Possible solution for downloading guilt

Featured Replies

With the new album coming out, and with all the anticipation of leaks and people debating whether or not to download said leaks and/or album, and the legality of it all, etc... I have come up with a solution for the people who might feel bad about doing so.

If we download the album or leaks - for free- let's make a pledge to ourselves and to each other that we will donate in some way/shape/form to a charity. Whether it be to the charity on this board or Oxfam or the Make Trade Fair campaign - just something to try to make the world a better place.

In the words of Chris Martin - this all sounds kind of hippie - but if every person on the planet thought they could make a difference just imagine the difference we could make.

Who's with me?

:)

That's a great idea. The CCC could use the attention, and alot of the CCC's work is for Oxfam and other charities Coldplay support!

I'm going to download it, but there's no question I'm going to buy it when it's legally available, so I don't feel bad. I downloaded In Rainbows for free, but bought it when it came out as hardcopy...guilt free!:)

I did that with In Rainbows too.... I try to avoid spoilers, but I would have only gave Radiohead $0.50 anyway :laugh3:. I'm defiantly not going to listen to Viva until I get my copy in the mail.... because the Wal-Mart here doesn't carry anything good in the first place

i plan to download the leak if there is one, but i'm also DEFINITELY buying a hard copy and the vinyl release when/if there is one. but i love love love this idea, melanie!! i for one have huge guilt problems, so i would most definitely do that if i wasn't going to get the physical release, and i probably will anyway  i have in the past, at least.

i only paid 1 pound for in rainbows because i wasn't really a huge radiohead fan at that point, and while i did feel bad about it, i didn't really feel the guilt until i fell head-over-heels completely in love with it. then i gladly bought the discbox :D

This is a great idea!

it really really is! :)

I wouldn't feel guilty for downliading it in the first place

Because I'm going to buy it when it hits stores anyways, like, the minute it does.

but there's no harm in listening to it before it's release, get a heads up on it first.

I still think your idea is great though

maybe I'll donate some cash to Fair Trade for the lads.

:)

I won't feel downloading it. I give enough money to the music industry. And if I want to make a donation to a charity I am not just going to do it out of guilt.

^^

right on mate!!

i paid zit for in rainbows but since then ive legally purchased the rest of their discography

Zali from Mali!

YESSSSS! Only $1.36...pretty good price for an album, and a life.;)

If I download it when it leaks and buy it when it comes out, is that alright too?

Whatever you feel comfortable doing is fine. I just know from what some people have said around here that they feel guilty doing it even though it won't stop them.

Giving back is something we should all be doing anyway...and I never said that it had to be a monetary donation..you could give your time to a good cause..just because you have no money doesn't mean you can't help others who are less fortunate than you...and there ARE people out there who are less fortunate.

:)

It's a great idea, btw. Donating someting to help other people is always a brilliant thing to do.

Great idea Melanie. I think if it leaked I'd download one or two tracks and then leave the rest until the album came out. But I like the idea of donating money :)

Now if only there was something to download :bomb:

True enough!! We'd be so lucky to ACTUALLY have this proposed problem!!

There's a good thread about illegal downloading etc on the Keane forum with loads of posts by Amy McDonald (yes, the singer - she used to post regularly on the Keane board). Can't remember what she said, just thought I'd tell you.

As a musician myself, I think downloading music without paying for it is wrong. In fact, downloading one of Coldplay's albums or songs without paying for it, to me, is a moral sin lol. If you really want to donate, wouldn't the best thing to do be to support these guys by buying their album and adding to their musicianship? These guys tour the world and advocate Oxfam and everything. I think simply downloading their music without pay can't possibly be replaced with donating money. Doing both at the same time? Now thats a great combo.

Oh and by the way, im avoiding all leaks of this album as well. I remember opening up my X&Y CD for the first time and listening to it all the way through. It was an incredible experience for me, and im sure it will be for the rest of you. Why waste that?

I know what you're saying,

but having studied music for the best part of my college and uni life,

music business teaches you alot.

Bands only earn up to a single penny per album sold.

they don't earn anything from that,

bands earn money from gigs.

that's why alot of bands don't really care about their fans downloading.

debs wild said on the official coldplay site a while ago before it changed that the band were not concerned with people downliading their music as it is still getting heard by people who will then want to see the live show.

so how about that for your moral dilemma?

Coldplay say - Donwload download download.

jeeze get over its the 21st century...do you think they care if you listen to a leaked song? will they think "oh shit they know its bad now they won't buy it" Tell me how downloading a leaked song is going to affect Coldplay

My curiosity is going to kill me.

That's a great idea Melanie :)

But I'm not going to download the album, I'll wait for it to be released.

I kind of agree about the fact that nowadays many artists dont really mind about people downloading their songs as long as they're listened to..

And as for my curiosity and jealousy towards people who will already have it and make threads about it, well, I wont read any !! I think I wont even come here often till I get it myself, not to get frustrated..
