What are the REAL reasons why Americans have been losing their jobs?
You don't think there would ever be wars if there was no government? People would group into clumps of like-minded people, and thanks to good old human nature would end up going to war over factor x, y, or z. No government does not equal no wars. It just means no wars between different governments. In fact you could argue that governments do keep down the wars, or at least internal ones. Do you think Darfur would be as bad as it is if there was a functioning government in place? Do you think a working nonbiased police/military force wouldn't help keep the holy war down in the Middle East? I meant in general, they would be able to buy other things; I didn't mean specifically a TV or computer. Basically, everyone would be able to buy more stuff if they had more money, but it goes back to the original point of this thread; thanks to all that extra money the value of money would go down. In that space of time you would be able to buy a bunch of new TVs or computers or the equivalent, but the value of the money you bought them with would go away, until a person with an average amount of money lived like an average person, and it would go back to the lower/middle/higher class system that we have. That's kind of what happens with inflation now, actually. Basically the middle class stays as the middle class no matter what; individuals may move up and down but the middle class will stay in the same percentage of the population and will always stay in the middle; same with the higher and lower class. Really, what difference would it make? I know anarchy isn't chaos. I look things up in the dictionary. Anarchy has connotations of chaos, because anarchy is no government and no "higher powers," which at least has the potential to turn into chaos. Again, no one's really tried. Also, you're really making it sound like public schools are nothing but propaganda machines or something. "That's propaganda taught in government schools"?? Sorry, but in my entire time of being educated in public schools no one has ever told me, "Sara, anarchy (the government/lack thereof form) means chaos." As a matter of fact, any time we've looked at anarchy as a social construct it's been pretty nonbiased. Maybe I just have really, really good teachers, but I would not call it a peice of "propaganda taught in government schools." I don't know how old you are, or when you went to school, or what school you went to or even if you're still in school, but that's not my personal experience. I'm not saying government is good for that reason. That's just what would happen. The alpha males or alpha females or alpha what-have-yous would gain control -- you see it in nature and you see it in humans. That's how humans act; maybe we don't act like wolves all the time but we're not so far removed from them that we don't act the way we do. EDIT: BTW, I think this thread's title should be changed to "The Official Random Socioeconomic/Political discussion Thread." Cuz it isn't really about Americans losing jobs anymore.

Actually I think that's true. Nathan was... a character. Sort of annoying, but he usually knew what the fuck he was talking about, so.

What are the REAL reasons why Americans have been losing their jobs?
Are you sure about that? It only took a handful of overly religious psychopaths just to bring down the World Trade Center. And that started quite a reign of fear in Americans' psyches, too; exactly what they were trying to do. Yeah, I do think if you could get crack from a vending machine, there would be more crackheads, you just wouldn't notice them, because they wouldn't be hobos on the street or starting gang wars. Drugs are easy to get for most people, but if you could get them out of a vending machine, a lot of very recreational people would start using them more. Probably me, for instance. haha! You just contradicted yourself, by using everyone and relatively in the same sentance. They would be relatively wealthier compared to today, but they wouldn't move up the heirarchy of richness. Everyone who paid taxes would get richer by more or less the same amount which = no change relative to everyone else. Probably not what you meant, actually, but all that would happen if there were suddenly no taxes would be everyone would just be able to buy a new TV or computer or something. Or steal it, because they wouldn't be punished. People who are more or less decent folks are partially decent folks because they are afraid of the law. If you go out and steal something and get caught, you get put in jail, and that deterrs you from stealing something. People who have morals (as in, "Oh, I better not steal that TV, because I will be a bad person or burn in hell" or what have you) have them because of social structure (opposite of anarchy.) Besides, if there was no government, there would be leaders that emerged eventually, and they would start to govern. The small percentage of psychopaths/messed up people would gain power and start charging people for protection, which is part of what taxes are or started as anyway. That's human nature for you. EDIT: Nevermind, I just realized something. The person who stole the TV probably would be punished by the person who owned the TV. But that isn't a very nice thing to do, now is it?

What are the REAL reasons why Americans have been losing their jobs?
I'm aware that you aren't here to hurt my feelings/annoy me/prove me wrong. I'm sure if you really wanted to you probably would, it's pretty easy to annoy me. You seem like a fairly smart person and probably you have better things to do than disprove random teenagers on a forum. See, the reason why I'm more likely to trust a government is the one I stated -- they're there to serve the majority. Yes, they have more power, but if a corporation was in charge to the point where the government was (let's just take your Comcast example) they would probably evolve to the point where they would kidnap you and put you in jail. So, there you go... you have to have a balance. If the world was made up of completely (or at least fairly) reasonable people we could all live without government; but there are psychopaths and generally messed up people, and almost no one is completely reasonable -- and I'm aware I sound like a terrified sheeple-person, but it's really true that we (most people) do need to protect ourselves from those people. Whether or not we need a specific government of leaders is up for grabs; so far no one has risked starting an anarchist state (unless you count Christiania in Copenhagan) ("that hippy town," as it's known) (and that only really works because it's a very small group and they're stoned all the time, haha). I'm sure the world would be a great place if it was all one big Christianania, however this is almost completely unfeasible because the only people who live there are people who aren't the psychopaths/"bad people" -- most of them are just hippies. And they do rely on Copenhagen for most of their stuff and police protection. (they do get gang shootings over drugs every now and then.) So I guess it's a question of realistic feasibility, and whether or not you want to take the risk of establishing a state like that. Without governments there would literally be anarchy by definition, and depending on the set of ungoverned people, it might not be pretty.

What is your favourite Coldplay song today?
yeah, and a lot of them are really underrated. Most of my favorite Coldplay songs are b-sides -- it could be because they sound the least overproduced/poppish. I don't know.

Jonas Brothers cover "Fix You" at Hammersmith Apollo!

It only breaks occasionally, and because I'm really bad at flossing. And in honesty I've only swallowed it once. :P I am guilty once more of exagerating extravegantly.

What are the REAL reasons why Americans have been losing their jobs?
No, I didn't say that. I just said that you have to pay property taxes everywhere; and it's "protection money" because some tax money goes to that country's military. That isn't what I meant. Okay. Your point about there being no incentive to subsidized companies to innovate is true. There you go. What you're saying is that despite the short-term chaos/depression that would happen if the government didn't support the companies it's supporting currently, we would be better off without it? Not everyone wants or would tolerate a depression. People want things to stay the way they are. Since the government serves the people's interests, that's what it's going to do. What's more, it would wreck the entire world's economy even more than it currently is wrecked. (I am not saying that's what the government should necessarily be doing, by the way...) There's actually a slight difference between corporations having a monopoly on something and the state having a monopoly on that something. Since the state is elected by people it will always try to serve the majority's interest. Corporations will exist whether or not the people like them; if a corporation has a monopoly it doesn't need to worry about public opinion anymore, because there's no one to compete with. In a democratic society, there is always someone for a politician to compete with (other politicians). If the state had a monopoly on health care everyone would get the same amount and there would be government-paid researchers/healthcare professionals, because otherwise whoever was in charge of healthcare would probably be kicked out of office by the people. If one corporation had a monopoly on healthcare it would not have the same pressures the state has to create new drugs and research new things. Currently, if a corporation invented a pill that cured cancer, it could sell it for whatever price it wanted; but I think if the state invented a pill that cured cancer it would be availible to more people, because otherwise the leaders would get kicked out of office. So there actually is a difference between a democratic society of people having a monopoly and one nondemocratic group of people having a monopoly on something. That said, I didn't encourage the state having a monopoly on anything. But, if I had to pick between the state having a monopoly on something and a corporation having a monopoly on something I would pick the state having the monopoly. But that really isn't what I said. All right, that was balderdash. I don't even know what I was thinking when I wrote that. You win. Actually I've realized I'm not really as knowledgeable on this subject as you guys are. Tip of the hat to you for actually knowing what the hell you're talking about; and you obviously know more than me. It's been very informitive, thank you.

The "things I wish I could say" thread
kay, gonna use this thread. Strangers, get ready to read my innermost thoughts and feelings: You guys need to leave me the fuck alone. I'm not a lesbian, I'm not asexual, I just don't happen to feel anything for any of our so-called male "peers" -- they're all immature morons and none of them know how to act remotely like grown-ups, and if you think I could ever stand to date someone like that, you haven't been paying attention. LET IT DROP. I'M NOT GOING TO DATE ANYONE RIGHT NOW. Don't know who in particular I wanted to say that at. But now I feel better. This is oddly cathartic, actually. :D

Toothbrush
There are seperate tongue cleaners on toothbrushes? O_o I just scrub the surface of my tounge each morning because it gets rid of the morning-breath-rotten-mouth-feeling. Except if I stick it too far on the back of my tongue it sort of makes me gag, which isn't nice. Wow, I never knew dental hygene could be so interesting!! :D

OH MY GOD, I KNOW, RIGHT? Every time I try to floss it seems like it breaks and gets stuck in my teeth. And sometimes it gets stuck and I can't get it out and then later I'll be eating breakfast or something and I'll accidentally swallow it. You can all start feeling sorry for me now. Go ahead.
