out of total ignorance. Despite his claims to the contrary, he doesn't have a damn clue what he's talking about (that is to say, what it's like to actually be one of the people who are being helped by the drugs he so callously condemns). He'd be better off if somebody just explained to him why he's so wrong than he would be if we all just gave him the middle finger salute he deserves. Of couse, he seems to be well beyond reason at this point anyway, so what's the point?
  18. I don't care how cliche it is, The Joshua Tree is still my favorite.
  19. I think it would be fun if it was called "Batman Begins: The Return of the Beginning of Batman Continues."
  20. ALL ELSE HAS FAILED, THANK GOD I FOUND THIS THREAD!!!!!!!! :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :)
  21. As a heterosexual male I'm probably not the target audience for this thread, but every time I see some dude trying to impress girls by playing his guitar outside right by the entrance to his dorm or something I want to laugh at him. :P
  22. How in the hell did arnie get in here?!
  23. It reminds me of the Polyphonic Spree. What with the huge, ridiculous, over-the-top up-with-peopleness. Which is exactly why I love it.
  24. He'd probably take that as a compliment. :wink3:
  25. Wow. That might be the first time I've ever seen anybody say that.
