learning languages

Featured Replies

i'm gonna apply for university soon and i have to take two language courses. i never liked learning languages at school and i have no idea which one to take. i'm gonna take english as my first language course, because it's the only foreign language i have learnt that i can use actually, plus i'm gonna spend three months in england before i go to uni.

but i have no idea about the other language. i can take french, spanish, italian, russian or japanese. i've been learning french and spanish at school, but i never understood its grammar.

so can anyone speak russian or japanese? is it very hard to learn? because i think i'd have a problem with any latin language.

i just have to take those courses, i won't actually need them for my studies.

which languages can you speak and which one would you like to learn?

I think at least russian is very very hard to learn..of course i'm not sure about that but anyway

I speak english, obviously. I've been taking spanish for 3 years now, and can read it fairly well. I suck at writing and speaking it though!

I don't know what I'd like to learn, maybe Italian? That's always seemed like a very romantic language to me, for whatever reason.

I speak spanish, french and english, I'm learning greek and latin... lol

if you choose spanish maybe I may help you.. hehe

I speak french... sort of... I tried to learn Elvish once (Quenya - yeah, I'm a geek... so what) but that messed with my head- You could tell it was invented by a proffesional linguist.

I've always wanted to learn Gaelic. I was going to take a class in it this year, but it conflicted with one of my required classes, so I couldn't.

Haha Erin...I tried to teach myself Quenya too! Downloaded those online lessons. However it was quite a failed attempt for me as well. :dozey: Sounds so pretty though...one day I'd love to try my hand at it again.

I speak English (which goes without saying), French (looooove it) and I'm learning Spanish. I'm a big fan of languages. :P

i advice you to learn french.....which one were you better in??? if you were better in french learn french, if you were better in spanish learn spanish.... UP TO YOU!

i think russian is a hard one,especially for europeans,but it's a beatiful language... :p so i would learn it if i wasn't russian

about japanese ask Lea :idea2: :uhoh:

i dont know about japanese, but i know russion is really hard kanguage to speak cause the pronounciation is hard... i know how yo count till 8, but i cant till 10 cause 9 is really hard to say

I speak portuguese, english, french, german, italian and understand spanish (can't really say i speak it)... i think for now it's not bad... i tried to learn dutch once but it's really hard...

@sally: i'd recomend you spanish... i know grammar it's not easy but usually somehow the swiss get quite easily the spanish accent... or maybe not, just an opinion...

that's a lot to learn Mo... ;)

Yes, it is.But I like learning languages so I'm up for it

hmm.. take that language which is easier for you. I dont know how this thing goes in your country, but here, if you want to study a language with absolutely no previous knowledge from high school, you need to go to a language course.

well... I'm speaking and learning Slovene, English, French and Italian. I understand a bit of Spanish, Portugal (veery little) and other Slavic languages (I want to learn Russian, too).

Japanese is a nice language, but pronounciation is a bit hard, maybe because they stress all syllables, and because their writing is hard to learn. (After all, you need to know more than 100(not sure about the real number) signs to read fluently.

thanks a lot for you replies.

thanks, that's great. i've been learning spanish for more than three years now. i like the language, but i don't understand its grammar. i mean there are many tenses and it's really difficult to find out which one to use. some don't even exist in german.

i advice you to learn french.....which one were you better in??? if you were better in french learn french' date=' if you were better in spanish learn spanish.... UP TO YOU![/quote']

the problem about french is that i'm swiss. in a part of switzerland people speak french, which means that you have to start to learn this language very early. so they expect you to be pretty good at it.

i don't think my spanish is better, but there are some people, who haven't had any spanish lessons before. so the level won't be the same.

i'd rather take spanish.

i like russian, but i think i might have problems to learn it because i'm really not talented in languages. thanks for your advice.

the same here... so most people think russian is hard to learn. so probably not the best choice for me. thank you very much!

you're right! pronunciation ain't difficult, spelling ain't difficult either, expect for the accents, i never really got that. i only have a problem with it's grammar.

i don't wanna study a language, i wanna study law. you just have to take to language courses here, so you only have to have previous knowledge in french and english, because every swiss stundent had to learn this languages at school before.

i like japanese too and i also think it's an important language. i didn't know that there are so many signs. i thought every letter was a sign in japanese, so i thought there would be more or less the same numbers of signs as letters. i think in chinese every word is a sign, so there have to be thousands of signs.

anyway thank you very much for your help!

I speak English, Irish and German. I dont know if I wanna learn any more....it'll probably just confuse me too much. :laugh2:

I did Spanish and German GCSE and got A* in both...also got a B in Latin.

Now I am doing Spanish and German for A Level and I am almost certainly going to do one at university.

I also know the odd word in many languages...mainly Icelandic thanks to Sigur Ros!

yes! Icelandic! that's nice :wideeyed:

^ Íslenska :surprised:

Btw, learning a language is an amazing way to get into a culture and its people, that's why I'd like to learn many other languages, if I just had the time for it... good luck for whichever you choose! btw, I also had to choose one language to learn for college and I chose German. I start next week. :P
