The comments were made at a High Court hearing in Leeds, where the club's plans to exit administration are being challenged by HM Revenue & Customs. KPMG said that unless the club is able to leave administration, the Football League may not let it start the season. BBC Radio Leeds understands the Football League is as yet undecided. July 28, 200719 yr Author Pompey win Asia Trophy By Peter Fraser - Created on 27 Jul 2007 Penalty failures from new Liverpool signings Fernando Torres and Yossi Benayoun gave Portsmouth victory in the Asia Trophy final. With the sides goalless after 90 minutes penalties were required to decide a winner and, after Torres and Benayoun both had their penalties saved by Portsmouth goalkeeper David James, it was left to Niko Kranjcar to successfully convert to allow Pompey to lift the trophy. It was Liverpool, driven by a ferocious Momo Sissoko, who had dominated the game and Portsmouth manager Harry Redknapp was forced to watch on as his side were pinned into their own half. However, the Anfield outfit could not convert chances and possession into goals. Dirk Kuyt wasted a glorious opportunity on 35 minutes when Jermaine Pennant, who will have pleased Reds manager Rafa Benitez with his positive pre-season form, crossed well from the right only for the Dutch striker to head at James in the Pompey goal from close-range. Liverpool were almost severely punished for Kuyt's miss six minutes before half-time when Portsmouth's Gary O'Neil broke the offside trap to meet a Sulley Ali Muntari pass. O'Neil, however, wasted the opportunity by shooting straight at Liverpool goalkeeper Jose Reina when clean through. After the interval Benitez introduced Torres in a bid to give his side the clinical edge they had lacked in the first-half. Liverpool's £20million record signing was not eligible to start the game because he had still not received international clearance from the Spanish Football Association, which had also kept him out of the Reds' 3-1 semi-final victory against South China. However, Premier League chief executive Richard Scudamore had reached an agreement with Redknapp in the Pompey dug-out immediately prior to kick-off, which allowed the Spaniard to be named on the Liverpool bench. Portsmouth, though, were then the closest to breaking the deadlock when Tresor Lomano Lua Lua cut in from the right of the penalty area and deceived Reina with an early effort which rattled the woodwork. Benitez's side continued to boast the share of possession and the Spanish tactician introduced Steven Gerrard, who is not being rushed back from a stomach muscle strain, with five minutes remaining, but penalties were needed. Portsmouth's new striker John Utaka missed first up, but then James produced his two saves from Torres and Benayoun, following successful Liverpool strikes from Gerrard and Kuyt. Matt Taylor, Lua Lua and Hermann Hreidarsson then cooly dispatched their kicks and it was left to Kranjcar to hand Portsmouth a 4-2 penalty win.

July 30, 200719 yr Tevez dispute close to settlement Tevez is desperate to move to Old Trafford The dispute over the future of Carlos Tevez may be decided out-of-court in the next couple of days, sources close to West Ham told BBC Sport. The player's representative Kia Joorabchian issued a writ to West Ham in an attempt to secure his proposed £30m move to Manchester United. But with no date set for a high court hearing it is thought that both parties could come to an agreement. Joorabchian's companies claim they own the economic rights to the 23-year-old. BBC Sport's football reporter Nigel Adderley said: "The difference in the amount of compensation each side believes would be fair could still leave Tevez in limbo at the start of the season. "The player's advisors MSI have indicated they're only prepared to pay West Ham £100,000 - as was agreed in the original contract which the club then ripped up at the Premier League's insistence to end the third-party ownership of Tevez and allow him to carry on playing last season. "But the club believe they're entitled to far more to release his registration which would allow him to move to Manchester United. "Plenty of compromise could lead to a speedy outcome but if it does end up in court, the striker could be sidelined for several months." Tevez's transfer to the Premier League champions has stalled over who will be paid the £30m transfer fee. Third-party ownership of football players is common in South America but was almost unheard of in England until West Ham signed Tevez and fellow Argentine Javier Mascherano, who has since moved to Liverpool, in August 2006. West Ham ripped up an agreement they had with Joorabchian - which broke Premier League rules - and they now claim any deal with United can only go ahead with their say-so. The Football Association and the Premier League had asked Fifa to rule on the matter, but the world governing body recommended it should go to the Court of Arbitration for Sport. West Ham were fined £5.5m in April for breaking Premier League rules over third-party ownership when they signed Tevez. They were allowed to continue playing him after satisfying the Premier League that the third-party agreement with Joorabchian had been torn up. Smith, 26, has agreed a five-year contract and trained with his new team-mates on Friday. Newcastle fought off competition from several clubs to sign Smith, who had been had been told he would not be offered a new deal at Old Trafford. Boss Sam Allardyce is now reported to pondering a last-ditch bid to sign Wigan defender Leighton Baines. Out-of-contract Lyon captain Cacapa, 31, has also had a medical at Newcastle. The Brazilian central defender, who skippered the French champions in each of their last five title-winning seasons, has also discussed personal terms with the club. "He is a top player and we will be delighted if we can pull this off as we regard him as a big capture," manager Sam Allardyce told the Newcastle Chronicle. "Our fans should not be put off by the fact they may not have heard of Cacapa because he has certainly been heard of in Brazil and France." Good news: Leeds hit with 15-point penalty Leeds have received permission to play in League One this season after being granted their Football League share but must do so with a 15-point deduction. The club have appealed against the sanction imposed by the Football League and their case will be heard at a special meeting of all league clubs. Doubts had been raised over Leeds' future after the club failed to agree a Company Voluntary Arrangement (CVA). The Football League accepted there were "exceptional circumstances". :D
