Yea it's gonna be good. It's at the Orlando house of blues. Holds 1000 people or so I think. It's pretty small.

Life in the Big Chair

Travis Plays Houston This Weekend

Plus: A Weekend of Metal & Disco

If a band names itself after a character played by actor Harry Dean Stanton -- in “Paris, Texas” -- then you get the sense they possess a good dose of intelligence and quirkiness. That’s been confirmed over the course of a career that has seen Scottish group Travis become one of Britain’s most beloved bands. They haven’t had quite the same impact this side of the Atlantic, but they’ve earned a loyal following amongst those devoted to the kind of atmospheric and melodic Brit-rock sound spearheaded by the likes of Snow Patrol and Coldplay.

But they’re no bandwagon jumpers: Travis are rightfully being recognized as key pioneers of that sound. For instance, Coldplay singer-songscribe Chris Martin recently premiered a new Travis tune, “Big Chair,” on English radio, noting that “Travis is the band that invented my band and lots of others.”

Travis lead guitarist/multi-instrumentalist Andy Dunlop says that “Chris was being a bit generous then. I think Coldplay would have been a band without Travis. I think what we did was make that music popular, and maybe paved the way for a few people to be heard. A lot of bands make that sort of music but maybe the record labels and press weren’t listening. I think the success of ‘The Man Who’ opened doors for people.”

That 1999 CD, the band’s second release, is the one that launched them into the big time. Thanks to hit single -- and Brit-rock classic -- “Why Does It Always Rain On Me?,” the disc topped the charts and earned a BRIT Award for best album, while a 237 gig world tour helped broaden their audience.

Their new CD, “The Boy With No Name” is their fifth, and arguably their best since “The Man Who.” “The reaction has been pretty good,” says Dunlop. “There are people that just hate us and what we stand for. We’re not a cool band; we just do songs.”

The bulk of Travis’ songs are written by lead singer, Fran Healy, though Dunlop co-wrote two of the new tracks. “We’ve never really had a process in this band,” Dunlop says. “Everybody just writes bits all the time. Mostly Fran will come in with a song on acoustic guitar and we’ll work through it. He’s a great writer so you just let him go and do his thing.”

Dunlop has been there from the beginning, back to the days of an earlier Glasgow band, Glass Onion. Their original singer was replaced by Fran Healy in 1991, and Glass Onion became Travis a couple of years later. “We were pretty ambitious even back then,” recalls Dunlop. “We always wanted to take it around the world and be a touring band. That is what keeps bands alive, going out and playing in front of people.”

Connecting with some of his musical idols has been a thrill for Dunlop. “Meeting people like Bowie and McCartney has been amazing. These are people whose pictures you used to have on the wall, they’re part of your musical DNA…”

Travis plays the Verizon Wireless Theatre (520 Texas Avenue, Houston) on Friday (7/27) at 8PM; tickets are 27.50 and are available through Ticketmaster…

Well, Fran told the audience at a gig in the Netherlands (in June) that they would be back within a couple of months. So expect more European dates to be announced soon!

fantastic!:dance::dance:

soooo...I went to the Houston show Friday night and as I expected, it was an amazing show!! The majority of the crowd, however, were disappointing, as not many people seemed to be awake - HELLO?!?! Anyway, I was very close to the stage (planned to be in the front row but I had to work so didn't get there as early as planned) and stood in the center. I sang to every song and danced like a fool, though I'm usually pretty reserved at concerts. Dougie and Fran smiled at me some and made lots of eye contact. Yay!!

Anyway, I brought the sleeve to The Man Who (since it's basically my fav and I thought I should just pick one to get signed as not to be greedy) and waited outside for autographs. Of course, I wasn't disappointed - I got everyone's autograph, chatted with all of them and even got a picture with Fran and one with Dougie. I could've gotten one with Andy and Neil but I only had my oldie cell phone and my friend wasn't next to me to take the pic at that time. But I'll be sure to come better prepared next time!! Anyway, they were all amazingly friendly and fantastic guys, just like I had been told by others. Fran and Dougie even drew a heart for me when they signed - awww! So I'll try to put the couple of pics up that I took, though the quality will likely suck.

I love Travis!!

good job!!!could you post those pics?:)

Liz26, you really had great moments!! And you got their autographs and took a picture with them! I envy you soooo damn much!! Lucky you!!! :D

Btw, how long did you have to wait before you finally could meet them? Just curious. :)

:wacky: Could you post the pics?

I went to the Orlando show last night. The concert itself was awesome. I was on the barricade right in front of Dougie. It was great. The show ended around 10:30. Anyway, after the show about 60 fans were waiting outside of this huge wooden fence. Behind the fence are semi trucks and their tour bus. People are coming out of the huge fence door all the time to unload and to let the semi trucks out. Well, it's about 12:30 and the band hasn't left in their bus yet, but they haven't come out. The crowd has dwindled to maybe 30 fans, including myself. Roadies for the band kept coming out saying "10 more minutes, they're gonna come out" to us.

We kept asking when the guys were coming out to see us. One guy said that they were all taking shots and relaxing because it was the last night of the US tour. Understandable. Well, around 12:45 Andy came stumbling out the door. Nice as can be, he got pictures and autographs with all of us. After about 15 minutes he left. About 15-20 minutes later, all the semi-trucks are gone. The tour bus is all that's left. The house of blues workers remove part of the fence, and the bus starts to leave. One of the bus windows is exposed, and we all see a hand pull down the blinds so that they wouldn't see our disappointed faces. They then drove off.

Everyone had waited HOURS to just get a quick picture and autograph. The other members of Travis didn't even acknowledge us. We never saw them. I've been reading on this forum that the guys have come out to almost every show and hung out for a while. Me and many other fans were very upset. I know that they don't have to come out all the time, but they could have sent out a messenger saying "look guys, they are not coming out tonight". I would have been sad, but fine. At least they would have told us what's going on. I feel very disrespected.

awwwwwwwwww.....that sucks!...I can understand you...I mean look at Travisonline...there are sooooooo many people who have a pic with Fran or any other band member....I mean you're right when you say that they do not HAVE to come out...but at least they could have waved you or something absurd like that...

Yea, it did suck :(. I posted it on the Travis website forum, and it has already gotten 6 pages of response. Unfortunately, most of them are just people telling me not to complain or just being plain mean. I know they aren't obligated to come out, but just the way the whole thing happened didn't sit well with me. Hopefully one day, I'll get to meet all them. Andy was very nice though.

haha I can imagine....and I guess all those people telling you you shouldn't complain are exactly those who have a pic of them with Fran in their avi and who would have cried if they didn't meet them....:wacky:

Not long at all - Neil came out in like 10 min. Andy came out about 30 minutes later and next was Dougie about 5 minutes after that and Fran was literally right behind him. When I left, they were still there signing autographs. They are just fantastic guys!!

Oh, and I will post the pics soon - have to get them out of my phone. Sorry to say though, I'm sure the quality won't be good. I really need a new phone. But Fran did tell me that in about 6 months to a year they are hoping to be back to the states for another tour, maybe something different like a double-headliner type of thing. When that time comes, I'll show up with a digital camera and will get some better pics. Anyway - I'm still buzzing from that night - I'm so happy...

:))

OMG - I cannot believe it!!! That really sucks - so unlike any other story I've ever heard about Travis. And definitely nothing like my experience for sure...I would've been quite disappointed as well! Maybe they were just having an off night?? I dunno...hopefully you'll still go to the next show and will get to see them then.

I just can't get over it!! There has to be some reason though. Now I'm sad...

:(

ohhh sounds awesome

congrats!!

That's why I was disappointed. I had heard stories of them coming out all the time. I guess I just caught them on a bad night or something. I keep telling myself that there's a reasonable explanation. Right now though, I can't think of it. Yea I will definitely see them again if they come back. For sure.

I'm so sorry that you had a bad experience. :( I do too think they have their reasons (hopefully) just like the others have said here. Well, at least you got the chance to see them live and I'm sure you'll get to meet them someday. :)
