:thinking:call me stuck in the mud, but IMHO, sounds like Eno is yet again sprinkling his influences on bands to push them into the 21st century, if you will, .......growth is essential, of course, but I prefer loving the sounds from a band that spawned my love to begin with.

Its just more of the Eno "taste a new flavour" influence, and Ill be glad when he goes back into the shadows....

You know, that is true - Eno does "modernize" everyone in his style, but perhaps they all need some growth experiences.. maybe more avenues would be helpful, so more than one creative set of ideas is at work at the same time...

It's a channel, and I suppose Eno has been the choice because of the guarantee of success; sort of a prize-fighter's coach for musicians..

Since I'm not in the know, who else is out there, as a source for musical inspiration? Bernie, who was Elton John's inspiration? Joan Baez who was Dylan's inspiration? How about Dylan himself?? Arlo Guthrie? And what happened to the Beatles' Billy Shears? ;)

(Aha, or Bunnymen?)

as i said..i may be stuck in the mud...i just prefer my Chrissy to keep strumming the "we never change, do we?";)

even EJ`s Taupin through the years, still kept EJ sounding, well, EJ!

that's maybe what you would prefer but as a artist moving ahead into the future as eno tends to do with the people he works with is what a true artist is looking for, different directions it's what makes the creative juices flowing to keep in the same style year after year isn't progessive and productive for an artist. And what draws new fans year after year instead of fans like me who have been diehard u2 fan for the last 22 yrs. I feel they reinvent themselves all the time and i love that about them.

I always know when I hear a U2 song mainly cuz of the edge's guitar riffs which i love..

When you go to a U2 show which I have been doing for a long time you always see a full range of ages of people: from kids to people in their 50s+. That's another thing I love about them, their reach to all kinds of people goes above and beyond what you see with a lot of other bands who have been around for 20 plus years, in their case over 30 yrs.

Hmm.. Coldplay could go back to (and this is terrible - I forget - who was their original manager?? I'm drawing a blank..). Anyhow, all groups try new musical styles to stay fresh and interesting, and so Coldplay is really no exception... If the Beatles had stuck with "she loves you, Yea, Yea, Yea..." it might have got a bit old and outdated fast.

Maybe Coldplay needs to get back to more introspective qualitites they had before; dreamland twilight stuff? Poetic incoherent half-comotose drifting in-and-out of consciousness stuff?:P

wtf?

wtf are you talking about? I wasn't referring to you in that post.. You have a problem with me take it to a PM.

Idk what that's (^) about but I think miscommunication was at hand.

Well I'm in DC and I'm really hoping that its not too crazy on Sunday, so I can see Bono. I mean...this is like a once in a lifetime chance. Well for me it is because I haven't seen a U2 concert as of yet. It's not U2, but Bono is pretty cool just by himself.

My impression on U2's new sound is that I like it when bands innovate. When they sort of branch out. The reason bands like U2 and Radiohead are thought of so highly is because of this. Its also why bands like Oasis are considered shit now. The bands who can reinvent themselves are always the one's worth paying attention to. Sure a reinvention might spawn failure (zoorapa and pop for u2 - at least financially and in terms of mainstream acceptance), but its better than what Oasis has done by never trying anything new and appealing only to their base.

I think there's a difference between someone who listens to music and has their favorite bands, and a music lover. Everyone likes music (minus Scrooge McDuck), and of course everyone has their favorites. But music lovers are the people who arent simply satisfied with a band existing within their musical interest base. They essentially have broader musical horizons.

U2 appeals to this. I just hope this new album keeps some of that U2 core that I love, but also forces me to see outside of what I thought I loved.

very well said! That's what I was trying to get at before. You would think I could articulate better being such a u2fanatic as I have been for the last 22 yrs! Jeez...tongue tied sometimes..:dozey:

I am going to this event too. Reuters and BBC are claiming U2 are going to be there but I am not buying it. The official website for the inauguration has only Bono there so I am trusting what they are stating more than any other source.

I read somewhere that the event is going to start at 2pm and televised at 7pm so I am gonna have to get down there earlier than I thought..ugh this is stressing me out!

I am so excited for the new U2 album, and I am equally excited for the tour.

So do I! There are rumours on u2tour.de that U2 will start with a European tour at the end of June, beginning with Barcelona. The US would be next in autumn then. ;)

u2.com just comfirmed that the whole band is gonna be there!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:D

'We Are One'

U2 join a stellar line up of artists at The Lincoln Memorial in Washington this Sunday for 'We Are One: The Obama Inaugural Celebration'. Don't miss it. It's open to the public and aired on HBO.

Beyonce, Mary J. Blige, Garth Brooks, Sheryl Crow, John Legend, Usher, Shakira, Bruce Springsteen, will.i.am, and Stevie Wonder are among the acts performing while Jamie Foxx, Martin Luther King III, Queen Latifah and Denzel Washington are among those reading historical passages.

'We Are One:The Obama Inaugural Celebration at the Lincoln Memorial' is the opening celebration for the 56th Presidential Inaugural, presented by HBO this Sunday, January 18 (7:00-9:00 p.m. ET/PT).

More news as we get it.

ok here's the deal hbo is broadcasting it as open signal so that means that anyone that has cable, satellite can watch it here in the US. Also, you can watch it online at hbo.com.

from the official inauguration website:

HBO will televise the event on an open signal, working with all of its distributors to allow Americans across the country with access to cable, telcos or satellite television to join in the Opening Celebration for free.

YAYAYAYAYAY!!!

Thanks - that's uplifting - even better than the real thing!!

In the spirit of the times, I'm glad they're offering it to everyone. It's a time when we need to all come together as a nation, and have some Comradery.. Thanks again - worth noting on the calendar..

Cool! I thought it wsa just going to be Bono.

^nope the whole band is going to be there! I can't wait..! so excited that I am going its going to madness with all the people but hey that's ok! AND ITS GOING TO BE FREEZING COLD! UGH. I am layering up and bringing my instant hand warmers with me.

Anyone got the song list? I hope they play Beautiful Day and maybe One Tree Hill.

how many songs do bands usually do at these type of things?

it's only a 2 hr concert so every artist is only going to be able to play one song each. The rumor is U2 will play Pride.. I imagine that maybe Mary J Blige will do One and probably Bono will come back on stage and duet that with her.

Neil Mc Cormick just gave his review of the new album.. He is such a witty writer, love his stuff!

U2's No Line In The Horizon: the new album

I got to hear the new U2 album in its complete and final form. I can't say too much about it now, for fear that the skylight of my attic office would explode in a shower of glass and a black pvc clad figure descend from wires to seize my computer, leaving behind only a pair of blue tinted wraparound sunglasses.

Prone to exaggeration: Bono of U2 PHOTO EPA

Actually, I'd be more likely to find a drum stick rammed up my hard drive. Bono is the least of my worries. If it was up to him, the U2 singer would take this album around to every house in the country and sell it door to door with a money back guarantee. He says 'No Line In The Horizon' is the album U2 always wanted to make. He always was an excitable fellow, but he might actually be right.

So what can I tell you without infringing copyright? It took two listens to find my way into it, which has to be good a thing. It is dense, twisty, shiny, modern pop music, a big mash up of Eno ambience, Edge electricity, rhythm and soul. There are verses and choruses, though not necessarily in that order (and quite often its hard to tell which is which). It doesn't feel the need to hit you over the head, but has the Ninja confidence to sneak up and take you unawares. It makes love like its making war. It hasn't frontloaded all its big guns. There is a surge in the middle perfectly timed to quell any uprising, and a killer twist at the end. It could be the glittering sonic mind meld of pop rock and soul that Zooropa wanted to be. Or maybe, like Bono, I'm am just prone to exaggeration.

Bono says I listen to their new albums like a bodyguard. He is probably right. I approach with trepidation, protective of the band's place in my heart and ready to defend them should they drop their guard or their standards. Fortunately, they haven't had to call on my fighting skills yet (though we have had a couple of skirmishes).

A disclaimer: look, I am well aware there are a lot of people out there who find The Man Who Saved The World (as he is known to close friends such as the Pope) (only kidding) a pompous, egotistic, over-bearing, messianic megalomaniac (I think that about covers it), and furthermore consider U2 to be overblown, over-rated stadium rockists with nary a hint of nuance or subtlety. Some of you read this blog and leave derogatory messages every time I mention Bono's name. Well, get over it. Yes, I like U2. Yes, I went to school with them and was a fan from before they were even U2, but only because they were great then, and they are great now.

Here's the thing: I am not alone in holding them in high esteem. They have been together for over 30 years and sold 130 million albums around the world. Many key rock bands of the moment (Coldplay, The Killers, Arcade Fire, Kings Of Leon, Keane) openly incorporate their influence, and covet their slot at the top of the pile. Brandon Flowers of the Killers recently told me, "They're unbelievable, but they're getting old ... It feels like it's time." On this evidence, anyone who wants to shift U2 off their pedestal is going to have to take it by force.
