Reilly
EDIT/BUMP: Gotye's so successful in Australia now, he has an animated video on Youtube and everything! Woweewawa! But this at least means you can just click on the youtube links below instead of having to download the files I uploaded before (Which virtually nobody did). Give it a go! --------------- Gotye (pronounced "gore-tee-yay"). Gotye is a bloke from Melbourne, Australia named Wally De Barker who has spent the last two years buying $2 records from Op Shops in the hope of eventually finding enough "perfect" samples to record his sophomore album. "Like Drawing Blood" has been a long time in the works, and after apparently two critical computer crashes that lead to the loss of everything, it's finally been released for MY listening pleasure. Layered with weird sounds, melodies and samples, this really is one of those freakishly amazing albums. As you can imagine, building an entire record on samples from old records with "the funniest covers" can only lead to a seriously warped journey. But for all it's said warpedness, "Like Drawing Blood" is EXCELLENT. I actually purchased the album off Gotye's website with his debut for next to nothing (y'all should too) and I received an email from the bloke in person saying that he really appreciated my support and that due to recent demand I was actually getting the LAST copy of "Like Drawing Blood" before more pressings were due a few weeks later. It was kinda cool. Anyway, it's impossible to put this bloke in any kind of box, as every song songs remarkably different. I will quote a Brisbane street press mag though and say that "Wally is unquestionably one of this nation's most supreme talents". Learnalilgivinanlovin: [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qkONn8tadp4]YouTube- Gotye - Learnalilgivinanlovin[/ame] Supremely catchy, short and incredibly sweet. Its clever and clear music, perfect for the first listen of Gotye. Hearts a Mess: [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rvbSiQZfACQ]YouTube- Gotye - Hearts A Mess[/ame] This cuts deep into the core of you. Its dark, has a feeling of sadness like he is just giving up hope. It gets more and more emotional as it goes along, its quite long, and absolutely fantastic. kekita
Witness the Awesomeness that is Goyte! Wow so going to this!!!!!!!!!!! just heard it on the radio here some excerpts from his myspace site: 'Gotye's album Like Drawing Blood has captured the attention of music lovers across Australia since its release last May. Patiently pieced together in bedrooms around Melbourne over the course of two and a half years, unique alt-pop-electronic sensibility was as intensifying as the genre-hopping experiments of 2004's critically lauded debut Boardface.' This July and August, Lunatic Entertainment is proud to present the first Gotye national tour. Having performed just five times since the Gotye project started in 2004, this extraordinary show, built around a 9-piece mini-orchestra and compelling live visual element, is set to be one of the most anticipated Australian tours of the year. Joining Gotye for this very special tour is the wonderfully unique Mountains in the Sky. Tickets on sale Friday May 18 from 9am. For more information go to http://www.gotye.com anyone else into his music? check him out here http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=46493413

StarsKay
Didn't realise he has been around this long! Only heard of him from his Somebody that I used to know song. :P Haha, the same stands for me. I recall hearing some of his stuff but it was in the midst of me diving deep into the works of Coldplay and subsequently got pushed aside. I'm happy to see Gotye has stuck with it and continued to produce some great sounds. I can now (finally) take time to appreciate it. For Australian fans, Gotye topped this years Triple J's Hottest 100 countdown. He's no stranger to the Hottest 100, having landed songs in the 2010 and 2006 lists, as well as snagging spots in 2009's Hottest 100 of All Time and last year's Hottest 100 Australian Albums of All Time. Still, 2011 was the biggest year yet for Gotye - who we're now calling Our Wally - and the year in which the world finally woke up to his talents. And the track that made it all happen was 'Somebody That I Used To Know' - a behemoth of a tune that came close to not happening at all. "This song took a long time to come together," Wally De Backer told Richard Kingsmill. "I'm no stranger to taking long times to finish some songs; I mean, 'Hearts A Mess' seemed to sit around for, off and on, two years. But it didn't feel as laborious, somehow, or as much of a challenge as this. 'Somebody That I Used To Know' felt much, much closer to the too hard basket a lot of the time and felt very close to me going, 'No, I can't actually listen to this song any more.'" It's no stretch to say that a huge reason why 'Somebody That I Used To Know' has resonated with so many people around the world is its achingly personal insights into the end of a relationship. You could be forgiven for thinking it's non-fiction, but as Wally explained triple j, that's a common misconception. "People ask me whether it's based upon an actual relationship, an actual break-up and it's not really. It's kind of an amalgam of lots of relationships and experiences I've had in my life, and certain elements of fiction all kind of edited and rolled into one." Since blowing up internationally, the tune's been a popular subject of cover versions: from Eskimo Joe, to The Big Pink, to these Canadians who played the whole thing on a single guitar. Also, Tom and Alex dressed up like the video at the ARIAs. 'Somebody That I Used To Know' isn't the first song Gotye's landed in this Hottest 100 - his superb Making Mirrors albums has given us our #87 song ('In Your Light') and #34 ('I Feel Better'), but it is the last. At #1 - YOUR hottest track of 2011 - the international phenomenon, 'Somebody That I Used To Know'.
