Fair enough - obviously there is no right or wrong answer about what type of music is good. I just thought it was unfair how you seemed to categorize rap lyrics being about "f'ing some ho" and similar. Just curious: What do you think about artists that uses samples and beats, like Flying Lotus or Four Tet for example?

Now I'm not the biggest fan of rap or hip hop per se but this was one of the most ignorant statements I've ever read. I'm a huge Radiohead + Thom Yorke fan .....and even I can admit "Twist" is mediocre.

......you just named two incredibly mediocre albums from two mediocre bands. While I can go in depth about why the albums you listed are distinctly average, I'll just let the press do the talking: An End Has a Start (Metascore of 65) - "These 10 songs repeatedly strike the same dynamic and evoke the same vague drama, each sounding more perfunctory--and more soulless--than the previous." A Weekend in the City (Metascore of 65) - "They play things way too safe... which makes for a rather boring listening experience" ....these are the two albums indicative of Jacknife Lee's greatest work? This is the producer you want for Coldplay's next effort? Really? (Although thank you for providing these examples because now it's starting to become clear what type of music you listen to and the musical styles you prefer)

You keep promoting Jacknife Lee's credentials as a producer but what album is he associated with that's any good? Trust me, I looked and they're all quite average. His best work is probably on REM's Collapse into Now and that's a mediocre album. Meanwhile, Nigel Godrich was producer of Pavement's Terror Twilight and Beck's Sea Change for example. And we all know his work with Radiohead....

Yeah, I think you're right. It seems a lot of people equate older fans as wanting "slow and quieter songs" when that's not the case. I just want quality songs and unfortunately, every new song I hear from the MX-era is disappointing me. Worse, there's only like 4 or 5 songs that haven't been heard yet so not much to really change my mind :cry:

Honestly, the albums under Jacknife Lee's production are quite mediocre. This includes the Snow Patrol album you mentioned. Despite not liking the recent direction of Coldplay, I would much rather keep Brian Eno

:nod: Exactly! My criticism recently hasn't been that Coldplay is more "pop" than before (whatever that means). If they could make a truly great "pop" album, then I would be perfectly fine with it (even though the record wouldn't necessarily be my favorite). It's just that I think their recent songs (highlighted by ETIAW + Paradise) aren't very good...

I'll be honest - the new rendition sound messy in several places, especially Chris Martin's vocals in the beginning. I agree with you, Coldplay will probably never be as experimental as some of their peers ....and I think that's unfortunate.

I haven't been the biggest Coldplay fan recently but even I'm reserving judgment on this song until I hear it. Do I have high expectations for it? No. But they might just surprise me. Actually, it seems to be the same fans who liked Paradise are the ones who enjoy Up in Flames. In fact, a considerable number of posters have said the song is mediocre, kind of boring. And no, I would not like al album full of songs like Up in Flames because it would put me straight to sleep.

This should be the direction they go in and take some risks. To do so, they need to draw upon different musical influences. I don't think Chris Martin would ever be brave enough to take electronic music and incorporate it into the band's music like Radiohead did with Kid A (Plus, it would lead to more Radiohead comparisons)... Adopting orchestral elements into their music might actually be a logical and feasible landing spot for an upcoming album if there is one (and I'm not talking faux-string arrangements like in Paradise). It's a popular response to a song they don't know how to analyze. You could have the world's happiest tune and there will be a person who says it's about suicide.

Yeah, I'm fine with people disagreeing with me. That's what a message board is for - where fans can share all kinds of thoughts with other fans. But these past couple of days have shown that this only applies as long as it's praise for Coldplay. One tiny bit of constructive criticism = > "OMG YOU ARE A HATER!!!" It's very frustrating repeating the same things over and over because people either a) didn't bother reading the post; or b) didn't understand the post but interpreted as "hate" To make things easier, I added a poll. This should reveal if people agree/disagree with the idea that the lyrical quality has decreased since the AROBTTH days. It's science. :cool:
