im 3yrs into law school and with our essays we're usually expected to put together all our research and reach our own conclusion using our information. but you're right, most of the time i cant help but feel that there is a right and wrong opinion and i spend most of my time trying to work out which is "right" rather than forming my own opinion. but with legal papers you can argue your way to a good mark using either side because there is usually a degree of subjectivity involved when you're looking at philosophical things (which is what all our essays tend to be about) rather than the black letter of the law.

alright a couple of things blink 182 has been confirmed as headliners for the 2011 BDO by danny clayton who i would say is a reliable source as he is one of the main presenters on channel v who are a principal sponsor of the event. unless the rest of the line up is mind blowing i think i'll be missing this. but im all but set for sunset sounds. :D just came back from tame impala. they only did a 60min set but it was brilliant. the sound was clear and sharp for a change we werent being deafened by the reverb. the band went from song to song with great coherence and confidence and i really admired that. even better was the fact that instead of doing the usual thing and only playing new songs. they played 4 songs from innerspeaker including solitude is bliss which got a great reaction but they also through most of the songs from the EP and their cover of Remember Me which was the highlight of the show. cant wait to see them again at sunset sounds, for the 4th time!! haha

caribou, BSS and besnard lakes also got a little airplay earlier in the year with the lead singesl but nothing note worthy. im still pissed off about crystal castles being ignored.

well the track 59 sound was very very killers like. but the bulk of their stuff is your normal american garage punk but with a greater sense of identity and stronger message. the lead singer is a quite brandon flowers like but with more balls. not quite top 10 material for me but a great listen nevertheless.

totally agree with this!! not really my type of music but im really loving this album.

mind you im not saying we will no longer have any quality bands like U2. i just dont see those "quality" acts stadium trotting the way U2 do. the music scene in this day & age is far too diverse for one act to dominate in that way, which is a good thing i think.

ive always wanted to see footage of the band at their peak, that is around the mid 90s. so far ive only come across grainy footage of their 1995 australian tour. then tonight i stumbled upon this. footage of the band in 1993 at a canadian festival. Simon Neil most probably feels indebted to Muse for allowing his band to support them at wembley stadium. so his judgment is a little clouded. nevertheless it will be interesting to see where Muse are in 15yrs time and if their status is anything like U2's. i still think U2 are the last of the true megabands (beatles, stones, led zep, floyd and queen) i just dont see coldplay and muse ever reaching those levels.

^^ good and interesting taste in music. you'll get along just fine here :D we'll start to shortlist the best aus albums of the year towards the end of october. so keep an ear out for good aussie music! aria award noms are out on the 28th. i will be absolutely livid if tame impala, angus n julia and cloud control are not recognised for album of the year.

i havent seen U2 live so im not completely qualified to comment on this. but i would say the reputations of both bands' live shows have suffered a little due to lackluster releases last year. but i have seen muse live, in a stadium setting this year and the poor quality of their new album really hurt the quality of the show. because of U2's massive back catalogue i just dont see the their new music making much a difference. but you take both band's at their respective peaks and theyre very much comparable. welcome back mate personally think the Tool rumours are bullshit. still pretty confident that KoL are headlining and arcade fire are going to play second fiddle (although im quietly hoping they do their own tour) at the moment im thinking that Maynard will be bringing down A Perfect Circle instead. at the moment my post exam schedule includes, guns n roses, korn, muse, linkin park and U2 and thats just the first 2 weeks after i finish exams lol. i might tone things down after that, maybe just restrict myself to interpol, the national and arcade fire for the rest of summer.

if thats his first mistake all year. why isnt he coming first in the championship?

i dont think i/we properly welcomed you to our thread. so hello and welcome :D if you dont mind could we get a quick run down on you. which city are you from? how old are you? who are your favourite bands? who are your favourite aussie bands? who have you seen live? have you heard many 2010 albums? cos we're really looking to have more people on our panel/team to choose this thread favourite aussie album of the year. at the moment i think theres 7 of us, but imo 8 would be an ideal number. im sure we'll learn lots more about you over the coming months. :D

just listened to Whatever People Say.....for the squillionth time and i swear the last 90secs of A Certain Romance would have to be some of the best guitar rock ever written. the way the two guitars just dance around each other is brilliant.

well they canceled their spot at splendour in the grass to record the debut. a friend of a friend is a roadie for the band and he tells me that they're making the most of their american success at the moment so a LP is most likely early next year. well im aussie too as is everyone else on this thread (except briggins who is canadian(what happens when an aussie is left in the fridge) and eddie who is kiwi (but aussie when he's cool)) but there just hasnt been an aussie band who has delivered album after album of quality music to the point where i can say yeah i wanna be passionate about that band. i guess i'll stick to loving this scene as a whole.

before i forget. im loving the new children collide album. it is missing some great things that the debut possessed but at the same time theyve added a new facet to their music, they just sound much tighter and more confident in their music. in terms of pure musicianship and band chemistry they would have to be one of the best in the land.

^^ you obviously didnt get a real mac then. the only thing that has ever crashed on my mac is MSN, which is a windows product. i dont think twice before downloading anything or clicking a link. as long you keep snow leopard up to date (which might mean sacrificing about 500MB of your download limit, if you have one, each month) you should be pretty safe from viruses. best of all of you dont constantly have things popping up all over the screen whenever you try to download something or go to a so-called "unsafe" website. of course there are a number of downsides to having a mac. you can forget about being able to play most computer games and the amount of software available for it is quite limited compared to windows (but there are ways of getting around it) but those things dont bother me. it's really a matter of whats important to you rather than a clear superiority of either OS.

^^ ur a pearl jam fan right? i think you would prefer interpol then. vampire weekends music is a lot of fun but doesnt have the same substance that interpols does.

thats the problem i have with man citys approach. they spend millions on a player one season then forget about him the season after. how are you going to create any sort of coherence, passion or loyalty when you're treating your players like that. i respect any player who gives man utd headaches and bellamy gave us plenty. man city will regret alienating such a talent.

well i've watched a lot of live footage of the band from their young modern tour and he just looked like he was going through the motions and trying to be a pompous rock star. completely different to what he was like through the 90s. off stage he went through permanently-drunk-cos-my-wife-left-me phase. and it was this showing at the APRA's that really got on my nerves. http://www.adelaidenow.com.au/entertainment/confidential/daniel-johns-fascinatingly-shambolic-at-apra-awards/story-e6fredq3-1111116662618 nevertheless i do love all 5 silverchair albums. although young modern i listened to death so i try to stay from that nowadays. im curious to hear where they take their music next. im not sure about the rest of you. but personally ive never really felt attached to any aussie bands the same i feel about radiohead, pearl jam, coldplay, the white stripes and arcade fire. the closest for me would be The Panics but i simply enjoy their music, there isnt anything emotional there. i really felt something with wolfmother when they first broke through but we all know what happened there. do any of you have an aussie band you really really connect with? at this point i most certainly dont.
