Good idea (on the other guys actually contributing lyrics), but would it work? Will Chris sound as heartfelt singing lyrics that are not his own? Will the songs still have the same magical chemistry built between the band members that makes the "Coldplay sound"?

Not to be adversarial, but why do you equate Newplay with the band selling its soul? I agree some of their output has become more produced and less "heart on your sleeve" emotionally accessible, but there are definitely plenty of sounds that pack good emotional punches! If it's because they've turned pop then I feel it's unfair to want to pigeonhole them into one musical genre as they are much more capable and talented than that, not to mention that I really like that they are a band with diverse musical tastes :D They can and still do alt-rock well! The only minus I can see is less album continuity...

^ Or those of course! MX is an excellent pop album (if one considers it to be I that category) - I love it to bits, particularly tracks 1-8 but have trouble categorising it... I guess it best fits pop but really it's got everything :)

I don't see the point in bashing pop just because it's pop... Sure it's usually shorthand for unimaginative, crass / vulgar, lazy, etc. but that's not always the case. Just because a song's catchy and falls within the pop category doesn't mean it lacks creativity or makes it bad / poorly constructed music! Think the Beatles, Michael Jackson, Elton John...

I disagree :D I feel that pretty much all the original (ie non-remix) songs on Prospekts March are better than Lost! I vote for Lost! again... Get Lost! (Pardon the pun:laugh3:)

^ I find the album gets very draggy / heavy on its feet and is hard to enjoy at a normal (ie softer than loud) listening volume.... This improves once you put headphones on or turn it up past a certain volume level, otherwise I can't hear the richness of the mix - it's all compressed too narrowly together to make out and just feels draggy, boring and constipated. I turn it up nowadays when I listen to the album to get the 'spacey' feel and I then enjoy it immensely, but I think you shouldn't have to do it if the mix was done properly in the first place :D Otherwise it's a great album... Very rocky and imaginative indeed, and musically well-constructed - I just felt it was such a waste of good effort not getting the mix right! If they ever remaster it or do anything like that it would be a great opportunity to address that.

Someone should let them know the things we suffer for being their fans... It's nice supporting one of your producers but have they actually personally heard this 'stuff' (a stronger word comes to mind) they have just indirectly endorsed??? Just because he did a song for them doesn't mean they have to be permanently associated / supportive of him if things are not up to scratch!

I sort of wish Coldplay wouldn't / didn't feed any rumours until they were ready to let us know... That would let us all go into it without any preconceived ideas. CM has managed to keep quiet since mentioning some LP7 details in December. I'm a bit ambivalent about them playing Amazing Day... While I'm very excited that it's a glimpse into their new album, I guess I don't like the uncertainty surrounding it - is that the completed song, will the finished version be different, could it be canned, bla bla... I'm happy they played it, but I thought it was very uncharacteristic that nothing more was / has been said :\

I wondered there whether people might find this thread too negative, but then I thought all of us have little pet peeves about the guys that we wish were different / less annoying... It's good to let it out sometimes anyway :D ​As for actresses (Hollywood or otherwise), he needs to just stop... It's no good for his mental health - how can he tell when they have stopped acting or not? *joke* :laugh3: But seriously, he may have done better with a more down-to-earth / normal girl, but I guess the horse has bolted... It'd be hard to find someone who hasn't heard of Coldplay now. Funnily enough, I think you're right to some extent... They used to be more rigid in their definition of "good enough to go on the album"... Maybe now they give in easier, either so they can keep the peace or they can all go home earlier. Which leads me to my next quote... With their back catalogue of songs, they demonstrate that they clearly love and continue to play music in the older styles, and they're still doing new stuff and are good at it! I've often wondered how their B-sides can be so much better than an album song and not get picked... I guess it's the role the song fulfils in the album as well that counts. A CP folk album would be awesome! Have more patience with Will and Guy - I think they do more and more with each album - Will's starting to sing and do other instruments, and Guy's guitar lines have been stellar lately! Don't worry about the newer material! These songs at least seemed to have achieved the sounds that were intended... My main beef is with X&Y - am I the only one who feels someone f*ed up the decision with the album's volume / compression mix from input to output? The balance is terrible unless the volume is turned right up, not great if you're trying to listen to individual parts!!! Also some parts are too muted compared to the others... :\

Lol exactly. It's weird, what parent likes to listen to their kids/teenage music when it's music like that! When they are around 18 and start realizing how great Coldplay's first albums are, they might tell their dad: OMG , how did you go from writing songs with depth and meaning like Politik, Amsterdam, Spies and square one to writing about skies with stars, butterfly's and unicorns (LOL). How did that happen! I think there is truth to both your posts... Chris may well like corny / pop sounds anyway but I think part of it is related to trying to connect to his young kids - which dad wouldn't want to be cool for his own kids? So it probably follows that he will take an interest in some of the music his kids listen to anyway... we may well have Apple and Moses to *thank* for the changes to his song-writing - it may be somewhat difficult writing about insecurity when you're trying to be strong for your kids. And of course skies, butterflies and unicorns will show up in your song-writing when that's what you sing when you're tucking your kids in to bed lol :laugh3:
