Does Radiohead deserve the rave reviews?

Featured Replies

Well it seems I can't find a bad review of In Rainbows anywhere. Does the new album deserve all the critical acclaim?

I think it does.

Anyway, I've found some not so good review in a French paper. Something saying it was in the same vein as HTTT, not very innovating. About innovation, I think ther is actually not much of it, but In Rainbows has definitely nothing to do with HTTT !

But, again, I think it does.

Its ok.

I dunno, I like Radiohead and all, but its just not me is all.

I like, I don't love is all.

I don't necessarily mean there aren't any bad reviews, but it seems like a smash with the critics right now. Metacritic.com, for instance, compiles lists of reviews for albums and right now (after 22 listed reviews) In Rainbows has an average score of 88 (out of 100).

I think it deserved the rave reviews because:

a) It might not be as innovative as the others, but it is a catchy accessible "pretty" album.

b) It came out in 10 days time! Talk about suprises!

c) We were given the option to choose what we wanted to pay.

d)"Jigsaw Falls Into Place" and "15 Step". Do I need to say more?

e)Its Radiohead, could they ever release something disappointing?!?

Just posting the link to Metacritic...

there's also some Album of the Year talk floating around already...I wonder which song will be the hit from this album?

There are quite a bunch of good candidates on the album.

15 Step, Bodysnatchers, Nude and Jigsaw... for starters.

Weird Fishes/Arpeggi and All I Need are also strong contenders, though I'm not sure these should be released as singles.

But.... I have strong doubts about singles getting released for In Rainbows.

There should be, but I'm not sure if there is even more recorded/mixed material left.

I sure hope that the (possible) b-sides will be better than those from Hail To The Thief. Most of those were quite poor, especially the 2+2=5 b-sides (with the exception of Fog (Again)).

even people on their msgboard think well some of them claim the album is horrible

what? I think you need to use some punctuation in that sentence:)

I think Gagging Order and Where Bluebirds Fly are good, as well as I Will (LA Version), but of course, coming behind the Amnesiac ones, the HTTT B-Sides seem rather poor.

since the album's already been released, isn't it too late to have singles? I thought singles usually came out before the album did

Well, surely, as soon as they sign a record deal... especially when involved with a major... the release of singles will be discussed. After all, albums need some kind of promotion.

I don't mind if they agree NOT to release any singles, but I'd like to see a video or two. Should be interesting...

I wasn't aware Radiohead was interested in signing to a label. Surely they wouldn't have stuck it to their former label like this if they were planning on signing up again

They have already announced they will. As a matter of fact, a deal was supposed to be set THIS WEEK according to their management. I'm pretty sure it's a one-album deal though, for distribution of In Rainbows only which should be released at the start of 2008. As soon as the album's available in the shops, one or two singles could get released.

Plus, since the world tour probably won't start until May 2008 (source: NME) they have plenty of time to shoot videos accompanying possible singles.

oh that's cool. I would like to see some vids too and it would be interesting to see if In Rainbows was eligible for chart status if they have a label. Not that they care about having #1s anymore :laugh3:

I can already picture the Weird Fishes/Arpeggi video in my head...

They shouldn't release any singles as it will spoil the flow of the album.

A Video & Radio only songs released around the time the album will hit the shelves for a general release will be alright.

I shall give the album yet another listen to see if I can find any love in it.

If they did release singles and b-sides I have a feeling that the b-sides would just be those off of the bonus disc...which would kinda suck.

Or other unfinished demos

I still say the retail version of the CD when it comes out next year will either have a bonus track on it or one of the songs in a different manner, just enough to get all the hard-core fans to buy the CD (again)

yeah that makes sense. Or maybe a bonus "Special Edition" with an included DVD or something. Even if they don't have a label they can still pull some great marketing tricks I'm sure :)

Or release the CD in 3 different versions with slightly different artwork.

They know they have idiotic fans who have more money than sense and will buy anything with Radiohead's name on, even if it's for an album where the only differences is the artwork with the band's name on the right instead of the left.

haha yep. Or maybe they'll offer different versions of the cd with all the same songs but in a different order. A must-have for true fans!! :D
