I think it's 'cool' for trying to be new and different, but I don't find it 'moving', if you know what I mean. Much as I do love the song, I hope there are some classic soaring Jonny solos on the album.

 

EDIT: But we may feel differently hearing it live. Sometime things affect us differently in a live setting.

I think its good, it goes with the song really good but it does seem as much as Johnnys guitar is loud he still seems to be limiting himself. Its like hes missing 1 finger. I still love it but Ive played it sooo much!!! The drums are great!!!Will is on top of his game!!

The guitar solo is okay. While the riff is certainly no Iron Man or Smoke on the Water (in terms of how catchy it is), it definitely defines Coldplay's new style. I just wish there was more improvisation on Johnny's part. This morning I found myself singing a guitar solo! :laugh3:

I wouldn't delete this thread. I believe this site should be a place to discuss what we like and what we don't like about Coldplay. Not a virtual church dedicated to how awesome Coldplay is (though they are awesome). Then again, I'm not an admin, so I have no say over what this site should be and what shouldn't. Just giving my two cents.

WHat's happening is that Coldplay are trying to evolve, and it won't please everyone. But I do agree that the piano intro and outro are the best parts of the song.

 

ANd I love Chris's vocals on the outro...best part for me.

haha i'm not really a groupie but i really can only worship this song for now. once i am no longer in awe maybe i will be able to have an intelligent conversation about it. for now all i can say is, i don't think it is an elite coldplay song (yet) but it is very good and gives the rest of the album a lot of promise.

and i think the reason this thread annoys be is because the title is "Don't Want To Post Another Negative Thred" and then this IS a negative thread... haha it's just like... if you don't want to... whyyyyd ya do it? haha

The one thing that irked me about this song was the overuse of the synthesizer at the beginning. Sure 10-15 seconds of it is nice, but the intro lasts for about 40 seconds! And there aren't any memorable things about the intro. At least in Square One you had Johnny playing that 2001-ish (the movie, not the year) guitar riff. But this one was just 40 seconds of plain ambiance. Didn't really like that.

yea i'd agree with that. it is a little too long. especially with this song being as short as it is... i hope this whole short song thing isn't a reoccuring theme on the whole album. i love their 5-6 minute songs.

agree! i liked it, but its not like the best coldplay song, but that wanst speed of sound eighter! but i loved this song more than speed of sound, and that was the first single to one of the greatest albums ever made!

dammit im not a groupie i like violet hill. this is my list of coldplay songs i dont like:

 

1.-speed of sound

2.-low

3.-high speed

4.-whisper

5.-hardest part

Agreed on the long ambient intro...it's a little too 'Eno-y',lol. It could have been shorter, or incorporated a little more musicality, imo.

THat must be the official radio edit since XFM's intro was shorter too. I hate radio edits that cut music or lyrics, so this was a good call.

didnt even think of that! maybe 'viva la vida' (as in the song) ends with this same synth sound that is in the beginning of violet hill. ahh i LOVE when songs flow into eachother...coldplay has never really done this!
