most sense you've made so far. yeah i do see what you mean and i do agree to some extent. i've always been of the opinion that U2 is the last of the "megabands" and that none of these current acts (coldplay, muse and the like) will ever reach those levels of success and universal popularity. but ive always been under the impression that for as long as "rock bands" have been around they have struggled to breakthrough and the lucky few that do are often ripped off by their labels and managers. it happened in the past and will continue in the future. in regards to what you said of what might happen with these young bands in 10-15yrs time i agree that they will struggle to pull in the money but thats only if their music loses its quality. so if anything this change will force bands to work harder and maintain the quality of their music over a long period of time. no longer will you see bands riding on the coattails of one album or a couple of big hits for their entire careers, instead bands will need to work harder, tour harder and be more committed to their art if they intend on being successful in the long term.

yeah you are right venues are downsized and heavy discounts on tickets are also given. but they are so rare that its almost irrelevant. for every downsize that happens there are at least 5 upsizes. heck the show im going to tonight, Slash upsized from a 2500 capacity venue to 5500 and is sold out. and in regard to heavy discounts the only shows that are discounted are the shows by the old farts who are in their 60s and charge $350 (180 pounds) per ticket then realise nobody wants to pay that much to see someone who is 20yrs past their prime so they discount their tickets down to maybe $250. of course i am giving a sydney perspective so i cant speak for the UK or anywhere else, our economy stayed relatively strong through the GFC so people still spending heavily.

whats wrong with people loving individual bands rather than being committed to genres. i will admit i am one of those people who dont commit to a single genre of music, i would say that a person who can enjoy hard rock just as much as they enjoy indie folk as someone who truly appreciates music for what it is rather than the genre or sound it depicts or how loud or soft it is. i didnt say nothing has changed. i said 2 things had changed and the positive impact of one had canceled out the negative impact of the other. and musicians will always make shit loads of money because the generate that sort of money so they deserve it, it's called capitalism. you dont need to convince anyone that cd sales are plummeting and will continue to do so over the next few years to the point where they will become a novelty. but that does not mean that the industry as a whole is in trouble, only record labels are and screw them anyways. the live music scene is thriving and going through the roof in some parts of the world.

theyre such a fucking awesome band. musically speaking they are easily one of the most talanted in the world. i was focusing on the bass line of fake tales and it is nothing short of brilliant. the way the guitars work together is just as awesome and matt helders is in a league of his own. it's a shame this generation of music doesnt appreciate pure musical talent as much as preview era's. there seems to be a greater emphasis on melody, vocals and lyrics rather than genius drum, bass and lead work. oh and "having a great beat to it". honestly the next time i hear someone say they love a song cos "it has a great beat to it" im going to deck them.

^^ HAHA I WAS JUST ABOUT TO POST THE SAME THING!! get on my bootleg thread (link in sig) i have two full concerts recorded by triple j in there. that recording of fake tales is there. i love it how they absolutely nailed the bass line in the sound mix, it sounded perfect. had me headbanging for 3mins straight haha.

imo. pretty meh. Universes was a stunning aussie rock n roll album. this album is bland, one dimensional and completely lacking in creativity.

^^ thats funny when i first started getting into music around 2003ish people told me that the music industry was fucked. here we are 7yrs later and only two things have changed. first nobody buys cd's unless they're on sale (in my case at least) or they dont buy them at all. so going platinum is a big achievement and is an accurate measurement of popularity. second, it is near impossible to get tickets to good gigs and festivals, and you have bands who with the talent they possess wouldnt have sold out a club show 10yrs ago now playing small arenas on the other side of the world to massive audiences. so its really been a case of tit for tat. the astronomical album sales we saw at the turn of the century have been replaced with insane ticket sales. i fail to see how thats bad for the industry or how theres anything wrong with music at the moment so i would love to be enlightened.

im saying 3-1 to arsenal tonight.

man i wanna see art vs science again. saw them once just after their breakthrough performance at splendour 08 and they were pretty damn awesome. me wants an LP!

theyre playing the first 5 songs from the Klaxons album tonight on the radio. just heard the first one, cant remember what it was called but it sounded pretty good. look forward to hearing the rest as the night goes on.

^^ ummm yeah he is on the album. kanye is sampling Woods off the Blood Bank EP and i think bon iver agreed to re-record a bit of it with kanye. EDIT: just heard theyve worked on 10 songs together. people hate him because he has such a poor attitude towards everyone but himself. the incidents during Katrina, the euro mtv awards, bonnaroo 08 and mtv awards last year ever angered people like me who really really love his music. so he deserves the criticism and hate and he receives but he also deserves the accolades he receives for his brilliant music and production abilities. this will be kanye's 5th album in 6yrs right? not a rate of output for an artist who tours very heavily as well collaborates and produces countless other artists. if he got together with jack white they could write 10 albums a year.

usually when a band says "ok we're going to play some songs we've been writing on the road" i let out a groan of annoyance because they almost always sound underdone and shit. but with mumford from memory they played 3 new songs (ie songs that werent on the debut) and each of them sounded just incredible. i wasnt a big fan of their album because their sound wasnt quite down my alley but going by the sound of these new songs i think i might enjoy their second effort.

Man City seem to come across as a team who seem to be satisfied with taking 1 point from away matches. i cant imagine chelsea, man utd or arsenal ie the genuine title contenders taking that sort of mentality into a game. so until man city change their attitude they wont be lifting any silverware.

oh forgot to mention i saw these guys last week. was absolutely blown away. could not believe with only one album under their belts they were on stage for close to 90mins. really really impressive live band and i loved the new tracks. cant wait for a new album to drop.

it's a shame theres so little video footage of the band from their early days particularly of their vitalogy and No code tours when they were in my opinion at their glorious peak. but that pinkpop gig is a favourite of mine.

yeah you're right there are too many. like bjaiken said you really need listen to their albums to really appreciate their music especially their first 4 albums and last 2 albums. i never quite enjoyed their middle 3 as much.

well how about their big 5 Alive, Even Flow , Daughter , Better Man and Last Kiss. if you like those we can take it from there :)
