Coldplay: 'Our new album has Hispanic theme' (20070725)

Chris Martin and co talk about their new songs

Coldplay have revealed that their new album, currently being recorded by the band in Barcelona, has a "Hispanic theme". Writing on their website blog, the band sent an update from their sessions which have moved from inital recordings in London to Spain.

"The sights, sounds and flavours of Latin America and Spain have definitely been infused on this album. The band visited Argnentina, Chile, Brazil and Mexico earlier this year," they explained. "Chris [Martin] then came up with the idea of recording in Spain. The music and lyrics have begun to reflect the strengthening Hispanic theme."

The band went on to explain that despite the Hispanic theme, there wouldn't be any carnival-style instruments on the album. "No maracas or castanets," they wrote, "but a vibrancy and colourfulness that owes much to the atmosphere of Buenos Aires and Barcelona".

The follow-up to 2005's 'X&Y' is expected sometime in 2008.

Same story but from the BBC:

Coldplay plan 'Hispanic' comeback

British rock group Coldplay have revealed that their new album will have an "Hispanic theme".

A handwritten message on their website says that recording sessions in Spain, and a tour of Latin America earlier this year, have influenced their sound.

"No maracas or castanets," the message said, "but a vibrancy and colourfulness that owes much to the atmosphere of Buenos Aires and Barcelona".

Coldplay's fourth album, the follow-up to 2005's X&Y, is due next year.

The group are among Britain's most successful acts, scoring international hits with songs like Yellow, Clocks and Fix You.

'Friction'

X&Y was the biggest-selling album in the world in 2005, and the band have admitted there has been "tension" in the recording studio as they try to follow it up.

"Tension is an inherent part of recording," a note on the group's website explained.

"Without tension, there's no focus. What is remarkable is that this friction very rarely ignites into flame."

The author, who uses the alias Prospekt, continued to say that the group had recently sat down with producer Brian Eno to review their progress.

"Very little material got an unreserved thumbs up from everyone. However, far from feeling dispirited, we all came out feeling a lot more confident.

"It feels a lot better to check the map and know which direction you're headed and how far you've got to go rather than wander around aimlessly and hope for the best."

Fans widely believe the new album will be titled Prospekt.

the more i hear about this album the more excited and intrigued i'm becoming. in the past 6 months, all the talk of producers, collaborations, album themes and concepts, the odd hint here and there has really got my buzzing for what the guys will release come 2008. i really have no idea as to what to expect now.

 :D

lets hope that does not occur...

so, it's still going to have great classic colplay melodies, piano work, along with a more rocky edge, and now some hispanic influence!? this seems like it's going to be quiet the album indeed.

I'm joking, anyway they're very original to play into the churches...

OH NO LOOK AT THIS PICTURE I FOUND ON COLDPLAY.COM

Coldplay do Hispanic - A Rush Of Paella To The Head?

Can you picture Chris Martin in a flamenco dress, shaking his maracas whilst blaring out ‘Yellow.’ NO? Well you had better get used to it.

Today Coldplay have gone “Hispanic” on us. Yeah that’s right. As you’ll have seen in the news they’ve gone to Barcelona to record the follow-up to 2005’s mighty X&Y and are currently recording “at the feet of archangels.”

We’re not sure whether they were just lacking creativity in their London studio or they just fancied escaping the flooded British Isles to find a bit of sun but it sure is an intriguing prospect.

What on earth will the album sound like? Will a collaboration with Enrique Iglesias or even Penelope Cruz, or both, be on the cards?

The album and song tiles have got me puzzled though. My current favourite is ‘A Rush Of Paella To The Head?

What do you think a Hispanic Coldplay album will sound like? We hope somthing like this...

Coldplay: ‘Let’s Get Hispanic’

celebrity_haiku_corner_coldplay.jpg

Experts have determined that there's only one thing more annoying than Chris Martin from Coldplay, and that's Chris Martin from Coldplay dancing the flamenco in a giant sombrero while bibbling about on a zambomba.

And guess what - that's exactly what Chris Martin from Coldplay plans to do in the horrifyingly near future. Despite making his usual promises that Coldplay would split up after X&Y was released, it seems that Coldplay have been secretly putting a new album together; and according to Chris Martin the new album is going to be 'Hispanic'. But the bad news - that Coldplay are probably going to start releasing songs called things like Bullfighting? Ole! and Vieja Prostitute Melenuda (Of My Heart) - is balanced out by two pieces of good news: 1) By the sound of things, even Coldplay don't like their Hispanic new direction and 2) the Coldplay Hispanic album isn't released until next year, so you've still got plenty of time to hide.

It's been a while since Coldplay went into hibernation after X&Y became the world's biggest-selling album of 2005, but the downtime has been good to the band. Without a new album to promote, the band have been able to get back to being normal people again, doing unshowy, non-rockstar things like naming their children after biblical figures and calling in horn-wielding Kabbalah rabbis to exorcise their houses. But two years of living with moany old Gwyneth Paltrow has done Chris Martin's head in to such an extent that he's reconvened Coldplay to record a new album that will regain their 'new Beatles' crown.

Only they've reconvened in Spain. And the album apparently now sounds 'Hispanic'. Dear God. BBC News reports:

British rock group Coldplay have revealed that their new album will have an "Hispanic theme". A handwritten message on their website says that recording sessions in Spain, and a tour of Latin America earlier this year, have influenced their sound. "No maracas or castanets," the message said, "but a vibrancy and colourfulness that owes much to the atmosphere of Buenos Aires and Barcelona"… The author, who uses the alias Prospekt, continued to say that the group had recently sat down with producer Brian Eno to review their progress. "Very little material got an unreserved thumbs up from everyone. However, far from feeling dispirited, we all came out feeling a lot more confident."

Of course, it goes without saying that the pressure on Coldplay to produce a world-beating album must be incredible. Not only would a mega-smash comeback stop the whispers of Coldplay splitting up, but it'd also stop Coldplay themselves thinking they're rubbish. Plus Gwyneth Paltrow wouldn't be the most famous singer in her marriage either which, to be honest, we'd be somewhat grateful for.

But a Hispanic Coldplay album? Really? Hispanic music is all about fire and passion and warmth and drama. Coldplay sing songs about clocks and scientists. Unless we're wrong here, this sounds an awful lot like it's going to be 2-0 to the Crazy Frog here.

Oh, this sounds really cool. I am glad they are recording in Barcelona. It would be cool if they incorporated some spanish style guitar in there. Paco de Lucia is great! He is a spanish style guitarrist. I liked reading that they are traveling simple with just accoustics and vocals. I hope that there is still some piano on the next album as well. I just hope the next album sounds lighter on the whole and that they don't record music just for playing in stadiums. They have the talent so I know they can do it!

Ian...wow.

I just about lost it at that...
