Mistakes in Violet Hill

Featured Replies

Our town clock strikes a near-perfect E,lol. I'm one of those perfect pitch people and some of my friends want to burn me at the stake, lol.

Thanks for the compliment, Mo!! And yes, I love the lively discussion. This is my favorite VH thread...next to my Vigil thread of course, lol.

I can't sleep a few hours after a gig, so I don't have a pint or 2, I'm up all night. And the social time with a band is just as important as the work time, imo.

ART IS A CHILD !!!!!

LET THE CHILD BE FREE !!!!

WHEN I DRINK A COFEE AND IT TASTES GOOD I DONT SAY ´´OH THE INGREDIENTS ARE NOT PERFECT´´

WHEN I DONT LIKE COFFEE; THEN ITS NOT MY TASTE!

WHEN SOMEBODY ANALYSES A SWEET LITTLE COOKIE; ONLY TO SHOW WHAT HE/SHE HAS LEARNED AT UNIVERSITY ; THEN HE/SHE NEEDS SOME PUBLIC WHO CLAPS AND SAYS ´´ YOURE SO INTELLIGENT ; SO WISE.... BLA BLA BLA´´

sorry have that to say

:laugh3:

greetings Jan

It's a fair point, but if you ran a bakery, you'd be more analytical about the cookie. And if you were a coffee farmer or distributor, you'd be asking those very questions.

The same goes for musicians...occupational hazard.:D

I THINK THE POINT IS ; THAT MAYBE THE LITTLE PRODUCER-MISTAKES ARE MADE BECAUSE THEY WANTED IT !!!!

I CANT IMAGINE THEY WOULD MAKE MISTAKES!!!

THE SONGS SOUNDS SOMETIMES SO PERFECT AND SOMETIMES SOMEONE EXPLORES SOME MISTAKES!!

FOR EXAMPLE A LOVE WHICH IS ALWAYS THE SAME IS SO BORINGGGGGGGG ISNT IT ?

SO THEY THOUGHT MAYBE : GET SURPISED; GET MORPHINE ; GET WONDERING; GET MORPHINE; HAVE A LOT OF DISCUSSIONS; MATHEMATIC IS IN THE LYRICS; THE SOUND IS A VIVALAVIDA-PLAYGROUND ; SO BACK TO THE CHILDHOOD WITH ADULT-ELEMENTS

(sorry for my english)

gee, thank you. finally, someone on my side. lol. no, i understand, people get defensive about their songs that they love... i'm the same way. however, i was never trying to bash it, or sound like a bitch (i'm a chick by the way... but thats ok haha) .... i was simply just stating my opinion on the overall production behind it and i thought the D# was just odd and maybe unintentional, thats all. i totally accept any debates disagreeing with it, and i understand how people will assume i'm making a big deal over something so small, but people dont have to be so harsh! geesh. the only reason i decided to make a thread about it was because i noticed it right away when i first heard it this morning, and when i showed it later to my dad, whose opinion i value, he noticed the same thing without me mentioning it beforehand.

i think people are so afraid to NOT like this song that anyone who dares to not absolutely adore it is a heretic or something. i even admitted i love the song, i was just a bit underwhelmed by eno's production. for all the money i'm sure it costs to hire him i was just expecting a more thorough job, in my opinion. thats all.

Lol sorry, I wrote it fast and forgot to be gender neutral, sorry 'bout that.

And you do have some good points, I was surprised how jagged and abrasive Chris's vocals were, because they're generally pretty consistent throughout the song, (and the fact that they are professionals) I believe the melody's dissonances are intententional, especially considering the chaotic nature of the song.

Can there be mistakes when making art?

Woah, that sounded way more dramatic than I meant it.

But if these are mistakes...than there are mistakes in everything and everything should be taken apart and analyzed for them...

wtf am I on about?

I don't think there are mistakes in the creation of art, but there can be mistakes in the performance, and usually a good producer will catch them. I still like the 'intentional laziness' theory. I don't think it was an error in the performance per se, but a choice to be casual with the vocals a la Dylan.

As for the mistakes in everything that need to be pulled apart, it's called 'science'!:D We wouldn't know much about how the world works if there weren't people to analyze everything.

To balance that though, it would be an awfully bleak world if we didn't just sit back and enjoy the ride once in a while.

I'm doing a bit of both with VH.:)

When Greta says "mistakes", she means parts of the piece that don't jive with the artists intent for that song or piece of art. If Picasso finishes a painting and then, after selling it, realizes an unintended streak of white paint near the bottom, that would've been a mistake.

In the case of violet hill, Greta is saying that Chris intended to hit different notes than the ones he sings in the song and that these wrong notes may have been overlooked.

even if its not perfectly musically sound, who cares? i don't listen to coldplay for their musicianship

Yes artists do sometimes employ the intentional laziness thing, either to further express the mood of the song, or to do the musical equivalent of throwing darts at paint-filled balloons, but if Chris had fully intended to hit an E, but instead hit a D#(or E flat, whatever it's just an example) that can be safely called a mistake.

(mind you, I don't think Chris made "mistakes" in the sense that he hit notes that he didn't want to hit)

sure you do.

you don't listen to Coldplay for their practice (or non-practice) of musical theory is what you mean haha.

gretas thoughts are good , important and have worth, and on the other side the comments of the other ones are good , important, and have worth, so its interesting to read and learn, so nobodys opinion is bad . But i think in my own oppinion that this ``Mistakes in Violet Hill ( Art ) drops a weird shawdow over it , because ``mistakes`` is the wrong word . We should say music-mathematical incorrect parts . :) even its interesting.

Yep.

Also, when you're in the studio 'accidents' happen. Maybe he went for an E and hit a D# and though 'hey, that's cool. I'll keep that.'. Things like that happen all the time. A mistake became part of the art instead of being counter to it. (Trust me, there are several 'mistakes' on my album that I kept because the end result was better than what I had in mind.)

Oh my word, as several other people have said, who really cares? I'm sure there are bits of VH that do seem a bit wrong, but they're not, doubtlessly they're written that way and to be honest they don't sound half bad, I think they add to the rawness of the track. And at the end of the day, it's a free track, the first in 3 years, so it's not going to be mindblowingly perfect, but it's the first track in THREE YEARS, Chris could sing Baa Baa Black Sheep and the majority of us would buy it because it's the way he does it!

HAHAHAHAHA! I'd PAY to hear that! Although I'd prefer Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star.

Apple Martin posted a review of that one on her blog, and she hated it. She said he was too whiney or something, I'd have to look it up again.

MUAHAHAHAHAHA!

ok then, how about Ring Around The Rosy? The line about Ashes fits right in with Death And All His Friends, lol.

Mistakes?

I will say that in reference to all these supposed mistakes, it sounds find to me. Secondly, for all we know, this Violet Hill may be slightly different then the one we'll hear on the album
