The trouble with Coldplay

Featured Replies

I think most of us agree on that. Eno is trying to push Chris to new lyrical directions, and Chris is trying to improve the quality of them, so I think we'll have some new directions to look forward to. Judging by the titles, it's not all sunshine and roses this time around.

I love Coldplay too, but I'm the first to admit the lyrics need some work. Some are great, but some...errr...not so hot.

i thank you for your support, my furry friend, im from hodiau direkton mb, by the way.

If one more person compares Coldplay to Radiohead, im going to lose it.

OK, there are some similarities, but NO, i disagree with you when you say that coldplay should make an album to be taken seriously.

Um, what do you call the last 3 albums?! They DO, in fact, take their work very seriously, trying to please people like you.

And some people happen to like Chris Martin's sentimental lyrics and their love songs. It's a matter of taste. I don't particularly

Well said. The only similar sound Coldplay had to Radiohead was Parachutes, the very chilled guitar sound thats it. Coldplay have changed there sound sort of on each album. Personally to me I think Radiohead is just one long Parachutes, kind of tiresome after a while not much change.

But anyway good to know someone else has a problem with the Coldplay- Radiohead comparisons.

I also dislike the radiohead comparisons, but I disagree with you on the radiohead comment. If you go from pablo honey to OK computer to Kid A to in rainbows there is an insane world of difference in their sound. More so than any band I know. I originally had trouble adjusting to the bends and O.K during my parachutes obsession days because radiohead's tracks were really guitar heavy and dissonant, when what attracted me to parachutes was the modesty of Jonny's(buckland) electric parts. I think the title tracks on both the bends and parachutes pretty much sum up the respective albums. The coldplay songs that I felt had the biggest radiohead influence were bigger, stronger(kind of taken from the "fitter, happier" motif), such a rush(coldplay's take on the theme of "the tourist"), easy to please(kind of a knock-off of bullet-proof, but it individuates itself nicely), and maybe only superstition, just because of the detailed electric lead.

I never understood the comparison of coldplay and radiohead. They don't sound anything alike to me. Personally, I have more of an emotional attatchment to coldplay than I ever will for radiohead. Radiohead might have better sounding music overall, but for me, coldplay's personal lyrics and sentimental vibe is what makes the band. I think the 4th album will be a lot different, but it will still be coldplay. I'd like to think of them as the new U2 only in the aspect of changing their sound just enough to still have their signature sound. I mean, Pop and Zooropa were a LOT different, but still clearly U2ish. I think this will be Coldplay's strategy.

My two cents - its worth approximately two cents:P:

Coldplay is Coldplay. Coldplay is not Radiohead. Coldplay is not Oasis. Coldplay is not Travis. Coldplay is not the reincarnation of Supertramp. They are Coldplay. Period.

We've all heard Chris say a thousand times that he believes the greatest songs are all around us and that he just waits longer than others for them to fall down on to him. If Chris is writing mostly love themed songs its because that is what is driving him musically. You can't force darkness.

That's it.

^Couldn't agree more. If you don't like Coldplay, just leave them alone.
