  1. The backing vocals are pretty cool, I just hope they remain subtle. I don't want them to drown out the real vocals, because they do sound pretty fake.
  2. From my point of view, I honestly don't want to be talking about how awful Coldplay has become... especially since I joined this site to express my excitement about the new album. BUT I'm not saying the dislike is unjustified. I understand that Coldplay has changed and that the lyrical content of the new songs is not up to standards. If we could reasonably express our opinions instead of treating this as if it were the end of the world I think we'd all get along a lot better. People who will like Coldplay no matter what need to realize that Coldplay is not godly. People who absolutely hate the new stuff need to realize they're on a Coldplay fan website, and they're going to be arguing with people who think Coldplay's godly... because you're on a FAN website. Fans usually think their band is godly. If I'm correct, I think 'fan' is short for 'fanatic', which is a synonym for 'zealot', 'devotee', 'radical', 'dogmatist', and 'diehard'. I see how Mylo Xyloto is not as good as the rest of the albums. Paradise and ETIAW are fluffy and frivolous, but here's what I think I understand: Coldplay is telling a narrative through the album. All of the songs are adding up together to tell a story. The lyrics for one song, then, are dependent on the narrative and don't stand alone very well independently (unless you're into it). I'm a little flustered by the fact none of the songs stand alone very well, but I'm excited to hear the album as a whole. I honestly think this album won't be as awful as all of the fans are making it out to be, but comparatively I can see how it might be their worst. Truthfully though, I'd personally rather hear Coldplay's worst than Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber, Nicki Minaj, and all of the rappers out there any day. So enjoy the fluffiness and frivolousness for god's sake. They have yet to go through a slump, and if this is it, then start getting excited to LP6! ;) (PS, I don't mean to offend anyone! I'm just stating what I perceive and observe)
  3. Well... here's what I think: Their previous music had more than just instruments. Clocks was more than a song with piano, guitar, drums, and bass. It had an atmosphere -- this sort of gas floating around it that made me see life differently. All of their songs before Viva were emotionally applicable to anybody's life, whether you were going through your mid-life crisis or going through tough times in school. I still get this feeling when I listen to Clocks, The Scientist, Trouble, Shiver, Everything's Not Lost, See You Soon, Amsterdam, Politik, and Fix You. The songs have this weird mix of dread and hope. This comforting and understanding feeling I get from a parent. Viva was a great album because it was creative and it was new but now, everything just seems like ear candy. Don't get me wrong, I love Viva and I'll undoubtedly love this new album but it's never going to be the same Coldplay. I'm never going to listen to Lost! or Cemeteries of London and feel what I felt with the rest of the music. What I wish: I wish Coldplay took this new creative route and tried to reach some of their roots. I wish Chris Martin looked for music in the soul and not the brain. I wish they constrained themselves to four instruments again. I KNOW they're very talented, I KNOW they want to be creative... but with MX they're approaching it the wrong way. It seems they forgot where they came from and how they got where they are now. Now I'm still excited for MX. Princess of China is amazing and I'm excited to hear Rihanna. Hurts Like Heaven is gloriously upbeat. Charlie Brown is atmospheric. Paradise is pure, sweet, and savory ear candy. Us Against The World is well-structured and image-evoking. I love the songs that have come from it, but they're not the same. They're not the Coldplay I grew up with, which is GREAT! They're changing! Yay! But they don't write music like they used to... It's not the sound I'm concerned about, it's the emotional connection. Sorry if I'm too sappy and sorry if I wrote too much. I don't want to change the mood of the thread. I just agree that they need to change. That doesn't mean change their sound, it means change their song-writing. I don't want Chris Martin to be a candy-factory of melodies, I want him to make something worth remembering.
  4. The live version is so much better but -- and I don't know why-- the live version makes me respect the studio version a lot more...
  5. Am I the only one who is excited to hear Princess of China? I was a bit apprehensive at first with Rihanna, but I don't think I should draw conclusions. Let's just wait to hear it. The people that are negatively judging the song prematurely are obviously going to be the ones that hate it, so let's just wait to see if it's good or not. There's a possibility it might be awesome (along with the possibility it might be disastrous), so let's just be excited about the possibility that it might be awesome. :)
  6. Jesus christ. I joined this website to talk about the excitement I had about the new album, not defend my favorite band from the 'fans' that want to preserve the old sound.
  7. I certainly hope not, but if it does end up being better than the live version, I'll be okay with that. There's this part of me that'll be sad though if it's better than the live version :( . I want them to be able to perform it live with the same sentiment.
  8. After listening to Paradise 12 times over, I freaking love it. It wasn't like that with ETIAW for me. I love how it switches from Eminor, Bb, F, C to DM7, Bb, F, C. The piano (although hidden by strings and synthesizers) is glorious. There's more subtlety than I thought. I wish there was more guitar though... May I express how excited I am about how HLH will flow into this then move on to Charlie Brown? This album is going to be great. Sure there's pop-y stuff, but it's going to flow nicely together. Oh, and get ready for PoC. It's going to be even more pop-y than Paradise... and that's fine with me. As long as it's good and I still want to listen to it in five years is all that matters.

The wheel breaks the butterfly?? Huh??
  10. Coldplay=masters of making four chord songs. Actually, Hurts Like Heaven is based on two chords.
  11. My guess is that -- since this is a fansite -- people are going to have stronger opinions about things, hence the black & white standpoints. It's really not god-awful. It's also not the best thing to ever happen. Personally, I don't see much of a downgrade. It's unfortunate they chose it as a single. There are plenty of other songs we've already heard that could've been way better singles. But I've listened to it seven times, and I came to the conclusion that I like it. I'm sorry if my opinion is too centrist. I'd give it a 6 on a good day and a 5 on a bad day. I think a lot of people are trying not to like it.
  12. Oh crap. I definitely didn't mean to say E. I definitely meant to say Gminor... Lol. But you're completely right, Dm7 works too.
  13. E, B♭, F, C (EDIT: JK, totally meant Gminor, B♭, F, C. I'm retarded) ... for the WHOOOOOOOOOOOLE song. I wish I could like the song, but it's going to have to grow on me. To me it lacks creativity, it lacks depth, it lacks emotional connection. It sounds like pop-fluff. The fact they'd choose this as a single above Hurts Like Heaven, Charlie Brown, Major Minus, or Us Against The World is beyond me. I woke up for this... I'm not bashing the album though. This song is definitely not single material to me, but it could fit nicely in with the flow of things in the future. We'll see... we'll see.
  14. It sucks because it's not going to be the same when they play it live. It's not like they're going to be able to bring Rihanna around with them everywhere. It makes the album eternally incomplete when it's not purely the band. As for the recording, the song might still be kick-ass -- but I won't be able to experience in it's full glory live.
  15. Nope. The only thing that I'm sad about is I've been listening to the live version Coldplay performed in Rock Am fully expecting that's how it was going to be... and honestly I liked that one. A lot. Who knows though? I have no qualms with Rihanna. She isn't bad. Something magical could happen. I just am ready to accept it might not be my favorite of the new songs anymore because I haven't heard it in its full glory (with Rihanna). Does that make sense?
  16. Rihanna... Hmm. I don't know whether to be excited or scared fucking shitless.
  17. THANK YOU! You are my hero for posting this!
  18. This has such a city aesthetic to it... I don't know why, but it seems like that to me. The soaring synths transitioning to the intimate, chiming piano with the raw drum beat.
  19. ETIAW Paradise UIF CB PoC
  20. ^It's just so early! Bhlarg!!! It's so inconvenient!! Why can't they release it on the weekend!? Maybe I'll go to bed at 6:30 and set my clock for 12:30...
  21. It'll be 1:50 in the morning here... which is not ideal. I don't know how I'm going to get through the day with it. I'll be so excited I won't be able to concentrate on what my teachers say!
  22. The soaring synths, the accompanying falsetto and then it all quickly dissipates into an intimate piano and drum verse. This is an epic preview. It has a city aesthetic.
