Low-energy bulbs 'worsen rashes' The switch to energy-saving light bulbs may put thousands at risk of painful skin reactions, health charities warn. Fluorescent bulbs can exacerbate skin rashes in people with photosensitive skin conditions, experts said. The government is planning to prevent the sale of conventional bulbs by 2011 to cut carbon dioxide emissions. Several groups including the British Association of Dermatologists called for exemptions to allow those affected to continue using traditional bulbs. But representatives of the lighting industry said there would be alternatives to fluorescent lighting available. Health conditions which can involv…

Giant knickers put out house fire A family home was saved from burning down when a pair of giant knickers were used to put out a fire. Jenny Marsey's size 18-20 cotton pants were a lifesaver when they were grabbed to cover a frying pan fire at her home in Meryl Gardens, Hartlepool, Teesside. Her son and nephew were trying to fry some bread when the blaze broke out. But the quick-thinking pair used the Marks & Spencer underwear from a pile of washing, doused them in water, and threw them over the fire. Mrs Marsey, 53, said: "My £4.99 parachute knickers have come in handy for something. We've had a good laugh that they were a bit like a fire blanket." …

US town escapes 666 phone prefix A town in the US state of Louisiana is to be allowed to change its telephone prefix so that residents can avoid a number many associate with the Devil. Christians in Reeves have been unhappy since the early 1960s about being given the prefix, 666 - traditionally known as the Biblical "number of the beast". For the next three months, households will be able to change the first three digits of their phone numbers to 749. Mayor Scott Walker said CenturyTel's decision was "divine intervention". However, he admitted it helped that Louisiana's two senators had also lobbied for the change with the phone company and the state Public S…

I just got a brand new pair of Sennheiser headphones for Christmas this morning so I decided to experiment a little with higher audio formats. I usually use 128kbps mp3 encoding for my everyday listening purposes, but apparently it has quite a bit of quality loss when compressed from CD format. I ripped a few of my CDs to Apple Lossless to see if there was a difference, but so far I haven't noticed anything at all. Does anyone know any benefits to switching to lossless format from mp3?

By SADAQAT JAN and ZARAR KHAN, Associated Press Writers RAWALPINDI, Pakistan - Pakistan opposition leader Benazir Bhutto was assassinated Thursday in a suicide attack that also killed at least 20 others at a campaign rally, aides said. The death of the 54-year-old charismatic former prime minister threw the campaign for the Jan. 8 parliamentary elections into chaos and created fears of mass protests and violence across the nuclear-armed nation, an important U.S. ally in the war on terrorism. The attacker struck just minutes after Bhutto addressed thousands of supporters in the garrison city of Rawalpindi, 8 miles south of Islamabad. She was shot in the neck and …

De-Facto One Child Policy Urged in Australia Tamara McLean AAP Monday December 10, 2007 COUPLES who have more than two children should be charged a lifelong tax to offset their extra offspring's carbon dioxide emissions, a medical expert says. The report in an Australian medical journal called for parents to be charged $5000 a head for every child after their second, and an annual tax of up to $800. And couples who were sterilised would be eligible for carbon credits under the controversial proposal. Perth specialist Professor Barry Walters was heavily critical of the $4000 baby bonus, saying that paying new parents extra for every baby fuelled more chi…

Abroad, he expanded his outsize—if not always benign—influence on global affairs .
