  2. Monsoon Britain! Is the future cloudbursts and floods? Just when we thought it was safe to go back out into the weather, we are being hit with a new claim of a bizarre change to the traditional British climate. As we reel from the severest-ever drought — and sweltering July, the hottest month on record — scientists are now telling us that our damp and drizzly island is being increasingly battered by monsoon-style downpours. Research at Newcastle University — to be presented at the British Association’s Festival of Science in Norwich this week — shows rainstorms have doubled in intensity over much of the country during the past 40 years. Some parts of …

  3. Chelsea claim Gallas threatened to score own goal Chelsea claim unhappy French defender William Gallas sensationally threatened to score an own goal and refused to play for the club before he was sold to Arsenal as part of the deal which took Ashley Cole to Stamford Bridge. The Barclays Premiership champions took the unprecedented step of issuing a statement to inform their fans about the lack of respect the defender showed the club in a bid to get a move away from Chelsea. The statement revealed how he initially refused to play against Liverpool in last season's FA Cup semi-final and how, if selected to play against Manchester City in the first g…

  4. Legend Agassi makes tearful exit Agassi bowed to all four sides of the court for the last time Andre Agassi's 20-year career ended in a 5-7 7-6 (7-4) 4-6 5-7 defeat to German qualifier Benjamin Becker at the US Open on Sunday. The 36-year-old was clearly affected by the chronic back injury which hastened his decision to retire. Backed by a fiercely patriotic crowd, Agassi battled throughout but Becker's power proved too much. The American legend fought back tears as the Arthur Ashe crowd, along with B…

Now Wembley faces car parking fiasco Crisis-hit Wembley Stadium has suffered another setback - not enough car parking spaces for players and fans Stars and season-ticket holders could find themselves with nowhere to park at the new Wembley Stadium. The owners of the crisis-hit stadium can provide only a fraction of the 10,000 car parking spaces required. Senior figures involved with the £750million development have admitted they have planning permission for just 2,900 spaces and that it would take more than two hours for cars to get in and out of the parking available. And if pop superstars such as the Rolling Stones or Madonna are in concert at th…

  9. Father arrested for refusing to give back boys' ball When children playing in his street kicked their football through his hedge for the umpteenth time, Alastair Wood decided enough was enough. Not only could they not have their ball back, but he was going to keep it until he received an apology. To his astonishment, however, the 40-year-old father-of-two found himself arrested in his pyjamas, handcuffed and bundled into the back of a police car in front of his wife and crying daughter after being accused of theft. Yesterday he said: "The whole incident is absolutely beyond belief - words can't describe how ridiculous it all is. "It’s totally changed my attit…

Students 'should be paid for exam success' A-level pupils should receive a cash reward for doing well at maths, a leading scientist has proposed. Frances Cairncross, president of the British Association for the Advancement of Science, believes schoolchildren should be given a £500 'bounty' when they get an A grade in A-level maths. The reward, which would be split with teachers, would help halt the decline of the subject in state schools. The number of pupils taking A-level maths has plummeted by 22 per cent in recent years, with many opting to study 'softer' subjects which offer a better chance of good grades. The problem is particularly acute in state or mai…

Blair to target the ASBO babies Extraordinary crackdown: Tony Blair Tony Blair has unveiled a provocative campaign to crack down on future problem children before they are even born. He set out plans for massively increased state intervention in the homes of 'nuisance' families to tackle anti-social behaviour. In a desperate attempt to show that his premiership has not run out of steam despite increasing demands from Labour MPs for him to step down, he said 'pre-birth' action would be taken if necessary. The plan for what were promptly dubbed 'Fasbos' - anti- social behaviour orders for foetuses - prompted outrage at Westminster last night. Critics …

UNITED NATIONS (CNN) -- The U.N. Security Council on Thursday voted 12-0 for a resolution that would put a U.N. peacekeeping force in Sudan's war-torn Darfur region, provided the African nation does not oppose it. But Sudan's envoy to the United Nations, Ambassador Omar Bashir, described the resolution as hastily drawn up. The U.N. plan would beef up the financially strapped African Union's force of 7,000 troops, which has been unable to quell the violence there. Sudan, however, has steadfastly opposed a U.N. peacekeeping force taking over from the African Union. The resolution drew abstentions from China, Russia and Qatar, with their representatives criticizi…

Sorry, you can't have the internet... you're over 70 A silver mouse for the silver surfers After walking the Great Wall of China and making plans for a trip to Russia, Shirley Greening-Jackson thought signing up for a new internet service would be a doddle. But the young man behind the counter had other ideas. He said she was barred - because she was too old. The 75-year-old would only be allowed to sign the forms for the Carphone Warehouse's TalkTalk phone and broadband package if she was accompanied by a younger member of her family who could explain the small print to her. Mrs Greening-Jackson, who sits on the board of several charities, said: "…

100 years old... and still hard at work Not every worker would be given the day off to celebrate their birthday. But, at the grand old age of 100, Buster Martin is entitled to some special treatment from the boss. So, instead of carrying out his duties maintaining a fleet of vans, he will today take a VIP tour of Chelsea Football Club, his favourite team. Mr Martin - who is believed to be Britain's oldest worker - is now in his 90th year of employment. Three years ago he quit his job on a market stall but was looking for work again within a few weeks because he had 'too much time on his hands'. 'Boredom is a big killer of men,' he said. 'I…

  16. Women think a man's a catch on £50,000 a year In it for the money: Some women, following the example of Demi Moore's character in Indecent Proposal, are attracted to the size of a man's wallet. Men need to earn about £50,000 a year before women consider them wealthy and successful, a survey has found. One in ten women have even higher expectations, looking for a salary of more than £100,000 before they are really impressed. Men are a little less demanding. They regard women who earn £42,000 as wealthy and successful. Forty-five per cent of women said a healthy bank balance was their top priority when looking for a partner. In contrast, a mer…

  17. Bush: Iraq a 'decisive ideological struggle' President predicts victory despite disillusionment The Associated Press Updated: 2:32 p.m. ET Aug 31, 2006 SALT LAKE CITY - President Bush on Thursday predicted victory in the war on terror at a time of increasing public anxiety at home, likening the struggle against Islamic fundamentalism with the fight against Nazis and communists. With just over two months until Election Day, Bush said opponents of the war in Iraq who are calling for a plan to bring home troops would create a disaster in the Middle East. "Many of these folks are sincere and they're patriotic but they could be -- they could not be more wrong," …

  18. West Ham have pulled off a major coup by signing Argentina World Cup stars Carlos Tevez and Javier Mascherano. Striker Tevez, 22, and midfielder Mascherano, 22, join the Hammers from Corinthians on permanent deals for undisclosed fees. The pair have been linked with moves to Manchester United, Arsenal and Chelsea. But the Hammers are thought to have struck a deal with Media Sports Investments, who own the rights to the two players. MSI were linked with a takeover of West Ham last season but eventually pulled out. Both Tevez and Mascherano have returned to Argentina's squad for Sunday's friendly against Brazil at Arsenal's Emirates Stadium after signings …

"I would be honored to direct it," Bowman said in an interview while promoting Nightmares & Dreamscapes: From the Stories of Stephen King, the upcoming TNT anthology series. "The only thing is I can't ask myself to do it. That's up to [The X-Files creator] Chris [Carter] and the studio. I've always said—and I've always believed, most importantly—I can't wait to see that film. If I'm invited to participate as a director, great, and if I'm not, that would be fine, t…

Misery for commuters as bright sunshine delays train Rush hour commuters delayed for up to half an hour were astonished to be told their trains had been held up because the sun was too bright. The passengers, familiar with previous infamous seasonal excuses for delays including 'leaves on the line', and 'the wrong kind of snow', thought they had heard it all until rail operator c2c revealed the bizarre new explanation for late-running services. The railway company claimed that a train driver had to be given a hand by station staff at Laindon in Essex after complaining the sun's glare made it impossible to check in a mirror on the platform if anyone was getting in or…

"A brief overview of the situation is always valuable, so as a service to all Americans who still don't get it, I now offer you the story of the Middle East in just a few paragraphs, which is all you really need. Here we go: The Palestinians want their own country. There's just one thing about that: There are no Palestinians. It's a made up word. Israel was called Palestine for two thousand years. Like "Wiccan," "Palestinian" sounds ancient but is really a modern invention Before the Israelis won the land in the 1967 war, Gaza was owned by Egypt, the West Bank was owned by Jordan , and t…

STONEY CREEK, Ont.—The family of an 87-year-old diabetic great-grandmother says she is the latest victim of new, tighter security regulations at airports. Hetwig Strohmeier is supposed to take heart medication every four hours, but had to go almost 12 hours without it after the drugs were confiscated Friday by screening officers at Pearson airport, said her son Helmut Strohmeier. "What did they think were in the pill bottles with my mother's name on them — dynamite?" said an irate Helmut Strohmeier, who is demanding answers from the Greater Toronto Airport Authority. The woman, who does not speak English, has had four angioplasty procedures, bypass surgery and a …

An architect of Iraqi descent has said he was forced to remove a T-shirt that bore the words "We will not be silent" before boarding a flight at New York. Raed Jarrar said security officials warned him his clothing was offensive after he checked in for a JetBlue flight to California on 12 August. Mr Jarrar said he was shocked such an action could be taken in the US. US transport officials are conducting an inquiry after a complaint from the US Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee. JetBlue said it was also investigating the incident but a spokeswoman said: "We're not clear exactly what happened." 'Authoritarian regimes' Mr Jarrar's black cotton T-shirt …
