it's a shame they don't show these games on "free TV" anymore.....

yeah it is :(

i'm lucky, because here in SUI we at least get Champions League matches twice a week (mainly the same games in 3 different languages :D)

you know....at least I wanted to watch Bayern-Real yesterday....because they were making a bit of a big thing of it....because both teams are said to be in a "crisis"....but yes yes.....it's all about the money...

Liverpool are so lucky. Holy crap its unfair :( Still, with Deco playing the way he is tonight, I'm confident we can win.

i predicted 3-1 before the match, it still can happen :smug2:

visca el Barca!!!

The people on sky sports news didn't like the way Deco waved pretend cards for whatitface.

Meanwhile in more "Down to earth" football, the Southern Final of the Johnstone's Paint Trophy at half-time is 0-0 between Bristol Rovers and Bristol City.

Horrible performance from us. We applied five minutes of pressure and then just gave up. Atrocious defending, toothless attacking.

Sigh

Barcelona 1-2 Liverpool

Craig Bellamy and John Arne Riise both scored as Liverpool beat holders Barcelona at the Nou Camp in the first leg of their Champions League tie.

Deco nodded Barca in front from Gianluca Zambrotta's precise cross.

But Liverpool dug in and they levelled when Barca keeper Victor Valdes let Bellamy's header creep over the line.

Barca poured men forward but the Reds took the lead when Bellamy teed up Riise to fire home and they held on to win despite seeing Deco hit the post.

The pre-match headlines had been all about an alleged training camp fracas between Bellamy and Riise - but both were in Liverpool's starting line-up and did not take long to link up as the Reds made a confident start to the game.

Inside the first four minutes Steven Gerrard released Riise and his driven cross from the left was only just too strong for the Welshman.

But an attacking Barca line-up - with Javier Saviola flanked up front by Ronaldinho and Lionel Messi - did not take long to get into their stride.

Saviola had already been harshly called offside after breaking clear when Deco had a dangerous shot blocked by Jamie Carragher.

So it was no real surprise when the home side took the lead on 14 minutes.

Zambrotta escaped Gerrard on the left and, with Risse napping, his cross found Deco on his own at the far post to score with a bullet header.

It almost got worse for Rafa Benitez's side as Barcelona looked to press home their advantage.

The Reds had no answer to the home side's quick incisive passing that gave them two more chances in quick succession.

First Saviola shot wide after getting past Carragher, then Jose Reina had to make a good low save to deny Deco after he had ghosted on to Messi's through ball.

But Liverpool rode the storm and two minutes before half-time they were handed an unlikely route back into the game.

Much has been made of Barca's recent defensive vulnerability and it reared its head again here, thanks to a disastrous mistake by goalkeeper Victor Valdes'

Bellamy had already escaped the Barcelona defence once to nod Gerrard's free-kick against the side-netting and he was soon at it again.

The Wales striker was all on his own to meet Xabi Alonso's cross and, although Valdes caught the ball, he carried it over the line before pushing it back out.

Dirk Kuyt followed up to make absolutely sure of the equaliser but it was not a surprise to see Bellamy claim the goal after his turbulent week - and he celebrated it with a golf swing.

Frank Rijkaard's side seemed to run out of ideas and in the absence of any clear gameplan, settled for sending more men forward.

That played into Liverpool's hands and another Valdes error gave them their first chance of the half when he picked up a back-pass with 20 minutes left.

The keeper saved Alonso's shot with his feet but was glad to see Kuyt head over when the midfielder swiftly sent over an inviting cross.

But Benitez did not have to wait long to see his side take the lead.

Reina saved well from Saviola and when Liverpool came forward again, Valdes saved from Kuyt but the ball fell for Bellamy who fed Riiise to sweep the ball home.

There was still time for Deco to send a free-kick curling against the post with Reina beaten but Liverpool held on for a famous victory.

FC Porto 1-1 Chelsea

_42599563_sheva270.jpg_42599501_terry2203.jpg

Chelsea recovered from the loss of an early goal and an injury to John Terry to seal a valuable draw in Porto thanks to Andriy Shevchenko's fine strike.

Terry had to go off after injuring his ankle just seven minutes into the Champions League tie, and things got worse when Raul Meireles volleyed in.

Shevchenko levelled six minutes later, though, firing low into the corner, while Didier Drogba hit a post late on.

Porto's Ricardo Quaresma also struck a post, but neither side found a winner.

The last 16, first-leg clash got off to the worst possible start for Chelsea when influential skipper Terry went over on his right ankle, the same ankle he injured in training on Tuesday, and could not continue.

And, to make matters worse, as the defender was being stretchered off behind the goal, Meireles latched onto Claude Makelele's poor header to lash into the corner on the volley, via a deflection off Frank Lampard.

That goal prompted a change from Jose Mourinho with Arjen Robben - and not Mikel Jon Obi as was planned seconds earlier - replacing Terry, and it paid immediate dividends.

On 16 minutes, the Dutchman surged at the Porto defence and slipped in Shevchenko, who fired low into the far corner with aplomb.

Chelsea's recovery could have been even better had Didier Drogba not headed over unmarked from Frank Lampard's long free-kick.

But, in truth, it was Porto that edged an eventful opening half, with Petr Cech brilliantly denying Lisandro Lopez and Ricardo Quaresma twice going close - the second time striking the bar with a delightful effort with the outside of his boot.

Such was the winger's growing influence that Mourinho brought off Robben at half-time to be replaced by Mikel, who was tasked with man-marking the 23-year-old.

Strangely, Porto also decided to opt for safety first, with defender Marek Cech replacing goalscorer Meireles and, as a result, the second half failed to live up to the quality of the first.

Still, though, Ricardo Carvalho had to be at his brightest to clear Bruno Moraes's dangerous cross on 68 minutes, while Adriano looked odds-on to score five minutes from time only to be denied by the linesman's flag.

The Blues almost snatched victory themselves with 11 minutes remaining when Drogba, ineffectual up to that point, fired past keeper Helton only for his effort to cannon off the post from the angle.

However, Chelsea comfortably saw out the game in the end with bookings for Cech, Michael Essien, Michael Ballack and Makelele marring an otherwise satisfactory night's work.

woah I did not see that coming! :stunned: they way barca started I thought Liverpool would be trashed..

funny that the goalscorers were the ones involved in the mess in Portugal

Congrats to Liverpool, did what needed to be done and got the result. We were outclassed tactically and physically.

I'd like to sound optimistic and say something positive like bring on the second leg, but I honestly don't see us coming back from this :disappointed:

there's no motivation left in players i'm afraid... Franky must change something. his system's getting old. WE HAVE TO TRY OUT NEW THINGS! otherwise, au revoir Rijkaard!!

bring back Ten Cate!!!

what an awsome result!

i thought it might be difficult for liverpool, didnt expect them to win the away game tbh. two away goals, i'm looking forward to the second leg at anfield now!

You have to score at least 2 goals at Anfield to go forward, and Liverpool at Anfield are a tough team to beat (unless your name is Arsenal). But really, I didn't see a liverpool victory coming.

yes. it was an amazing match. good on liverpool for winning, barca played terrible though, with eto'o out their forwards looked terrible and had no drive forward.

I also watched Barcelona - Liverpool! Awesome match! Didn't expect that Liverpool would win if I'm honest.

But why do people especially in Spain often have the appetence to spit at players??? It's absolutely disgusting, especially when security men are acting like this. You could watch it while Steven Gerrard tried to kick a corner.

Well, can't wait to watch Ajax-Werder this evening! :nice: Who decided to kick-off at 9pm?! It's too late...

Lille appeal Uefa goal decision

Lille have appealed against Uefa's decision to turn down their protest about Ryan Giggs' goal last week.

Manchester United secured a 1-0 win in France in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League last 16 encounter courtesy of Giggs' controversial free-kick.

Claude Puel's players were unhappy that the winger had taken the set-piece quickly and protested to Uefa about the validity of the goal.

On Friday, European football's governing body rejected Lille's protest, issuing a statement to clarify their reasons.

"Having examined the official referee's report, the television evidence at hand as well as the Laws of the Game, the Uefa Control and Disciplinary Body decided to reject the protest, as there was no proof of a technical error," read the statement.

"As a result, the body declared that the goal was perfectly valid."

But Lille were shocked by Uefa's decision and have now lodged an appeal ahead of the deadline later on Monday.

Uefa confirmed Lille's appeal and its Appeals Body will consider the matter on Friday.

Lille president Michel Seydoux has outlined why he feels the club have no option but to launch an appeal.

Seydoux told Reuters: "Those who have watched the match know why we are appealing the decision.

"This case must be examined thoroughly and Uefa have to do it. It must be known that the referee influenced the outcome of this game. We had to appeal for moral reasons.

"It is necessary to go all the way in this case and we will go all the way. Our cause is not the cause of Lille against another club or against Uefa, it is a battle by Lille...for all the other clubs, to make sure this never happens again."

Hahaha, that's the revenge of the supporters...

Due to a lot of criticism in regard to the power of Premiere (pay-tv), Sat.1 (free-to-air) just bought the rights to broadcast Bayern Munich-Real Madrid live on Wednesday March 7th. On Tuesday DSF (free-tv) will show all games simultaneously.

Pay-tv has absolutely no chance here! What a great decision! :nice: I think Champions League must be available for all people.

Haha, today I watched this one on Premiere...

The threat remains real... What a pun! :dozey:  The whole media are already focussed to that match. The official reason why this game is also going to be broadcast in fre-tv is... it's a "national affair"! :stunned:

One of the good things at being a sky sports subscriber is that I can watch all the games online for free
