It's Not the End of the World as We Know It! R.E.M. Returns

WEBREM1-cmyk-fx.jpg

The world has been bereft of dependable, bigger-than-Jesus rock bands lately. Coldplay is still in training and Radiohead has gone down the rabbit hole of its studio, leaving us with a certain Irish band and their American counterparts. But unlike U2, R.E.M. has had an uneven track record the last few years, and today when we the faithful learn of an imminent Michael Stipe & Co. release, it's cause for a touch of nervousness.

For decades, we've weathered changes in both the band's dynamic and sound while continuing to stand by them. But after the royal disappointment of their last album, Around the Sun, even the most dedicated began to voice concern and doubt about Athens' favorite sons.

Three years later, we find R.E.M. hungry and working hard to prove that they not only still have it, but in fact never lost it. Live footage of alarmingly rocking and focused new material is flooding YouTube, indicating that the next record could be the big one we've been waiting for. In the meantime, this fall sees the release of the live CD/DVD set recorded in Dublin on their last tour, R.E.M. Live. Here, guitarist Peter Buck explains their live mentality, where they're going on the new record, and why he's so excited for us to hear it.

The Live DVD is very kinetic. How did it come about?

The band was playing really well and the songs from the last record took on a new life when played live, so we wanted to make a DVD that was splashy and vibrant, to give it the feel of a live rock show. It pretty much is the true experience. There are no overdubs. We're a good live band and the idea was to capture that.

I feel like a lot of bands don't have a live show. They haven't earned it; they haven't lived in a van.

I hate to sound like a Civil War soldier, but the way you get good at something is to do it. I can't tell you how many bands I've seen that made a good demo, found a manager, made a pretty good record and suddenly they're doing a live show. We were a great live band before we even made records. The way we made our living was to play for $3 a head on a Tuesday night in whatever town and getting 100 people to come, and the next week there'd be 150. We worked really hard and became really good at it.

It's great that you didn't do five of the same shows in a row in Dublin.

We didn't want to play songs we play a lot. The irony was that we were playing new songs that we weren't rehearsing, but we were spending two hours at soundcheck working on songs we haven't played since Reagan was in office. In the process, we rediscovered them.

The Dublin performances were online 20 minutes after the shows ended. How do you feel about YouTube?

I like YouTube. I like the idea that everything we've ever done is floating in cyberspace. We thought about taking all the thousands of hours of recordings and just making a channel--all the videos, T.V. shows, interviews. This is a good moment for us to show where the band is live and lead into the new album in the spring.

The mindset for this next record was, "Look, we're a great live band, why can't we capture that in the studio? Let's spend less time in the studio and go in better prepared, do a couple takes and it'll be great." And it's worked. Everyone is having a good time. I haven't been this excited about a record in 15 years. It's a record that our fans are going to really like.

You still seem hungry. I'm a longtime fan, and when Around the Sun came out...well, we sort of broke up for a bit. But I love that you guys didn't just ignore everyone and move forward thinking everything was OK.

Honestly, I had problems with that album the day we finished it. We had gotten into some bad work habits, taking forever and not trusting our instincts. I felt it isn't who we are as a band and as people. We were working in a way that didn't play to our strengths. We've never had a record that had bad songs on it. We don't write bad songs, but the production and dithering kind of got in the way. I told everyone to trust themselves. Your first thought is always the best.

There aren't many people that are as good at this as we are. Instead of booking six months in a studio, we booked two or three weeks. Right now we have a record that if it came out today, I'd be really happy. It's a record that we wanted to make. I don't know how people sell records nowadays. That's not my concern. My concern is to make a record that revitalizes the band. I have to think that whoever has liked us over the years will hear it and be excited.

wooho,i already saw some of the dublin gig videos and its going to be great dvd

Whadda ya mean, "ït's going to be"?

It's been out for months ;)

De CD/DVD is simply called R.E.M. Live. You can buy it just about everywhere.

Michael Stipe's lyrics really interest me. I can't think of any examples right now as I'm still sleepy but they're very poetic and I allow the listener to intepret them any way they like.

Soooooo... how about that new album then? :)

For a second I thought it was going to be a video with him moaning at the so-called fans downloading the album early

Hehehe.

Well, there's no reason to do that because most fans are raving over the new album.

And damn right too.

Best album of the year so far.

I'm waiting for it to come out in stores before I buy it.
