VIENNA, Austria (AP) -- Repeatedly shutting her eyes against the glare of TV cameras, the Austrian teenager imprisoned for 81/2 years described in a nationally broadcast interview Wednesday the horror of being locked into her dark underground cell for the first time. "I was very distraught and very angry," Natascha Kampusch, now 18, told Austrian public broadcaster ORF in her first televised interview since bolting to freedom on August 23 while her captor busied himself with a cell phone call. Early in her captivity, Kampusch said she threw water bottles at the wall in frustration and despair and would have "gone crazy" if kidnapper Wolfgang Priklopil had not occasi…

Armed, masked men have burst into a bar in Mexico and flung five human heads onto a crowded dance floor, in an apparent warning to a rival drug gang. An official said 20 men entered the bar in Uruapan city, Michoacan state, fired into the air, forced revellers to lie down and then "threw down five heads". The men also left behind a note saying the act was "divine justice" carried out on behalf of "the family". Michoacan state's Pacific coastline has become a haven for drug traffickers. Magdalena Guzman, a spokeswoman for the state prosecutor's office, told the Associated Press news agency investigators believed the beheadings may be linked to drug smugglers. "No…

Start imagining Fried Praline Perfection and Fried Coke. Judges for the second annual Big Tex Choice Awards Contest chose Shirley London's Fried Praline Perfection as the tastiest fried delicacy and gave Abel Gonzales Jr.'s Fried Coke the creativity award. Both London and Gonzales have been thinking a long time about what to fry up this year. "I bough…

A Swiss man caught speeding on a Canadian highway has blamed his actions on the absence of goats on the roads. The man was caught driving at 161 km/h (100mph) in a 100 km/h (60mph) zone. A traffic officer's notes said the Swiss driver had said he was taking advantage "of the ability to go faster without risking hitting a goat". Canadian police spokesman Joel Doiron said he had never found a goat on the highways of eastern Ontario in his 20 years of service. "Nobody's ever used the lack of goats here as an excuse for speeding," Mr Doiron told the AFP news agency. "I've never been to Switzerland, but I guess there must be a lot of goats there," he said. The drive…

The man was a passenger on a Sept. 1 flight from Montreal to New York City when the incident happened. The airplane was heading toward the runway at the Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport when eyewitnesses said the Orthodox man began to pray. "He was clearly a Hasidic Jew," said Yves Faguy, a passenger seated nearby. "He had some sort of cover over his head. He was reading from a book. "He wasn't…

Bush Administration Quietly Plans NAFTA Super Highway Jerome R. Corsi / Human Events | June 14 2006 Quietly but systematically, the Bush Administration is advancing the plan to build a huge NAFTA Super Highway, four football-fields-wide, through the heart of the U.S. along Interstate 35, from the Mexican border at Laredo, Tex., to the Canadian border north of Duluth, Minn. Once complete, the new road will allow containers from the Far East to enter the United States through the Mexican port of Lazaro Cardenas, bypassing the Longshoreman’s Union in the process. British couch-potato children 'among world's laziest' Couch-potato British children are a short "chill out" from becoming the laziest in the world, according to an international study. UK youngsters spend 9.4 hours in front of a computer games console or TV screen each week, it said. That is just behind Australian children, who spend 10 hours a week relaxing in front of a screen - and significantly more than children in all the other locations interviewed. The average British child now spends the equivalent of half a year watching TV or playing computer games between the ages of seven and 16. The report - released to highlight the second year of the Tesc…

The mum-of-four was given the Very Best of Power Ballads set for a birthday present from her kids - and played it day-and-night. But a court was given a list of her favourite top 20 singalong songs - and banned her from playing music at home for 18 months. Heartbroken Jan…

Christian faces court over 'offensive' gay festival leaflets Evangelical Christian Stephen Green handed out 'offensive' leaflets A police force was caught up in a freedom of speech row after its officers arrested an anti-gay campaigner for handing out leaflets at a homosexual rally. South Wales police admitted evangelical Christian Stephen Green was then charged purely because his pamphlets contained anti-gay quotations from the Bible. Mr Green faces a court appearance today charged with using 'threatening, abusive or insulting words or behaviour' after his attempt to distribute the leaflets at the weekend 'Mardi Gras' event in Cardiff. Lawyer: ACLU wants to destroy vets' memorial An individual from San Diego who is "discomfited" over a veterans' memorial has prompted the American Civil Liberties Union to renew its attack on the Mt. Soledad Veterans Memorial. The Thomas More Law Center said yesterday it is preparing to defend the cross memorial from a new attack by the ACLU, this time in U.S. District Court in California. A 17-year-long battle apparently reached a conclusion earlier this month when Congress approved and President Bush signed legislation giving ownership and control of the memorial to the federal government. That essentially should have ended a state case over the monument th…

I'm a punk toothbrush ... you're a blues toothbrush The amazing invention that plays music as you clean your teeth ... via your jawbone Scientists have invented a remarkable toothbrush that lets you listen to pop songs while you scrub away - by transmitting the sound waves through your teeth and jawbone to your ear. The £7 device, called Tooth Tunes, plays for exactly two minutes - the amount of time dentists recommend should be devoted to brushing every morning and night. It is initially being targeted at children, but could also be marketed to the so-called iPod generation of adults. American maker Hasbro claims that Tooth Tunes will 'single-…

Jogger, 62, stranded waist-deep in mud for four days A 62-year-old jogger survived four days stranded in waist-deep mud after getting lost and falling into a swamp during his lunchtime run. Volunteers who had searched for Eddie Meadows since he disappeared from work last week found him 'stuck like glue' in a bog, covered in bug bites and drinking fetid water to stay alive. As rescuers approached, he looked up calmly and asked: "Do you have a phone? I want to call my wife." Police in Orlando, Florida, said that Mr Meadows survived by sipping water from the swamp around him and avoided sun exposure because he was under a shady tree canopy and slathered in mud. …

Iran’s regional position is key to its strength Wednesday 23 August 2006 Key messages: * The 'war on terror' removed the Taliban and Saddam Hussein, Iran's two greatest regional rivals, and strengthened Iran’s regional leverage in doing so; * Israel's failure to defeat Hizbullah has reinforced Iran's position as the region's focal point against US-led policy; * If seriously threatened, Iran has the potential to inflame the region yet further; * A US-sponsored military strike would be devastating for Iran, the Persian Gulf region and beyond Iran's influence in Iraq has superseded that of the US, and it is increasingly rivalling the US as the main act…

New map of Britain that makes Kent part of France...and it's a German idea Click the image to enlarge For centuries the people of Kent have called their county the Garden of England. So they might find it quite a surprise that - according to the European Union at least - they are actually part of France. Along with next-door Sussex, Kent has been rolled in with the Calais area on a map drawn up for Brussels. The counties now belong to the "Trans-Manche region". Under the plans from German cartographers, the East of England has also been shoehorned into a new region, which includes Scandinavia. The Western side of Britain has been lumped toge…
