The Smashing Pumpkins' Billy Corgan: 'Major record labels have squeezed the excitement out of music'

Frontman thinks that the industry is 'rewarding the wrong end of the art world'

The Smashing Pumpkins' Billy Corgan has spoken out about major record labels.

The frontman, who is currently releasing the group's free 44-song album, 'Teargarden By Kaleidyscope', one song at a time, thinks the current system has "squeezed the excitement out of music".

"Something about the need for the major label system to corner the market has squeezed the excitement out of music," Corgan told SpinnerMusic.co.uk. "It's almost like the restaurant where the prices are too high - you can't enjoy your food. You feel like you're getting ripped off, but you don't know why. Fans overall have rebelled."

Corgan continued by saying that he thinks the industry is made up of "middle-of-the-road non-risk-takers".

"Most people don't sit around and intellectualize it as much as I do," he explained. "They should. The last 10 years, there's plenty of evidence that people don't want to buy music the way they once did. I don't know how many different ways people can tell [the music business] that."

"My caveat is that now we have a system of middle-of-the-road non-risk-takers that seem to be risk-takers but aren't really," he added. "It's systemically rewarding the wrong end of the art world."

As previously reported, the band have recently releaseed a new EP called 'Teargarden By Kaleidyscope Vol. II - The Solstice Bare'.

^ Billy has a point. However, since he whines and complains about everything, no one even listens to him. Also, he has to understand the role of record labels. They are a business and in it to make money. They are putting money into what the people want and what will sell. People have a responsibility to demand more artistically adventurous music, and the record labels will follow.

We've seen all of this before. The world was listening to goofy hairmetal until bands like Guns N Roses and Nirvana came along and made people feel silly for doing so. That snapped the music industry into a entirely different direction.

Also, almost every artist that is considered adventurous, yet still a household name, has put out a very commercial record and used "the machine" to get their music out there. From that pont, they move to the margins, and people either follow or they don't. But most people wouldn't even know about them if they weren't on the radio with some mainstream sound.

I was searching for a song of them written and sung by James Iha, but cannot find it.

I think I had it on a tape somebody had made for me. I quite liked it, 'twas pretty accoustic, I think?

It could be "...Said Sadly", or maybe "Take Me Down"

BTW, Billy announced that a new record is coming this year called Oceania and he's going to reissue and remaster the whole back catalog of SP, starting with Gish, Siamese Dream and Pisces Escariot this year, MCIS, Adore and TAFH next year and both MACHINA albums on 2013.

I'm really more interested about the reissues than the new record, to be honest.

Is he still doing that Teargarden by Kalidoscope project?, I lost interest quickly because it wasn't all being released at once.

It's been put on hold as of now, mainly to focus on the production of Oceania.

Still, you haven't missed a lot. The last song he released from TBK ("Owata") is dreadful.

I was hoping for a studio version of As Rome Burns that would have been great.

I don't know, i mean, Owata was a nice little tune back in 2009. Now it's sounds like the opening theme from My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic. I like As Rome Burns, i just don't want that song to suffer the Teargarden treatment.

It could be added to Oceania though (that is, if Oceania is actually an album with re-recorded songs that were played live but not included on Teargarden)

Was wasting time on last.fm and discovered that I really like them.

This thread keeps re-appearing every 2 years for like a page of posts and then disappears again. I barely ever listen to them anymore and reading my posts at the start of this thread remind me what a stupid little kid I was.

Oh I'm a year and a half early. ):
