  5. Viva La freebie By PETE SAMSON Deputy Bizarre Editor Published: Today COLDPLAY star CHRIS MARTIN tonight has the opportunity to add to the three shiny new Grammys on the mantelpiece of his lavish London mansion. But refreshingly, the rock superstar with an A-list Hollywood wife has not lost sight of the most important people in the band’s incredible success — the fans. Four nominations ... Coldplay In the year that has gained the band gongs and sales records all over the world, Chris plans to give away a FREE live album to people who go to their huge shows this summer. He hopes the gift will thank fans for their support and for parting with their hard-earned cash in difficult financial times. Frontman Chris says: “What we want to do is try to giveaway a live album for free. “We’re playing a lot of shows in the summer and I think what we would like to do is — bearing in mind the recession we are in — record the live album then give it as a gift. “We are just trying to work out how to do that. “It’s obviously a bit tricky in terms of record contracts and things but it would be great. “It’s a way of saying thank you. “It’s a tough economy and people are paying a lot of money for tickets. “We are trying to work out a way that, when you hand your ticket in at the door, you get given the recording. “It would be such a cool thing to do. “We just feel really grateful at the moment for all the support we get from our fans.” Coldplay started their brilliant Viva La Vida tour last June and they return to the UK this September for some massive stadium shows. Their impressive attention to detail and desire to give fans value for money has made the gigs among the best on the circuit. Chris adds: “We are touring until November. We fly straight to Australia after the Brits, which is crazy. “At least we’ve had a chance to watch Batman in The Dark Knight a few times on flights.” The band — bass player GUY BERRYMAN, drummer WILL CHAMPION, Chris and guitarist JONNY BUCKLAND — picked up Song Of The Year, Best Rock Album and Best Vocal Pop Performance at the Grammys in Los Angeles earlier this month. Tonight the boys are up for Best British Group, Best British Album for Viva La Vida Or Death And All His Friends, Best British Single for Viva La Vida and Best British Live Act. But despite the band’s triumphs over the Pond, Chris, 31, is still filled with excitement about The Brits — as well as nerves. It is refreshing to hear a top musician admit he enjoys picking up awards. He says: “I’m really looking forward to The Brits. It’s the closest thing we have to the Olympics in the music world. “It’s a chance to see who is good and who is bad and who you’ve got to compete with over the next few years. “And hopefully, someone will get drunk and do something funny.” So, Brits or Grammys, which are the best? Chris says: “Asking whether the Brits or Grammys are more important is like asking what Spice Girl you would rather pull. They’re all great. “I’m happy to win a TV Quick Award. Any time you get an award you feel proud. boozy “Every time you win something it’s like someone has attached a balloon to your arm. It gives you a little lift. “I have respect for people who don’t give a s**t about awards. But I like them. I can’t pretend I don’t. I think they’re fun.” And he reckons the Brits are extra-special because our musicians’ reluctance to big themselves up makes for the most controversial — and boozy — night of the music calendar. He explains: “The Brits is fun because it’s not in our national character to celebrate our own greatness. “That’s why people get really hammered and why it’s always so scandalous. Because, deep down, we don’t feel comfortable with the idea of all that self-congratulation. “That’s what makes the Brits unique. Everyone is secretly celebrating the fact there is a lot of good music out there — but on the surface they want to look like they don’t give a s**t. “People like that, though. People like British people because we’re never that happy. “When we travel around, others really like the fact that British people always think they are rubbish.” Chris’s self deprecating personality is very British. Will they be victorious? ... Coldplay And the singer — married to superstar US actress GWYNETH PALTROW — also stands out for not caring too much about maintaining the rock ’n’ roll image that so many other musicians think makes them look cool. He believes a breakdown of these musical cliches is what has allowed such varied British acts — from ROBERT PLANT to ESTELLE — to triumph at the Grammys and beyond. British acts walked away with an incredible 16 awards at the American event last week Chris says: “The Brits did very well this year. I think we are a bit less tribal these days. “You can listen to anything at any time. You don’t need to just be interested in one type of music, which I think is a good thing. A bit of the snobbery has gone. “You can be into RADIOHEAD one minute and KATY PERRY the next, you don’t need to worry about it. I don’t worry about it anyway — I was listening to Katy Perry this morning. I tend to get obsessed with a different thing every day or every week. “My favourite thing at the moment is Hot N’ Cold by Katy Perry. “And I’m going through a big BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN phase. It’s insane. “After doing something like winning a Grammy it’s good to listen to someone much better than you. “Bruce is so far ahead of us, it’s good to be put in your place a bit. “I suppose you could say it puts things in perspective. “You could start getting a big head — then you listen to something like Born In The USA. “Hearing that makes you think, ‘OK, we’re still s**t’.” How very British. http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/showbiz/bizarre/article2247109.ece
