Tottenham 1 - 5 Man City

 

Edin Dzeko scored four as Manchester City maintained their 100% start to the season with an awesome display.

 

Dzeko prodded in from close range from a left-wing cross from Samir Nasri, who was outstanding on his City debut.

 

Peter Crouch headed a good chance to equalise wide before another Nasri cross was neatly headed in by Dzeko.

 

In the second half Dzeko tapped in his third, Sergio Aguero fired in after a mazy run, Younes Kaboul headed one back but Dzeko curled a sublime fifth.

 

After their first match of the season against Everton was postponed because of the London riots, Spurs always knew their start to the campaign would be tough, and having lost at Manchester United they found City even more formidable opponents.

 

Spurs manager Harry Redknapp was not allowed to include new recruit Emmanuel Adebayor under the terms of his loan from City, but was able to field Luka Modric for the first time this season.

 

Modric, still linked with a move to Chelsea, was unable to have much influence in a central-midfield partnership with Niko Kranjcar that was over-run by the fluidity of City, who were simply irresistible going forward.

 

In the early exchanges there were chances at both ends, David Silva testing Brad Friedel with a stinging drive and then drifting effortlessly across the defence and forcing the veteran goalkeeper into another save.

 

Rafael van der Vaart orchestrated the best moments for Spurs, but his shot on the turn and curling free-kick were both turned around the post by Joe Hart.

 

Gareth Bale was kept largely quiet by the returning Pablo Zabaleta but the wide man had a golden opportunity to open the scoring when a delightful Spurs move ended with Aaron Lennon's cross falling to him in space 10 yards out, but he sliced over the bar.

 

Nasri, Aguero and Silva provided some mesmerising moments going forward and soon ensured they were rewarded for their invention.

 

After some delightfully intricate passing at pace, Nasri sent over a perfect left-wing cross for Dzeko who poked in on the volley from six yards.

 

Bale's one moment of brilliance produced a magnificent driven cross which fell perfectly for Crouch but the striker, linked alongside Wilson Palacios with a move to Sunderland, could not direct his diving header on target.

 

City extended their lead when Nasri drifted clear on the left again and crossed for Dzeko, who flicked a back header beyond Friedel in the manner of Javier Hernandez's goal at Stoke last term.

 

Tottenham's hopes of a second-half recovery receded when the threat of Lennon was ended by a groin problem and Dzeko soon completed his hat-trick from barely a yard out, converting Yaya Toure's cutback from the right-hand byline after a devastating overlap.

 

Aguero added a memorable strike when a flash of pace enabled him to wriggle free of Michael Dawson's lunge and he sent an unstoppable shot into the top corner.

 

Kaboul, having endured a torrid afternoon against the subtlety of City's a la carte menu of attacking players, gained some consolation when he rose to head in a Van der Vaart corner.

 

The Netherlands international joined a growing injury list when he hobbled off with hamstring trouble to reduce Spurs to 10 men and Redknapp will hope to add to his squad before they try to gain their first league points away at Wolves on 10 September.

 

There was still time for one more moment of magic from City, Dzeko exchanging passes with Gareth Barry and curling a measured shot past a dejected Friedel into the top corner.

Man Utd 8 - 2 Arsenal

 

Wayne Rooney scored a hat-trick as Manchester United pummelled Arsenal.

 

Danny Welbeck, who was later injured, headed in Anderson's pass and Robin van Persie's penalty was saved by David De Gea before Ashley Young struck.

 

Wayne Rooney put United out of sight with two superb free-kicks before scoring from the spot late on.

 

Nani, Park Ji-sung and Young added further goals with Theo Walcott and Van Persie replying as Carl Jenkinson was sent off on 77 minutes.

 

The Arsenal right-back's second booking means that Arsenal have had a man sent off in each of their opening three Premier League games.

 

And it compounded a miserable afternoon for the Gunners, who could have been beaten by an even greater margin.

 

The only sour note was a hamstring injury to Welbeck, who looks likely to be withdrawn from the England U-21 squad for their Euro 2012 qualifier on Thursday.

 

But it was the perfect response to their neighbours - Manchester City - who earlier beat Tottenham 5-1 at White Hart Lane.

Manchester City chief executive Garry Cook quits over email

 

Manchester City chief executive Garry Cook has resigned over claims he emailed defender Nedum Onuoha's cancer-suffering mother mocking her illness.

 

Cook offered his resignation after an investigation by City found "there is foundation" to the allegations. He had denied sending the message, claiming his account was hacked. The club issued a statement confirming the board had accepted Cook's resignation and that chairman Khaldoon Al-Mubarak had apologised to Dr Onuoha.

 

Defender Onuoha's mother, who acts as his agent, had previously sent a message to Marwood and Cook, explaining that while she was "ravaged with cancer" it would not prevent her negotiating on behalf of her son. Dr Onuoha then received an email, allegedly from Cook and addressed "Brian", which apparently ridiculed her use of language in describing her illness.

 

The email is reported to have read: "Ravaged with it!!...I don't know how you sleep at night. You used to be such a nice man when I worked with you at Nike. G".

 

Dr Onuoha told the Sun the email had left her "humiliated and devastated".

 

The claims led City's board to launch an investigation and, following its findings, Cook offered his resignation and Khaldoon wrote to Dr Onuoha "to apologise for any distress caused".

 

In the statement, Khaldoon said: "Garry has made a remarkable contribution to Manchester City Football Club over the past three years. His judgement in this matter should in no way lead to his accomplishments being overlooked. "On every level, the club is unrecognisable from the organisation which he inherited and our staff and supporter services, community outreach and commercial activity have seen unparalleled growth under his direction with yet more projects to be realised on the horizon.

 

"On behalf of Sheikh Mansour and the Board, I would like to thank him for his energy and tireless commitment to serving all those connected with the football club. He will always be welcome at Manchester City."

 

Cook said: "I am privileged to have held my position at Manchester City Football Club and to have experienced the opportunities that it has presented. The privilege is in part offset however by the significant personal focus which has at times, detracted from the magnificent achievements of those working at the football club. It is that factor, together with my error of judgement in this matter that has prompted me to reach this decision, which I believe is in the best interests of the football club."

 

City director John MacBeath will fill the role of temporary chief executive officer while a replacement is sought.
