Greatest rock song ever?

It's overrated, yes, but not nearly as much as Bohemian Rhapsody.

Yeah' date=' and a lot of shit about a toolshed. LMFAO It's definately there, I've listened to it every which way and yes. It is there. As for the meaning of it, well, Jimmy Page did dabble quite publicly in the "dark arts", and occultism. Kind of creepy....[/quote']

the toolshed is mentioned as well as the satanic messages and I think it is currently, maybe only in the past, but Jimmy Page lived in a house called the toolshed where a very satanic man used to live or somethin like that.

Rock around the clock- Bill hailey and the comets

^so far the oldest one of that list, which for that i would be the one i would vote for.

Bohemian Rhapsody-Queen

^is an anthem of a whole generation.

Sunshine of your love- Cream

^sorry, my bad but i haven't listened that one. :embarassed:

Stayin alive- The Bee Gees

^Are you sure that is a rock song?

Stairway to heaven- Led Zeppelin

^LZep are a classic rock band, i would vote for that one too, but as i've said with the first band, the oldest is the best. ;)

this thread is missing a lot of great possibly answers.

a day in the life- beatles

I was thinking that one, too.

Also, Baba O'Riley - The Who

But my choice is on here ----> Stairway to Heaven - Led Zeppelin

bee gees? rock?

and of course stairway to heaven

how are the Bee Gees even in this category? And this poll just reminds me of every single list that Rolling Stone mag always comes up with. If you must insist though, I'd have to say "A Day in the Life", because without it there would be no Bohemian Rhapsody or Stairway.

But excluding the Beatles, since they should trump this list, I'd probably give these some honorable mentions:

Baba O'Riley - The Who

Layla - Derek and the Dominoes

Johnny B Goode - Chuck Berry

Walk This Way - Aerosmith

Black Sabbath - War Pig

Boston - Foreplay/Long Time

U2 - Where the Streets Have No Name

Elton John - Funeral For A Friend

Mott the Hoople - All the Young Dudes

Metallica - Master the Puppets

Peter Frampton - Do You Feel Like We Do

Phil Collins - In the Air Tonight

... and if we REALLY wanna stretch it, I always say that "Supper's Ready" by Genesis is the greatest song EVER written by a rock band.... pure masterpiece and genius!

This person's avi looks just like rudy's. :P

I voted Bohemian Rhapsody, most of the songs on there aren't that great.

bohemian rhapsody!

the greatest song i've ever heard!

Yeah, but you can't do that...because then you have to say that the Beach Boys' "Pet Sounds" is the greatest. Without Pet Sounds, there is no Sgt. Peppers. It's a slippery slope.

fair argument, but I really don't like it when people compare "Pet Sounds" and "Sgt. Peppers". What the Beatles did on Sgt Peppers was so innovative and original; it cannot be compared. But going on that slippery slope argument, you could also say that without Revolver there would be no Pet Sounds

That's absolutely correct about Revolver (or at least from what I've read...I wasn't around then). :) The reason for the comparisons are 1) they were contemporaries of each other, 2) several music lists rank both albums in the top 5 of all time, and 3) the interplay of influences. It's only natural to compare.

I actually prefer Pet Sounds to Sgt. Peppers. A Day in the Life is amazing, but the rest of the album does not do it for me. There are many other Beatles albums that I prefer (such as Rubber Soul). Even if they are not as innovative, I just like the vibe better.

I also happen to think Brian Wilson is a genius, and I know Paul McCartney is on board with that one. As long as we are listing the greatest classic rock songs, we mind as well throw Good Vibrations and Wouldn't It Be Nice into the mix. Brian's ability to arrange music is top notch, and no group harmonizes better than the Beach Boys. They are so under appreciated, but I am sure that will change once he passes away and people start to reflect back. Just my two cents.

for me, it's been this for a long while:

[ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zQFuNHCMF2Y]YouTube - David Bowie - Heroes[/ame]

i was undecided between Bohemian Rhapsody and Stairway to Heaven

Fuck,where is Viva?

This thread was made in 2006 ;)

i like that you had Cream, but Layla is tops for me, and are not the Beatles considered rock or not? this is very subjective

I don't know 2 so I voted Queen

Stairway to Heaven might be the most overrated song of all time. Don't get me wrong, its a good song, but in no way does it deserve the ridiculous pedestal people put it on.

It`s easy: Stairway to Heaven is the greatest rock song ever! (the second one is Smells Like Teen Spirit, but it isn`t in your list :D)
