Car crashes into airport building

 

Glasgow Airport has been evacuated following reports that a car has struck the main terminal building and burst into flames.

 

All flights have been suspended following the incident which happened on Saturday afternoon.

 

Eyewitnesses have described a Jeep Cherokee being driven at speed towards the building with flames coming out from underneath.

 

The fire and ambulance service are at the scene along with the police.

A car on fire has been driven at the main terminal building at Glasgow Airport, police have confirmed.

 

Eyewitnesses have described a Jeep Cherokee being driven at speed towards the building with flames coming out from underneath.

 

They have also described seeing two Asian men, one of whom was on fire, who had been in the car.

 

Strathclyde Police said four people had been arrested and detained in connection with the incident.

 

The airport has been evacuated and all flights suspended following the incident at 1515 BST.

 

A Whitehall spokesman said the incident was not being treated as a national security threat.

 

One eyewitness said: "I heard the sound of a car's wheels spinning and smoke coming out.

 

"I saw a Jeep Cherokee apparently as if it was trying to get right through the doors into the terminal building.

 

"There were flames coming out from underneath then some men appeared from in amongst the flames.

 

"The police ran over and the people started fighting with the police. I then heard what sounded like an explosion."

 

Eye-witness Richard Gray told BBC News 24: "A green Jeep was in the middle of the doorway burning.

 

"There was an Asian guy who was pulled out of the car by two police officers, who he was trying to fight off. They've got him on the ground.

 

"The car didn't actually explode. There were a few pops and bangs which presumably was the petrol."

 

Dr Rak Nandwani was at the airport building to pick up relatives when he saw a plume of black smoke.

 

He said: "The whole place has come to a standstill, the terminal building has been evacuated. I have spoken to my relatives and they have been moved to outside the building.

 

"They were told they could not pick their baggage up from the baggage collection area.

 

"There must be about 50 police cars at the airport. Me and my son, along with everyone else, have been moved to the car rental area."

 

Taxi driver Ian Crosby said: "This was no accident. This was a deliberate attack on Glasgow Airport."

 

The reaction of members of the public was not to help the men in the car, but to restrain them, he told the BBC.

 

Mr Crosby, who said he served in Northern Ireland, told how he shepherded people away from the scene in case of a secondary explosion or a nail-bomb.

 

Two men, one of whom was reported to be badly burned, were seen being led away in handcuffs.

I teach at a High School up here & today is the first day of the school holidays. Worried how close to home this is. The coldblooded cynicism and disregard for human life of these people is astonishing. Just as well that they're shite at being terrorists! Fair play to the folks at the airport for nabbing them.

Airport alert 'is terror attack'

An incident in which a car was driven at Glasgow Airport's main terminal and burst into flames is being treated as a terrorist attack by police.

 

Strathclyde Police Chief Constable Willie Rae confirmed the attack was being linked to two car bombs found in London on Friday.

 

He also revealed a suspect taken to the city's Royal Alexandra Hospital was found to have a suspect device on him.

 

Two men were arrested following the attack at 1515 BST.

Not a good week for Prime Minister Gordon Brown.

 

I think you'll find it'll be the best start Gordon Brown could have 'asked' for. Labour support will be the highest in many, many months....if not years. And he now has something he get his teeth into. I'm not buying it.

 

And for ugadawg5 - the news is having a frenzy talking about Al-Qaeda, Religion, Muslims, Bin Laden ( :rolleyes:) about Iraq, and they are even showing side by side pictures with Iraq cars burning on one side and the UK news on the other - BUT, if you listen ever so hard, the news channels say "we have been given no proof of who did this, yet"...SO WHY ARE THEY TALKING AS IF THEY HAVE DETAILS ABOUT WHO DID IT!!??!!

 

It's like, for example, if there was a child murder and then the news just started talking about YOU for hours and hours on end, showing pictures YOU on TV when they don't have any proof of it actually being you. Then everyone just assumes it IS you who committed the crime. Your name is like dirt. People hate you, people want you to kill you and they then find out that it might not have been you. How about that?

 

It's disgusting that we have a media who act in such a way.

 

And that WE have Gordon Brown acting as our saviour, our god - giving speeches saying that people who hate us "for our freedoms".......OUR FREEDOMS?!? The same freedoms that our being are being taken away from us day by day while the government only gains more power over us? It's wrong.

 

And whoever indeed was behind this attack (be it state sponsored *likely*, or be it a couple of idiots who have been brainwashed in thinking they are fighting a just cause) the government will always use it to ratchet up the military style police until we really face a situation that can only be described as 'martial law'.
