Say what???

Chris has done tons of collaborative work, and Guy is starting to produce and has his other group. With Chris's output and skills, I wouldn't be surprised if he did work with other people but I don't think his involvement would detract from Coldplay's product. Clearly the band is number one in their mind. I don't think they'll rest until they believe they've made their mark all time. Right now I still don't think they believe that. I give them at least two more albums if not more.

I think it'd be important to list the songs that are going to be in the show in a "no matter what" way. Meaning, even if they aren't complimentary (although they might be), they still have to be in there. For me that's Yellow, The Scientist, Clocks, Fix You, and Viva la Vida. I feel like every other song is, in their minds, a choice. They really have to play those songs or fans might pissed. In considering the narrative of the album, but not yet knowing what all the songs will be like, I think a songs like... Parachutes, Warning Sign, The Hardest Part, Lost, Lovers in Japan, Violet Hill, Strawberry Swing...should be on there. I think LITii won't make it, which is a personal tragedy to me. As is the fact I think DAAHF won't make it. I don't mind what setlist they come up with though, because we do have so many of the song versions live, and they have such a deep list to choose from it would be hard to leave a concert disappointed.

The only reason I want Car Kids is because it's the name of a COLDPLAY SONG. Meaning its a song by Coldplay. It could be called Tar Figs, and I'd want it. Because I'm a greedy Coldplay fan. Considering its prominent usage, it must show up at least lyrically in another song. Is that a lyric in Charlie Brown? I guess I heard something else but I think I know when that would be. Personally, I would love an EP called Car Kids. Even if it was just it and two live tracks or something else. ABSOLUTELY NO WAY WILL THERE BE HIDDEN TRACKS. While that is an overstatement, anyone with sense would realize 14 tracks is the limit. It'd be too long otherwise. That said, I have to imagine they've finished at least three or four songs that didn't make the album cut for one reason or another. Great Expectations is one of those songs we know is finished, because they uploaded it to that music writers website. I bet we see an EP or b-sides with the next singles. Car Kids with the Charlie Brown single might make sense. Great Expectations with Princess of China (you must all be resigned to the fact that the song with Rihanna is going to be a single, right?).

Yeah I'm surprised people are looking for more - 14 tracks is quite a lot, even if some are less than a minute. Musically it creates an interesting environment. I wish they would have some b-sides on the release of singles or a three track EP with a single they didn't put on the album (like LITii) or something like that. Personally, I think it's disappointing when a band like Coldplay only comes with the album, and no extra tracks, but thats me as a fan - it might be a bit unreasonable of me. Based on what the band has said, they're all exhausted and can't imagine making new music. I'm sure there are tracks besides MTM that didn't make the cut, even if they were finished, so here's to hoping they see the light of day!

Don't mind anyone being disappointed they've heard so many of the songs from the festivals, but anyone who thought those wouldn't be on the album had been kidding themselves. It's why I've only listened to them a few times

I'm certain too many people on this thread had never dedicated anywhere near as much time waiting for this album than they had any other. I'm sure many people really don't like the music, but I think until people have listened to the album, put it away for a week or two, and come back, we won't know how we all feel.

This is an exciting run through. I'm glad Chris offered this. For a minute today I was thinking the album might be frontloaded, but I think with princess of China and dlibyh, maybe the second half will be as worthy. Personally I think the band kicked the ass of viva's track order, so I'm hopeful they can top it. It's incredible how much that can dictate experience.

As I've yet to hear up in flames, I just hope your opinion won't represent mine.

I think the studio version sort of crapped all over what people thought of it. I did like the live version better, but I do like the studio as well. I'm sort of hoping they added some stuff (ala Lovers in Japan Osaka Sun Remix) to it so that it sounds better. Like Johnny coming in at multiple times like he does live. I wouldn't call it a particularly Coldplay-esque song though. Maybe the most like one, but its straight out of U2's playbook (I don't happen to think that's a bad thing). Either way, I think it'll come into its own and be truly appreciated once we have the album. Its sort of the crux right in the middle there, so I think that will propel it a bit. Only time can tell. What people say immediately doesn't always mirror how a song is remembered long term.

Liberation didn't mean Chris was going to magic away nerves. Obviously they don't want the world to think its shit. The difference is they're embracing themselves. I think having rihanna on a track speaks to that, not going mainstream, and I hate the idea of her presence right now. Too many people are upset and what to assume they know the real coldplay. What we see is what we get.

I see no real benefit to Coldplay being on Glee except giving fans of the band and show something. The benefit wouldn't be that great financially. Let me say that I would HATE if the band appeared on Glee

In reality, no band is bound to please their fanbase. If they want to continue to be successful, you'd think it would be a good idea, but the idea that they owe us something is false. They've given their current fans a bunch of albums they love. They don't owe anyone anymore than that. People can be disappointed in the change in direction, but beyond that we shouldn't act like they owe us something. Coldplay would be big even without Coldplaying... And, the reality behind most of the intense criticism of Coldplay's new direction is from fans who think the band have changed spheres. This obviously flys in the face of what nearly every person on the earth thinks when they hear a Coldplay song. Read any reviews? Most people are like, well this is Coldplay - maybe slightly different - but still clearly Coldplay. Honestly, bands like U2 and Radiohead have sustained the greatest shifts in style and still been beloved. Can you imagine if either of them just made records like their first two or three? Where would the world of music be without their new directions? Honestly, if a band I like takes a new direction, I generally see that as an opportunity for myself to grow as an appreciator of music. Coldplay have not shifted anywhere near enough to actually cause me to feel I've grown. If anything they've made nice incremental shifts which have made my listening experience feel fresh each time. That's what I want with this new album - fresh. Some people want more of the same, and thats fine because people know what they like. Let's just not all get high and mighty about Coldplay owing us something.

I'm glad to hear people like this song. I won't be listening it until the album comes out though because I just can't have anymore of the album spoiled for me. I want that first time experience!

Fess Up, Who thought the wheel that breaks the butterfly...? Was a really dumb/no context lyric that just allowed butterfly to enter the song, only to later find out that its an expression? If you're English, maybe you knew all along. And if you're a massive Oasis fan, maybe you knew as well. I'm American, was once an Oasis fan, and am college educated, and it went completely over my head! So did anyone else feel stupid to find out? Or was it only me?

I can say I definitely won't be listening. I can't hear any new songs from the album, otherwise the experience will be completely ruined!

:clap: As you said, all these people who think Coldplay weren't always mainstream are just people who don't have a clear understanding of the vast music landscape. There is absolutely nothing wrong with not liking the new Coldplay, but so many of the criticisms are littered with talk of selling out, going mainstream, listening to Eno...blah blah blah. None of that is even remotely accurate. The band has always been mainstream. I think a lot of people are suffering separation anxiety or something...wishing Chris was here to sing them 10 lullabies. Fact is that we still get those types of songs, there are just new types in there. Once again, nothing wrong with not liking the new music. But people who think Coldplay have sold out need to realize they were ALWAYS a commercial band. Yellow is up there as the most pop songs of the last decade. And it's honestly not very heartfelt...everything was all yellow? The band have said they don't even know what that means. It was just a lyric. Just like a lot of new songs have lyrics similarly pointless.

I only meant to be saying that on an album there can be a variety of tracks with a variety of purposes. I don't disagree that Paradise and ETIAW don't resonate emotionally. They're ear candy in a lot of respects. You don't have to work too hard to enjoy them (that's the case with many Coldplay songs though), you just get a feeling from them. Which may very well be less than genuine. I would be extremely disenchanted with the band if we only were going to get songs like Paradise and ETIAW (mentioned this in another thread as well), but because we've heard MTM, CB, and UATW, I feel like there will be balance to pure ear candy and more pure emotions. Which I'm fine with. Although I can completely understand why other people wouldn't be. So no ruffled feathers! I was glad to see you thought Charlie Brown was emotional, because I feel like there are a decent amount of Coldplay fans who only recognize emotion when its directed in a lovey-dovey way (many of those fans hated every song from Viva era, even though there were plenty of emotional ones). So sorry about anything I said! Nothing wrong with two people wanting different things :)

My honest opinion when I first heard the song was...WTF. I wasn't angry so much as deeply disappointed. Even though I ALWAYS will believe they are making the music they wanted to make, I felt like that they want to make music that is like the rest of the crap on the radio. It sounded like it could be a Hip-Hop/Pop song. Honestly, sounded like a song Ms. Rihanna would be singing. I was extremely disenchanted and I went to bed as such. Then I played the song this morning and I realized I had overreacted the previous night, most likely because I would say this song exists so far out of the realm of material they've done before. I can't imagine what the people who hate the whole post X&Y phase are thinking, because they must want to kill themselves. For me, I loved Viva's evolution. I thought ETIAW was also a positive step forward. It doesn't rank up with their classics for me (which includes Viva songs), but it was a good upbeat song. At first, as I've said, Paradise seemed like something out of left field. All along I'd considered Coldplay's evolution akin to going up a ladder. Each was clearly a step connected to the previous one. Paradise seemed like they jumped eight steps forward. Something completely different. I still think it's incredibly different, it's just I've come to be able to appreciate it for what it is. I feel like the production is extremely slick (in a mostly positive way) and I think the beat involved is pretty hypnotic. Honestly, I think the loops Chris and co have been coming with have been exceptional this album. It's not that I necessarily love only loops, but it's clear in HLH and Charlie Brown and ETIAW that Chris has been doing work in that department. I honestly feel like the production values on this song are actually pretty classic-worthy. Some of Chris's lyrics kind of trample on that, but for the most part I feel like his voice is used a suitable accompaniment to the rest of the song. The la-la-la-la-la part sounded like something Rihanna would sing (omg I'm still coming to terms with her). In some semblance of a conclusion, I think Paradise is a perfectly suitable piece of the full album I hope Mylo Xyloto will be. In the same way that a song like Lost! or Lovers in Japan would crush me if every other song on an album sounded the same, I would not be happy if Paradise represented MX. I don't want to hear an album of Paradise-like songs, but with the output we've already heard, I really don't think we will. In which case, I know I will enjoy everytime HLH transitions to Paradise, because in the spectrum of an album it will be something different. For me, I want a full album listening experience. That isn't always easy when all the songs sort of bleed together, which I feel happened with Parachutes (which ranks third for me for Coldplay albums) and X&Y. There's a boredom to listening to an album like that. I think MX is shaping up to an album that touches all my musical senses. If Coldplay can accomplish that, I really do think it could be a masterpiece.

Maybe some of you aren't Americans, aren't old enough or just have a lack of understanding, but to celebrate the anniversary of a song that was shaped because an awful act is just idiotic and insensitive. A solemn remembrance is one thing. Goofy grins are embarrassing.

Someone thought violet hill was about johnnys daughter?? Haha
