"to swim against the stream"

Featured Replies

Do you do it?

In purpose?Or not?

Do you want to do it?

Or do you only the things you like whether they are popular or not?

I think i do......and I like the things i do....I often have such a different view about things than the majority of the people here in our village and area!Or like my friends....I like being different...yeah i do!

But I don't live for being different.....

Its not important to me in any way.

Society is basically seperated into 50% of people being 'the same' as others, and the other 50% trying to be different.

Its funny how the one's trying to be different and really caring about it, dont realise how they are just the same as the people they think are opposite to them. At the end of the day its changing yourself to suit what other people are doing, and thats pretty sad.

Someone said I'm a unique person just last night actually, it was nice to hear but I dont dwell on whether its relevant or not.

I'm not proud of it, but maybe I do.Actually, I don't really care, I just say and do what I think is right, but somehow in my school, for example, I'm always the onliest person with such opinion. It's like people have a deal to answer all my questions:no.Everything I say is wrong, I don't know why.Maybe they're stupid, maybe I am, maybe we all are.But sometimes it's funny to be such a rebel. Not for being a special, just to watch people's reaction.

I finally awhile back resigned myself to the fact that I would never in any way, shape, or form be cool- either by fitting in or being different. I can't do either properly.

I just try to go with what works for who I am though mainstream or otherwise, and to never lose my sense of wonder. Because in the end, what's the point in fitting into any category if you've lost that?

i'm not doing it on purpose.

i just do what i think is right and a lot of people around me are just too stupid to see what is right.

How many other british 21 year olds do you know who don't smoke, don't do drugs, still a virgin and doesn't get pissed up every weekend for a laugh?

I rest my (brief) case that I swim against the stream.

Nice (old) thread Jules

I actually enjoyed this post a lot. Very interesting and I agree. I don't do things because society wants me to, but i don't do things just to do things differently. I do what i feel is right, and if that is the same or different, so be it

Well David, I'm not an expert on British culture (though I do watch quite a number of British comedy shows)! Who am I to judge!:P (as though American "culture" were all that different..);) Glad you've chosen a healthier path in life, David!

I would say that we're all a complex combination of circumstances, and we can either choose to fit into a group, thereby giving up some individuality but gaining a sense of place within some secure social framework, or we can choose to be more individualistic, and gain friends by mutual commonalities gained independently in separate circumstances. Or, we can choose to go it alone, and live as hermits in our own hermit kingdoms!:elf:

Basically, we have many facets, and many sides of our personalities to explore, either independently, or together. Some times we are within a group, and at others, we are on our own. Sometimes we become groups by our very exclusion from a given group. But whatever path you choose, or whatever path life chooses for you, it is the path you take, for the path is more a description of the turn of events and the frames of mind, than simply a time-line through the walk of life.

Whatever choice, keep dreaming, & never loose the joy of discovery and the joy of sharing..:sunny:

^^All your posts sound like an excerpt from a book, I love them! :D

Ehhh fuck the world--I do what I want!! *jumps up and down Rocky-style* :D

haha my old thread I've just seen it now that you bumped it Dave....

my view has changed a bit....since I've moved out I found people who are rather like me....so I'm not really against the stream (when I'm with my friends...) anymore...and I like the way I am....because of the people who are with me...

I just do what I do.

I don't really ever know when I'm going against the stream or whatever, I just do things because I want to.

Sometimes I do it on purpose, I admit, like when I changed my clothing style. I did that to be different because I was tired of being ignored. I needed a little bit of attention. It's hard to explain.

But I like what I like because I like it, not because it's different.

I'll admit something else. I mostly think the way I think because I need to be different so I can keep remembering that I can't be like all the kids in my town who are going to stay in Keyser forever. I have to keep thinking differently or I'll get sucked into the town. That's also hard to explain.

Ok Dave...I am not british and not 21...but I am german and 20 I don't smoke (ok the last weeks I did every now and then), I don't really do drugs (ok except alcohol), I am still a virgin, hmmm adn this thing with the laugh...I think I can't underline that...

i think he's right, especially about the getting dunk part.

i don't know, i'm not trying to be different. i do think i am though, it's probably unavoidable if you're foreign. many people here especially girls look so similar. they're wearing the same clothes and hairstyle. i'm not sure if it's just a liverpool thing but it's certainly something i don't know from my country.

Sally, something's similar is going on in Ljubljana. There are four major types of girls and two of them are yucky.
