It's still a bit early but I'm generally surprised at the lack of votes for Parachutes and relatively big support for Viva la Vida. But as expected, AROBTTH has the most votes.

Maybe... but surely it changed him someway. There's no way the current Chris Martin has the same perspective about things as a younger Chris Martin, one who was just trying to break it into the music industry.

You're absolutely right in that regard - lyrics aren't and shouldn't be the be-all and end-all of a song. However, lyrics do matter and frankly, I'm not a fan of lazy songwriting evident in some of Coldplay's recent stuff. It seems other people also share this view that lyrics have taken a turn for the worse... my intention from the beginning

He used to be once upon a time... and then something happened. :( For example, he was so great at singing Politik in the past and now, it just sound pitchy.

Purplemonkeyz232, if you've bothered to read any of my earlier posts, then you would know I've already conceded that Coldplay has a few lyrical clunkers in the past (after all, what band or musician can claim to have great lyrics 100% of the time?) I've even admitted that Yellow + In My Place are indicative of lazy songwriting, while a song like Us Against the World is pretty good. So once again, you're missing the point that the average effort of the earlier days far surpass the recent stuff lyrically - I have a much easier time finding subpar lyrics in their new stuff

Thank you! The whole intention of this thread was to talk about the songwriting and the lyrics. As you might have surmised, the thread was derailed a couple of times by people not really understanding the argument. More often that not, people were putting words in my mouth, claiming that I wanted another Parachutes or A Rush of Blood to the Head.... It's about taking an objective look at the lyrics, comparing the average efforts from the earlier days to their recent songs. Take off the Coldplay-tinted glasses for a bit and just look at the words written down. You'll find it's indicative of lazy songwriting (and the poll reflects what I've been talking about the entire time)

:nod: I like Us Against the World but the rest of the MX-era songs haven't exactly been lyrically inspired....

Everyone knows I haven't been the biggest fan of Paradise but the studio version is far better than the live version. The live version sounds kind of.... flat. It certainly doesn't have that epic sound of the studio version because it would be hard to recreate live without using significant amount of playback. It also isn't helped by Chris Martin's pitchy vocals (is it me or is his live singing not as consistent as before?)

Hmm, there's some strange bands listed under indie pop. For example, I'm not sure if I ever listened to Interpol's Turn on the Bright Lights and thought to myself, "wow, this is great indie pop" :shocked2:

Exactly! This is what I was going for from the first post of what has now become a convoluted thread. There's no question the money + fame changes you (sometimes for the better, sometimes for the worse) and when you are a multimillionaire superstar musician, can you continue to relate to the common person? Their daily struggles?

I usually consider Arcade Fire as "baroque pop." As for indie pop, I consider bands like The Kooks. .....but in the end, none of these labels really matter :P

He's like the Ed O'Brien of the group. You see him on the stage and half the time, you're wondering if he's actually doing anything. Sometimes I even forget that there's a bass player on stage. But it's all ok because fangirls think he's hot :) (I kid about Ed O"Brien btw - I love the atmosphere he adds to Radiohead songs)
