Mixtape Exchange

Featured Replies

Okay so here's my review. I've listened to the mixtape about 4 or 5 times now..

Overall impression: I don't hate any of the songs. They are all songs that i can imagine myself listening to. I knew only one of the songs so that's a GOOD thing! discovering new music = awesome

1. I still haven't quite decided if i like this song or think it's just "ok". I don't really love the beginning of the song.. it sounds too light or something. It gets better towards the end when it gets louder.

2. TRAVIS! Ah, My Eyes is one of my favourite Travis songs. It was quite cool to hear this familiar song right in the beginning. It also made me think that the person who made this mixtape is from the uk..

3. Again, i'm not sure if i like the singer's voice or not...the music itself sounds good though. It bothers me that i can't tell what the singer is saying bah. Pretty energetic song and it makes me move my toes & head to the music hah

4. I love the bass line! This band sounds a bit familiar but i just can't put my finger on it.. Maybe i just don't know the band at all but it sounds like some other band i know.

However, i like the tempo and the 2nd male singer singing on the background, his accent is fucking sexy too.

5. I usually don't like this kind of half talk singing. Anyway, i like that there are 2 people singing at the same time. Makes it sound cool. The violin(s) sound rather good too. As a cellist i always appreciate hearing violins/cellos in songs

6. This song was a good choice after all those rock songs. This is one of those easy listening songs. Nice vocals, nice guitar, nice drum beat, nice catchy chorus. It's one of those songs that makes me whistle along.

7. The first thing i paid my attention to was FEMALE vocals! This song makes me feel dreamy..those vocals sounds so fragile that it makes me feel like i'm in a wonderland. Usually when the vocals are like this the music makes me feel sleepy but in this song it's different, the melody & other instrument are strong and that makes this song great!

8. A find this song a bit boring. The chorus isn't that bad though. I usually don't like female vocals and for some reason i don't like this one that much either. I just feel like skipping this song mwha. It's a bit annoying 'cause i dont hate the song.. it just doesn't make me feel anything.

9. This song was so short that i didn't even pay attention to it at first. I thought it was the ending or the beginning of the other songs. In my opinion the song should be longer! I like instrumentals and althought this wasn't really an instrumental it was close to be on haha

10. There are million songs like this one. There's really nothing special in this song.. It's not even catchy. Sorry, but i can't say much about this one :\

11. Beautiful singing. I'd like to hear more songs by this artist/band just because i like the singing so much and i'd like to hear if he sings like this in every song haha. I actually know the melody already and that's always a good sign! The song is maybe a tiny bit too long though..

12. This could be either Interpol or Editors. Or then not. First of all, i always mix interpol and editors for some weird reason. Second, every time i hear this song i feel like i know this band..but i just can't put my finger on it. It'll be interesting to hear what band this is! The chorus is coolio, the drumming is wicked.

13. This songs makes me want to DANCE! The singing is somewhat mysterious.. The guitar riff is simple, but catchy. I know that some other people might think that it's boring 'cause the same stuff just keeps on going and going but i like this!

14. This is a good feeling song. This would be one of those songs i'd listen to when i'm feeling low. It's not too crazy or energetic but the "lalalalalalala/dadadadaaa" part is fun enough

15. I'm almost 100% that this song is by either Interpol or Editors. (read 12.)

I like the beginning of the song.. the piano fools me to think that it's a slooow song when it's actually not. the drumming is cool, the singing is nice, the chorus is catchy.

"These thoughts are must not think of, dreams i can't make sense of, I need you to tell me it's okay" I actually think this could be my favourite song on this mixtape.

16. After that previous song the beginning of this sounds lovely too. I like the fact that i can actually hear what he's singing about, so alriiight! the song is not too simple, it has some catchy drumming and the singing is quite interesting too.. i want to know what the singer looks like. Unfortunately it's sounds a bit weak compared to that previous song.

17. Time for relaxing music. Sweet vocals, acoustic guitar and some random instrument i don't know. I can imagine this song being used in a tv-show. It works well as a background music too. The singing sounds a bit blah at some points but over all the singer does a good job.

18. Nice decision for the final song. I can say for sure that i haven't heard a song by this band before. I would recognise that singing if i had hear it before. This is one of the best songs on this mixtape. For some reason i find the singing very interesting.. in a good way obviously. I already start to sing along when that "c'mon, c'mon" part comes  The music itself isn't that special but it sounds darn good! It just ends too soon.

I'm not sure how well this person knows me.. But the first time i heard the mixtape i really started to think that the person actually has checked my last.fm profile or something and totally knows what kind of music i like to listen to!

However, i do think that the mitape was a tiny bit too long..11-15 songs would've been great already!

[info] I'm too lazy to read all the stuff i wrote above so i'm sorry if it makes no sense or the use of english is shite [/info]

^interesting review!

PS. your english is PERFECT. :D

hah well it's not absolutely perfect 'cause i already spotted some mistakes but those were made by accident but oh well.

Oh, and i looked that one song up (song 15) and it was by editors! I knew it

Dang, i really love this song weee

Wow! I love your review. This is my mix-tape and sadly I read your review and wondered what some of the songs were LOL. Im going to check it out again - as I wrote it down but then had to change some. How embarrassing. I will add - it was Editors - When Anger Shows and yes indeed Travis - one of my favorite bands. And Im actually from the States (NYC at the moment).

I never checked your last.fm but I chose music I thought people should know. So when I get this together Ill put up the complete posting. Listening to it now :)

tu ingles es muy perfecto. mi espanol es no muy bueno, pero estudiaba espanol para muchos anos.

1, I want to download other people's mixtapes now! :wideeyed:

and 2, I want my mixtape to listen to! heh.... :curtain:

Woot, from the states, really? Damn..

Well i guess our music tastes are quite alike then  i really felt that the mixtapes was made for me personally

Haha, i'm not actually spanish (me is finnish) but for some reason i actually understood what you wrote in spanish althought i haven't studied it at all :uhoh:

1. Gwyneth - Someone Still Loves You, Boris Yeltsin

One of my favorite bands - but I chose this song because of the song title - it somehow felt fitting. I recommend checking out some of their other songs - vocals are a bit more prominent. This is one of their slowest songs - if you ever watched the OC their songs were on it quite a bit. And I started it slow because I had a plan to build up the tempo.

2. My Eyes - Travis

the most beautiful song ever written by Fran Healy.

3. Post Punk Progression - Snow Patrol

I believe this is a b-side. They used to play it live all the time and the crowd would get worked up into a frenzy. Its so energetic I always want to dance when I hear it. "You wont be around forever girl, you gotta grab life with both hands" - those are some of the lyrics. It sounds this way live too - almost muddled sounding.

4. Auslandmission - The Rakes

one of my favorite tracks from The Rakes. Its off their demos - and the lead singer has a great voice. theres something entirely sexy about this song.

5. Dying is Fine - Ra Ra Riot

they're a band from Syracuse, NY (almost local to NYC these days as they play here all the time). I love the use of all their instruments. They have a cellist and violinist in their full line up. This is quite sad - but I believe its the drummer doing the backing vocals - and he sadly died this last year at age 23 or so. Theres a beautiful sadness to the song, and its fitting the title is dying is fine. If you like this they do an amazing Kate Bush cover of "Hounds of Love" - and the violins are perfect for it.

6. Fear of Falling - Palace Fires

After Gene broke up, 2 of the guys formed Palace Fires. I think the vocals and lyrics are just beautiful.

7. Thursday - Asobi Seksu

Im a sucker for female vocalists and I think she has one of the most beautiful voices ever. Dreampop at its finest!

8. Cherries in the Snow - Elk City

A local band out of Brooklyn. Ive always loved this song. Catchy and simple

9. The World The People Together (Come On) - The Dandy Warhols

this song is actually 4:20 long or so. The beginning is all instrumental with their voices in the background (i cant remember if eno worked with them on this album). I love Courtney's breathy vocals - its straight up so sexiness. This song always reminded me of CSC the way it was done with vocals, but its very Dandy Warhols. One of my favorite bands!

10. Alabama - Birdmonster

my favorite band from San Francisco. The boys are adorable, but mostly they have very catchy, fun songs that are quite bouncy. I think seeing them live would change anyones opinion of them, besides making you fall in love with Pete - who has a similar look to Guy - but is much more spastic on guitar!

11. Colorguard - Division Day

some beautiful lyrics and such a beautiful sound. Best friends with Birdmonster, Birdmonster got me into their music. i had a hard time on choosing which song from them, as I think they all are about as good. and youre right - just a tad bit too long, but the guitars are beautiful.

12. Race To The City - The Cinematics

this is one of the catchiest songs but I never heard any editors in it. Interesting call. I love how the drums are so prominent in it.

13. Ankle Injuries - Fujiya & Miyagi

I love the low-vocals in this and them saying their name in it over and over. And its hard _Not_ to dance when you hear them. My friends and I are obsessed with them.

14. New Hampshire - Wild Light

they got huge opening for Arcade Fire on their European tour. I just love the lyrics and all the boys harmonizing. The chorus so simple and easy to sing along to.

15. When Anger Shows - Editors

What can I say - Im in love with Tom. I think this is one of the most beautiful songs he's ever written. "in that moment you realize that something you thought would always be there will die, like everything else - these thoughts I must not think of, dreams I cant make sense of, i need you to tell me its ok" -- lyrics have never been more beautiful. and then it gets to the bass line and wham! im done for! LOL

16. Unfinished Business - White Lies

Yeah to go from Editors to White Lies was a deliberate choice. They always reminded me of editors/interpol. I think the darkness of the song. But the lyrics are beautiful. Even tho its terribly sad and the video makes me want to cry. But once that guitar kicks in and youre into the chorus I find it impossible to not listen to. 'but theres a light in the distance, waiting for me, i will wait for you, so get off your low, lets kiss like we used to' - i can picture Tom singing this same song. Im curious about the lead singer too - ill tell you in early august, if ive not jumped him by then. seeing them 3 times in 3 days.

17. Music in a Foreign Language - Lloyd Cole

i love his voice and fell in love with this song the lyrics are just beautiful. i think its one of the most beautiful songs he's ever done - i really recommend checking out his stuff. or lloyd cole & the commotions. I cry almost everytime I hear this song.

18. Come On - Air Traffic

I chose this song deliberately and knew right away this would be the last song. Great vocals and I love the piano - reminds me of Keane. Theres such emotion in his voice.

Glad you enjoyed the mix! It was fun making it - and hopefully I got to introduce you to some new bands you might not have ever listened to.

and if anyone is interested - this was my best of 2007 mixtape that my friends and I compiled at the end of 2007

http://www.megaupload.com/?d=C3NTT7OV

ok so now id like to add some additional thoughts - like i said id be way embarrassed when i saw the track listing and indeed some of this is mortifying that i didnt know who it was.

first off - i remember the orb being big in the 90's. i listened to them in college. if i can find my 'little puffy clouds' on CD - ill send it to you. Secondly, Jonny Greenwood of radiohead fame - did the music for PT Andersen's "There Will Be Blood" - his orchestra that he wrote is just beautiful. If youre curious about it - shoot me a message and Ill send it to you. Its so worth hearing.

thanks, i might like The Orb and Johnny Greenwood.

By the way, here's the link to my mixtape: http://www.mediafire.com/?bx1gw11zo5g

Feel free to review the songs here as well.

Woot, from the states, really? Damn..

Well i guess our music tastes are quite alike then  i really felt that the mixtapes was made for me personally

i wanted to add - im so glad you liked the mixtape and im glad you thought it was made for you personally. that makes me way happy. :D i re-listened to it and i was loving a lot of it LOL. always a good sign. not sure all the songs worked on the re-listen, but felt it kinda gave a good mix of most the things I listen to.

Here's my review. Only 3 listens as of press time.

Overall, it's not bad. Not the usual stuff I listen to. I heard lots of British acts here, which is something I'm not too familiar with. The mixtape is a bit long, though, twelve songs would have been great.

Thank you for this mixtape! It pushed me to listen to more of Santogold! Hope you provide us the track listing so that we could know more about the artists included better!

Track 1 - A British band definitely. The song reminds me of The Rakes minus the screaming. I like the rhythm, similar to Bloc Party's. I guess the title is "There's a Thing Called..." Though I don't listen to songs like this often, it's an ok track for me. I guess the artist is Macabees.

Track 2 - I like the vocals here. I would have to say that she sounds a bit like Nelly Furtado. I know this one's Santogold though, as I've already listened to one of the band's song, you know, the one with Julian Casablancas and N.E.R.D! I like this one, probably a keeper, because the song immediately registered to me.

Track 3 - "Happiness is an Illusion..." The melody is repetitive, there's not much variety except for the latter part. I was a bit bored listening to this one. Listening to it again, I liked the intro. Fratellis, perhaps?

Track 4 - Very catchy intro. About suicide? Very energetic song, though. I love the earlier part, not so much the latter part. The latter's a bit messy.

Track 5 - Very unique vocals. isn't this a Pete Doherty song? The title for this could be "Let's Get Married." I like this one, could use more listens!

Track 6 - An interesting instrumental. Sounds a bit eerie with the static effects, haunting piano and what appears to me as foghorn. I'm not sure the artist, my bet is "Do Say Make Think.

Track 7 - "Mercury?" Is this a Bloc Party song? I swear the vocals is from that Bloc Party guy. Nice bass lines.

Track 8 - Hmmm, sounds like Kasabian meets Daft Punk. I dig the retroish sound. The song however drags in the middle portion because of lack of singing.

Track 9 - I like the layered sound. Puts me in a different mood, like driving in the middle of the night, alone, in Las Vegas. Haha.

Track 10 - I swear I've heard this song before, I just can't put my finger to it. I like the music box effects (or is it xylophone?) I name this song "Borrowed Time".

Track 11 - A song Maroon 5 could have made. If it is indeed Maroon 5, I appreciate incorporating synths and the overall melancholic atmosphere.

Track 12 - The female vocals is good. There's an almost gothic/darkcore feel to it.

Track 13 - Santogold again! I liked this one better than the first. But it is better to put just one song per artist on your mixtape, so we can be assured of variety. Having said that, however, I simply like Santogold's style. This one sounds happy.

Track 14 - "I Never Knew My Name," Could this be from The Teenagers? Not my thing, though. Well this song is simple and does not register that much.

Track 15 - There's an odd sense of familiarity with this song, but I think this is my first time listening to it. Maybe I know the artist, so my best guess would have to be The Libertines. Upbeat sounding, I like this one a bit.

Track 16 - My guess is Mando Diao. And the title is "Be Good or Be Gone," nice acoustic ballad. This mixtape lacks this kind of music, so I appreciate this one a lot.

Track 17 - Sounds British, and I'm not that familiar with British acts. I don't think I like this one that much. The vocals are not very good and I don't understand what he's saying.

Track 18 - Another instrumental! Nice idea. I like this one, not the usual stuff I listen to, sorta string driven, but has a modern feel to it. I don't have an idea about this one, Spiritualized would be my lousy guess.

Track 19 - Retro sounding, very upbeat and energetic. I don't know the artist (maybe N.E.R.D.?), but it's a nice closing track.

great review. cant wait to hear who all these british artists are. i feel like i should know some of them, based on what you wrote - but you can never quite tell :)

im so loving these and esp reading them when we have no clue who they are!

It was my mixtape extrasupervery! :) (surprise! :uhoh: :) )

I'm glad you enjoyed listening to most of it.... and I agree, it is far too long! Sorry. haha. I added the last track, last minute so that made it even longer. I know a few I could have taken off too.... It is also mainly full of British artists too, since that's who I mainly listen to :) Anyway, onto the tracklisting.......

Track 1: Balloons - Foals

This is my favourite song by them, I feel it's quite accessible, with amazing little melodies and a fast pace in the song. British band, yeah, from Oxford. (other songs I recommend: "Red Sock Pugie", "Olympic Airways")

Track 2: You'll Find A Way - Santogold

I just love her whole album....it drifts from genre to genre on each song and sounds so good. I'm glad you wanna get into her!

Track 3: Now I'm Everyone - Biffy Clyro

I agree this song can be a bit monotonous and steady...but I like it for that reason, kind of, especially when it changes into the strange repetitive part at the end... kind of hypnotic. They're from Scotland if you didn't know.

Track 4: Space and The Woods - Late Of The Pier

This is a crazy random song I downloaded for free, I quite liked the electro feel to it. I agree though that it's a bit messy, They're a small British band, not sure if they'll be around much or not.

Track 5: First Love - Maccabees

This is my favourite song of theirs...it's simple, and has really quick/slow parts in it. His voice is different too. I have a small affection for them because the band was created in my hometown, and I worked with a guy who is best mates with one of them. British band.

"Precious Time" is another fave of mine.

Track 6: The Gallery - Muse

A lesser known earlier track by Muse, it has always been a favourite. Kinda instrumental, like you say. Maybe try their album 'Hullabaloo" if you liked it.

Track 7: Mercury - Bloc Party

I just threw this one in here, because Im quite a big fan of theirs and wondered how this song would go down to someone who isn't necessarily a big fan....seems that you kind of liked it! It grew on me.

Track 8: Idealistic - Digitalism

A friend sent me this song, just a good dance-y track. I don't know any other stuff by them though :\

Track 9: SW - Blonde Redhead

I got into this band after seeing them support Interpol, very dreamy shoegaze-y music to listen to with Other songs to recommend by them from me "A Cure", "Spring and By Summer Fall", "Led Zep" ,"23". Paul Banks played on stage with them :nice:

Track 10: Selfish Son - Bloc Party

One of my favourite b-sides of Bloc Party. Like you, I like the glockenspiel part :nice: I like the darker parts of this song. It kind of goes from light to dark and back again if that makes sense.

Track 11: Up On The Ladder - Radiohead

This is one of my favourites from the In Rainbows stuff...I love this song, so epic.

Track 12: What's A Girl To Do - Bat For Lashes

This is another artist from my hometown, heh. I only know two songs by her, this one, and "Prescilla". My favourite thing about this song is when the bass kicks in at 0.45, and I like her voice too.

Track 13: Lights Out - Santogold

I think I like this one better than 'You'll Find a Way" too. I love the way she sings in this song. Everyone listen to her!

Track 14: Another Number - The Cribs

The Cribs are British, they have a very raw sound to them I think. It took me a while to get into them at first, then I really liked them. They can be quite noisy, but they have some slower songs, and their last album was produced by Alex Kapranos of Franz....it's a little smoother... "Mens Needs, Women's Needs, Whatever".

Track 15: Loughborough Suicide - The Young Knives

British band, I only know a few of their songs due to my flatmate introducing them to me. I like them, good rounded indie sort of songs, with sometimes comical lyrics.

Track 16: Be Good or Be Gone - Fionn Regan

I'm glad you like this one! His whole album is very folky, I love it. It's called "The End of History". He's from Ireland.

Track 17: Milk - Kings Of Leon

This song is kinda quiet and strange, and it's KOL, so an American southern drawl in the voice is apparent, heh! Maybe I like this song because it reminds me of when I heard it at Glasto a month ago :) |f you don't know KOL, "King of the Rodeo" and all of their stuff is great.

Track 18: Anthem - Emancipator

A friend suggested Emancipator to me. He makes music and also samples a lot of stuff, "Electronica / Trip Hop / Down-tempo" according to the myspace. I love the way that this song builds and builds, and it's just beautiful I think.

Track 19: Make This Work - Magistrates

This is a song I have been going on about for the past week, I love it. Funky and summery, and retro like you say. I havn't heard any of their other stuff yet, as they're a brand new band I think.

Here is the link to download my mixtape! :)
