Meet Grumpy - the nastiest cat on earth Beware: it's Grumpy. With his vicious fangs on display and weight firmly on his back legs, this tabby looks set to pounce on its unsuspecting prey. But it is not mice, birds or any other small animals he is after. It is not even the other pet cats he has already savaged in his neighbourhood. They were deemed too 'small' a target to terrify, so he decided to turn his attention to a much larger prey - humans. The pet cat, who has been named Grumpy because of his exploits, started entering all the cat flaps on one street in the search for food. He would make each house his own and would scare off the cats wh…

Germans plant bugs in our wheelie bins It looks just like any other wheelie bin, but unknown to the householder a bugging device has been inserted under the lip of its lid (bottom left). The bug itself is only a little bigger than a 1p piece (bottom right) Electronic spy 'bugs' have been secretly planted in hundreds of thousands of household wheelie bins. The gadgets - mostly installed by companies based in Germany - transmit information about the contents of the bins to a central database which then keeps records on the waste disposal habits of each individual address. Already some 500,000 bins in council districts across England have been fitted …

The conversation between Kyra Phillips and another woman was clearly heard as Mr Bush talked in New Orleans to mark the anniversary of Hurricane Katrina. During the chat, Ms Phillips talked about her husband and called her sister-in-law a "control freak". CNN apologised to viewers and the president, citing "audio difficulties". 'Handsome and loving' The gaffe happened when Ms Phillips' microphone remained on during a brief break from the set of the daily news programme Live From. The programme was …

Will America Survive to 2050? By Patrick J. Buchanan August 25 , 2006 "In 376 a large band of Gothic refugees arrived at the Empire's Danube frontier, asking for asylum. In a complete break with established Roman policy, they were allowed in, unsubdued. They revolted, and within two years had defeated and killed the emperor Valens -- the one who had received them -- along with two-thirds of his army, at the battle of Hadrianople." So writes Oxford's Peter Heather in "Fall of the Roman Empire: A New History of Rome and the Barbarians," who is convinced that Valens' welcoming of the Goths was the decision that sealed the fate of the empire. As recent headlines …

Police are hunting a gang of children who filmed themselves throwing a bike onto rail tracks in Greater Manchester, before posting the clip on a website. Three teenagers were seen throwing a bike over the top of a railway bridge onto tracks at Westhoughton in Bolton. The film, taken on a mobile phone, was posted on the internet site Youtube.com - where people share home videos - but has now been removed. Hackers have obtained the credit card details of almost 19,000 online shoppers from telecoms giant AT&T. The US company said it had notified shoppers at its online store of the security breach, which affected people buying high-speed DSL internet items. Security was breached at the weekend, the company said, and online stores were quickly shut down in response. AT&T said it would reimburse customers for any fraudulent transactions and pay for any necessary credit services. There were no indications that fraudulent transactions had been carried out before the stolen information came to light, AT&T said. Information concerns "We recognise t…

An investigation into how a copy of the long-awaited sequel to J M Barrie's children's classic Peter Pan was leaked to a newspaper in the US is under way. The book, called Peter Pan in Scarlet and written by author Geraldine McCaughrean, is due out on 5 October. But the New York Times published a summary of the plot on Tuesday. London's Great Ormond Street Hospital - which owns the copyright - and Oxford University Press said they are looking into how the manuscript was leaked. In its article, the New York Times revealed that Peter Pan in Scarlet is set in 1926 - more than 20 years after Barrie's play was first produced on the London stage. The highly-an…

Former Spice Girls manager Simon Fuller says he is developing a TV fashion show for ex-Spice Girl Victoria Beckham. "It will be more serious than a reality show but will still be entertaining because Victoria is so funny," he told Broadcast magazine. Fuller, who manages both Victoria and David Beckham, is responsible for the hit shows Pop Idol and American Idol. In the interview, Fuller, 46, said he was also planning a sitcom based around another former Spice Girl, Emma Bunton. "Emma wants to get into TV," he said. "She went to drama school and it's in her blood. We're going to give her a shot." Fuller has also been approached by comedians Matt Lucas and…

Music download security 'cracked' Microsoft technology that protects digital files from copyright infringement has been breached, according to reports. A program called Fairuse4wm has been posted on the net and is apparently capable of breaching Microsoft's Digital Rights Management (DRM) system. It could spell problems for internet music shops, potentially enabling users to download unlimited files. However, an analyst said Microsoft was probably working to "close the hole". DRM is used to control people's access to digital data. It is commonly employed on music downloading sites to restrict the use of music purchased and downloaded online to ensure copyr…

So who are your top five for premier league this year? Judging by what I've seen so far, and what I know... 1. Man Utd Another solid year for ManUre. They look like one of the teams to beat this year. Lots of fresh, young talent, esp Rooney, Ronaldo, and can't forget Carrick. Very underrated player in Fletcher, and Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes are playing better than they have in years. 2. Arsenal They're led by one of the greatest strikers to ever live and one of the most solid goalkeepers. Don't forget about Fabregas and all the other solid players they've got waiting to explode. Problem is they're a shallow team - and their top spot on my list is assuming t…

World's oldest woman dies at 116 Maria Esther de Capovilla - officially the world's oldest woman - has died in Ecuador aged 116, relatives said. Capovilla died at dawn on Sunday in the coastal city of Guayaquil after succumbing to pneumonia. Her funeral was planned for Monday. Born in 1889, the same year as Charlie Chaplin and Adolf Hitler, Capovilla was 22 when the Titanic sank and 79 when astronauts first set foot on the Moon. Her family said donkey milk might be key to her longevity. Capovilla was born in Guayaquil, to a well-to-do Ecuadorean family which traced its ancestry to the Spanish conquistadores. 16. How To Destroy The American Dream! Filed under: Borders — border @ 12:20 pm Comentary: We know Dick Lamm as the former Democratic Governor of Colorado. A brilliant college professor by the name of Victor Hansen Davis talked about his latest book, Mexifornia,” explaining how immigration - both legal and illegal - was destroying the entire state of California. He said it would march across the country until it destroyed all vestiges of The American Dream.Moment…

Harry Redknapp has hit out at Ben Thatcher for his 'horror' challenge on Portmouth midfielder Pedro Mendes. The Man City defender seemed to hit Mendes with a forearm at the start of the second half, leaving the Portuguese midfielder needing hospital treatment. "Off the field, you could not meet a nicer boy," said Redknapp of Thatcher. "Unfortunately, on the pitch he is capable of doing things like that. "It was an horrendous challenge and totally out of order." Mendes needed oxygen treatment on the side of the pitch after skidding into advertising hoardings. "As soon as I saw Thatcher running into the corner, I knew what was coming. I would have bet my l…

Revealed: The 10,000 A-level pupils hidden from school league tables A-level students celebrate earlier in the summer Schools are 'hiding' the A-level results of weaker pupils by forcing them to pay the exam fees themselves - so their grades do not show up in academic rankings. Figures released last night show that the results of 10,000 candidates were not included in this year's school league tables because pupils were encouraged to enter as "private candidates". Last night, experts said that the pressure to do well in the league tables was encouraging schools to the "cheat like footballers". The scam emerged after the father of an 18-year-old girl …
