  1. ASFOS is such a cookie-cutter, formulaic, appeal-to-the-masses track though. We gotta draw the line somewhere. Collaboration doesn't mean selling out. By your logic, working with Brian Eno was selling out. Working with Markus Dravs was selling out. It isnt true. Midnight and the escapist are simply different cases than ASFOS
  2. OK rihanna not as much. But c'mon, ASFOS is largely Avicii's track. Chris wrote it yes, but Avicii made it. There's a reason Chris had to beg the others to put the song on the LP. The phrase "selling out" is used a lot by people who are outraged by CP pandering to the mainstream. That's not what I'm saying. After all, CP are MAINSTREAM AS F**K In the case of ASFOS, they literally sold out. At least Chris did.
  3. This is random but Always In My Head is one of the best songs Chris has ever written; maybe even the best. And the production is just as beautiful as the vocal performance. I don't really hold Coldplay up to a high artistic standard, but damn sometimes there's a stroke of genius and they just evoke the strongest emotions out of me. And that is worthy of acclaim.
  4. I want them to go all-in electronic. Let me be clear though---- i DO NOT mean EDM like ASFOS or DLIBYH. That's not Coldplay. Those songs make me cringe. More specifically I want electronic instrumentation. I like what they did production-wise on Ghost Stories, and I really hope Midnight wasn't just a one-off venture into more ethereal and atmospheric electronic music. I think they could really make a strong and coherent album using Midnight as a blueprint for transitional interludes, song intros/outros, etc... I don't want to make a Radiohead reference cos their so often referenced, but look at The King of Limbs or Kid A as examples for what I'm looking for. Yes, those 'classic' Coldplay anthems will be there, but I hope they don't sell out and hire the services of a Avicii or a Rihanna again. [WHICH PROBABLY WILL HAPPEN!!!:veryangry2:]
  5. Ok we want to do ratings now I'm bored too... Viva -- 9.5 Rush -- 9 GS -- 8 Para -- 7 MX -- 6.5 X&Y -- 4.5
  6. I still want to see a self titled lp. Just "Coldplay."
  7. Thats kinda what they just did w gs
  8. 1:viva: 2 :arobtth: 3 :gs: 4 :parachutes: 5 :mx: 6 :x&y: anyone who disagrees is wrong and don't kno enything about music or cldplay
  9. The next single will be Another's Arms
  10. No. I think if they tried another X&Y style album it would be great.
  11. Ghost Story doesn't fit the album either, if you think about... Actual drums, and a much louder rock feel to it. I like it but I just had to remove it from the tracklist after including it for about a week. O pt 2 and All your Friends still flow with the rest of the album so I kept those in. This guy is so pretentious and over dramatic, just for the sake of being over dramatic. His reviews are terrible. Watch his Arcade Fire -- Reflektor review; he completely misinterprets the meanings of the songs and just bags on the album without any real reason. He's just overly negative just to create the illusion that he's highly opinionated and knows what he's talking about. Anthony Fantano (aka theneedledrop) on the other hand, is a phenomenal reviewer and I've discovered a lot of GREAT new music through him. And I basically agree with him on GS. The only difference is I'm completely fine with all the problems he mentions. As a hardcore fine, I'll welcome true music from the heart with open arms when it's from Coldplay.
  12. I stopped reading after this.
  13. And now addressing Radiohead: I agree with Mrk; Coldplay and Radiohead are two completely different bands. Radiohead's music is much more complex, much more difficult to digest, and more interesting in my opinion. I can stand back and look at them objectively and say Radiohead makes much more thought-provoking and interesting music. But music isn't something to be looked at objectively; it's extremely feelings-based. Coldplay is my all time favorite because that's just my gut feeling, and it's been this way since like 2002. Which band is technically "better"? Probably Radiohead, but I don't care, and nobody else should care either. Listen to what you love and let others listen to what they love.
  14. I understand where you're coming from on a lot of of these points. I personally like the drums on GS, I don't mind that they're electronic. And the fact that the entire album uses electronic drums makes it more cohesive, which is a factor that I really hold up high when judging an album. And yes, True Love is very Disney-esque, but it builds to a satisfying crescendo at the end, in my opinion. And yes, it is very Chris-centric, but I don't mind that either because it's coming from a very genuine place. Personally, I love GS. It's probably 3rd place behind Viva and AROBTTH for me! :) I appreciate where you're coming from though.
  15. Just curious, rafi. Why do you dislike GS so much? Just a brief synopsis is fine.
  16. Always In My Head and Magic
  17. aschall replied to Sparky's topic in Ink
This song just doesn't do it for me. Chris is most successful lyrically when he talks straight from the heart-- and I mean that literally. "Straight" from the heart. Whenever he fogs up his message with basic and cheesy metaphors, it doesn't do the song any justice. Chris should be more aware of the fact that he's not a master poet, and just be honest. That's why songs like Always In My Head or True Love are more emotionally engaging than a song like Ink; in those songs, Chris is just speaking from the heart. The production of the song is pretty average as well. I'm not saying it's a bad song. It's just not as strong as the others.
  18. aschall replied to Sparky's topic in Magic
The first time I heard Magic I was a bit underwhelmed. The second time a listened, I realized how much I hated the lyrics. I was quite disappointed, especially after seeing how fresh and risky and exciting the new direction they seemed to be taking LP6 with Midnight. But the more I listened, the more I grew to love the simplicity of the track. Guy's bass coupled with Will's drum beat is simply one of the most powerful pieces of music Coldplay have ever made, mostly in its circular an hypnotic nature. You can't resist yourself from nodding your head up and down or tapping your foot. It's not a loud, bombastic throb that makes you want to jump up in down, but its effect is just as powerful, if not more so. With Magic, Coldplay really continue the theme of understatement. I could listen to that bass line on loop for hours...
  19. This is the first time where I feel like the simplistic nature of Chris's lyrics has done a Coldplay song some good. Always In My Head is a truly heartbreaking song, and one of Chris's strongest vocal performances yet. The way he croons as he delivers the line "And so my mouth waters to be fed," evoked such a strong emotional reaction from me the first time I listened to the song. And apart from Chris, everyone else's touch on this song just makes it even better. Jonny's guitar is beautiful (as always) and it's really what I associate to most when I see the title. In other words, it is definitely the highlight of the song, and without it, Always In My Head would basically just be an RnB track. Will is sleek, swift, and modern on the drums and slyly gives the song a bit of pace, even though it feels slow in nature. The rapid, trap-esque ticks give this song a modern and nuanced feel. And finally, Guy's bass just really bolsters the emotional weight of the track. This, coupled with Chris's vocal just makes me want to cry every time! Always In My Head is hands-down my favorite track off Ghost Stories. Everything from the lyrics to the production is a stroke of genius, and this track serves as the best example of how throughout the years, Coldplay have managed to evolve their sound while still maintaining that heart and emotion of their debut album.
  20. GS tour has to happen!! Listen to this crowd!
  21. Anybody watching in the US??? No links are working!
  22. Even though this review is unnecessarily harsh, there are a few things I agree with. - X&Y as their worst album - Ink as the worst track off GS - Their best days are behind them I truly believe Viva was their peak. They might surprise me with LP7, but I think they're past their recording prime. Don't get me wrong though, Ghost Stories is one of my favorites already.
  23. Ghost Stories is the most honest album they've ever released. I've always thought Chris's lyrics were bad and this album doesn't change my opinion on that. But, like Chris said, this album is just the truth, so take it or leave it. There's something in each track that I can appreciate. Even if it's not the best track, there's a highlight about it that makes it worth-while. Take Magic for example: pretty damn basic lyrics, pretty sparse production, there's not much there to be honest. But Guy's bass line and Will's drum beat in tandem is just perfect. I can't help but bob my head back and forth. Every song is excellent, or at the very least has a saving grace. No song is skip-worthy. This is all I want from Coldplay for the rest of their careers. Just genuine music.
