The Hardest Part: A Joke

Musically, I love this song; it may be one of the best Coldplay's done. Probably not, but it's still pretty good.

However, the lyrics are sooooooooo out of place. I was listening to it this morning, and I couldn't help but smile and be happy. Then I realized the words, "the hardest part was letting go not taking part / you really broke my heart" They don't fit in with the bouncy happiness of the song at all. I almost had to laugh at the thought of what Chris was on when he decided to do this.

I know! But I think it all fits in... Since the album is about extremes and "the tension of opposites" as Chris puts it, in a way this song encapsulates X&Y perfectly- they're such geniuses, and the audaciousness to be putting these contrasts together all within a song! The upbeat mood of the music tempers what would have been devastating lyrics had it been matched with something more sombre.

The more I listen to it and think about it, the more I feel that X&Y is a concept album... Only that Coldplay have gone about it in a subtle way, sort of masking it as a mainstream album of assorted hits.

Aww thanks, Steph. I just love this band... I think very often they are far deeper and smarter than a lot of people give them credit for. And yet at the same time they manage to reach out to the masses too. I do wonder though sometimes whether I put them up on a pedestal too much... For all I know, some parts of X&Y (the album) could've been them just mashing up good melodies with some terrible lyrics coz they ran out of ideas  Then again, songs like The Hardest Part and all their non-album / discarded material make me think that they must've done all this 'dumbing down' for a purpose ;)

i think that the song's upbeat and happy tempo dont really fit with the sad lyrics. although this is very strange and unusual, songs usually fit with the music, this time, it shows irony. it is a symbol of opposites of emotion. the whole album is based on opposites. sometimes(at least this has happened to me) you feel ok about something even though something sad has happened to you....

:D

This is my least fave song on x&y, it sounds like a song that should be used in a mentos commercial

mentos.jpg

about the mentos thing....i believe that about X&Y, the song. everytime i listen to it(despite being one of my favs on the album) i think that it could be used to sponsor Walgreens...

picture this:

*the chrorus of x&y playing on background, while they show various pics of children and older folk shopping at walgreens, not just medicines...

then after, the oooo part of the song is done...you hear a voice saying:

"shop only at walgreens"

wow.........reeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeally HOPE the song WASN'T INSPIRED BY PORN.....one because that's kind of singking to a low level, and two because of these lyrics in the song (call me gross, and i prolly am, but let's hope it wasn't porn he was talking about)

"I could feel it go down

You left the sweetest taste in my mouth "

yeeccchhh..........as to the song itself, i don't like it all that much........it's like the "a whisper" song on X&Y..........just a bit of filler

I think a whisper is coldplay's worst song. They're only song that I dont like. I love the hardest part. I wish it was a little longer though. It kind of just fades away. If it was longer and had a third chorus it would be a great song. A lot of coldplay's songs could be better if they were longer.

^yep' date=' i would love some of their songs if they were like sigur ros songs...i would love if the hardest part was 11 minutes [/quote']

maybe in future when they're into the next stage of their careers... Right now they're focused on crafting good standard pop songs :) I do sooo look forward to them writing epics :D

remember; it was inspired by porn. :)

:o

Yuch, Is this _really_ true? Is the interview somewhere? Oh gosh, I really liked this song but I always wondered about the lyrics a bit... and ew, now they seem to make sense, in a err.. gross way, like calvin1663 pointed out....

Chris said it was inspired by porn on Rove, but c'mon people he was just kidding! That interview is up somewhere in this forum.
