Everyone should receive their PM with some information by now.

Because I'll be absent for 2 weeks I won't be able to check this thread daily - so if I don't send you a PM saying your mixtape has been sent in 2 days time, please give your mixtape link to stephanbass. ;)

Having a little trouble here... I've got the songs in my mixtape picked out and in a folder on my desktop. I can't figure out how to compress it into a .rar file and upload it to sendspace. Help? Please?

I take it you have WinRar installed on your computer? If you do, then just highlight all of the tracks and right click on one of them, and click on "Add to archive". Once the .rar file is made, go to megaupload.com, or similar, and click 'Browse' and then search for the .rar file you just made and click 'open'. Type in a meaningful description and tick the 'I accept terms and conditions' box, then 'Send'. When it has finished uplaoding the upload bar will turn green and a link to the file will appear near the top of the screen (on Megaupload anyway).

This should be a semi-regular thing - there's about a million songs I wanted to include, but if I did my mixtape would have taken 10 kazillion days to listen to.

Bump!

I can't wait to read the reviews! :nice:

Who didn't get your mixtape yet?

I've already got it :dozey: It's quite cool

i guess no one wants to be the first one to post their review

I've not had mine yet, but I could give you a review of the one I made if you like :P

mine wont download. I think I might not be able to do it, my computer is completely screwed up and all virus-y. What happens if I have to pull out?

is it the problem in download page? if not i can always upload it again - or your mixtape maker. :)

ok heres my review - its a bit short but ive only had about 3-5 complete listens and never really put my thoughts together till at work last week. im running out of time as im headed to chicago and have too many shows. ok anyway ---

overall - i thought there were some great songs to it, but i felt like i was stuck listening to the orb. not great music for work, but at times it completely worked. and dont get me wrong - i love the orb - im just not sure i can be in that frame of mind all the time. just think 'puffy little clouds' and thats how i felt.

1. i would have sworn this was the orb - so i cant wait to hear who it is - probably sigur ros or something which sadly i never listen to - but i should as im seeing them in concert - has that dream-like spaciness sound to it that always makes me feel like ive been transported to another world.

2. hell its the teenagers - and if theyre not the teenagers they should be. im quite sure the song is in french but has that same french pop sound that theyre using. esp with the very low vocals - thats almost kinda breathiness sexiness. if its yelle - im doubly embarrassed as i saw her live this year!

3. hell i swore this could have been early blur - damon at his finest - and then i was like 'oh f***! thats not blur - its the f'ing streets!' - about now my friend in london would be dying laughing as he loves the streets and always made me listen to them. can i just say the streets are brilliant and the fact that i always think its early blur is the highest compliment.

4. the song was too short for me that it left no impact. ah well.

5. everytime i hear this song i think of the genius of beirut. if its not beirut, they should cover it.

6. oohhh lots of instruments! yay! its so soft/calm and it just blends together so well. must find out who this artist is.

7. frightened rabbit - i never quite got the hype of them, and then i heard this song and they are the most beautiful lyrics. now i understand what my friends were talking about.

8. the second song to remind me of the orb - and somehow i also jotted down Jonny Greenwood's orchestra. now that stuff is brilliant!

9. Get Well Soon - Witches Rest Now in the Fire

all i can say is - whoever did this you ROCK! it was bizarre i was listening to this/singing along - going oh i know all these lyrics. WTF is it. so ill admit i had to google it because i couldnt live without knowing who it was. im a sucker for lyrics and this guy/gal has genius writing abilities. im in love with their music. and the deep vocals on the lead singer - oohh yeah! prob my favorite song.

10 - wolf parade - just shoot me now. if i have to hear one more person tell me the geniusness of this band - ill shoot myself. the lead singer's voice goes down for me with the lead singers voice of clap your hands say yeah. its the most irritating song that i couldnt listen to it after the first time.

11. this song really reminded me of jonny greenwoods orchestra. i saw it performed live - and it was the one time i had chills going down my spine. i was reliving that whole experience still picturing i was in the movie 'there will be blood'. and im sure this is totally different - but you owe it to yourself to listen to his orchestra. hes an artist in every sense of the word.

12. another short song and great way to end the mix. i loved the melodies. just a simple folk-y song!

so there you have it. reading this makes me laugh at times. sometimes its hard to get the real essence at work, but unfortunately time is of the essence and im using my time wisely at work ;) cant wait to hear what most of this stuff is. im ready to start laughing at myself - wondering how i didnt know some of this. seriously tho - this got me to hear some stuff that i prob would never listen to (im sure a lot of it is newer indie artists that i should know). cant wait to see some of the other mixes :)

cheers!

i really enjoyed reading your review.:)

i really enjoyed reading your review.:)

thanks! im really getting antsy to hear what the songs are. I noticed you have a few Wolf Parade songs in your sig. and thought maybe it was your mixtape.

Haha, you're right!!!!

Thanks for the great review!

Though you only got one song right (and three artists correct), it seems that you liked most of the songs in my mixtape (except for Wolf Parade, lol, but I think you might still get to like the band in one form or another, which I will explain later *evil grin*).

So here is the track list:

1. The Books - Vogt Dig For Kloppervok

I like the samples used in this song. One of the clips used is from Lewis Carroll's poem, "Jabberwocky." The song provides a surreal atmosphere. You're right in saying that listening to this is an out of this world experience!

2. Lali Puna - Contratempo

I chose this song because I always find songs in foreign language (aside from English) very interesting. This is for me very soothing but gloomy.

3. The Streets - Fit But You Know It

The Steets are never boring. Pretty accent too. Lol.

4. The National - Squalor Victoria

I like The National because of Matt's baritone voice. Yeah I guess this is a short number, but it's a grower. The strings and drum parts are not bad either!

5. Alaska in Winter - Close Your Eyes - We Are Blind

Yep, that's Beirut's Zach Condon! He lent his gorgeous voice in this song. Well, the vocalist of Alaska in Winter sings using the vocoder, so this song really stands out from the album, because it's the most different from the set.

6. Andrew Bird - Scythian Empire

So now you know! Lol. This my favorite Andrew Bird song. I read somewhere that he's a professional whistler, so his whistling in the song is more or less perfect! Haha.

7. Frightened Rabbit - Poke

You're right about Frightened Rabbit's beautiful and heartfelt lyrics. Whenever I listen to this, I could really feel the singer's emotion.

8. Ólafur Arnalds - Himininn er að hrynja, en stjörnurnar fara þér vel

I need to find out who or what The Orb is! A taste of Iceland. He's really talented you should check him out!

9. Get Well Soon - Witches! Witches! Rest Now In the Fire

I'm surprised that you know this, of all songs! I only find few people who knows this one, so congrats! You really have a nice taste in music!

10. Wolf Parade - I'll Believe In Anything

I used to hate Wolf Parade. Well, the band's music grew on me and now I find Spencer Krug a genius! (Don't shoot yourself plz!)

11. Final Fantasy - If I Were A Carp

I'm not familiar with the music of Johnny Greenwood, but I am glad you like this, considering that Owen Pallett is one of my all-time favorite artists. It's the creepiest FF song I could find, so I added it to the list.

12. Sunset Rubdown - Child-Heart Losers

I think in time, you will get to like Wolf Parade, if not, then you might probably love Sunset Rubdown anyway. This is Spencer Krug's (of Wolf Parade fame) side project. I like Sunset Rubdown better because the flow in the albums are more consistent than Wolf Parade's.

I'll soon provide a link to my mixtape. I'll be uploading it soon. Hope the others will like it too!

ok so now id like to add some additional thoughts - like i said id be way embarrassed when i saw the track listing and indeed some of this is mortifying that i didnt know who it was.

first off - i remember the orb being big in the 90's. i listened to them in college. if i can find my 'little puffy clouds' on CD - ill send it to you. Secondly, Jonny Greenwood of radiohead fame - did the music for PT Andersen's "There Will Be Blood" - his orchestra that he wrote is just beautiful. If youre curious about it - shoot me a message and Ill send it to you. Its so worth hearing.

now onto the mixtape...

The Books - never heard of - as far as I know

Lali Puna - recognize the name

The Streets - i did recognize that lovely cockney accent :)

The National - oh how i didnt recognize Matt's voice is a travesty. Ive seen them live quite a few times - but for whatever reason it didnt register. im telling you - my best friend would kill me.

Zach Condon's voice - I knew it sounded familiar :)

Andrew Bird - I love Heretics. never listened to much of his other stuff, but Im thinking I really should!

Frightened Rabbit - Ill have to check out more of their stuff.

Ólafur Arnalds - Himininn er að hrynja, en stjörnurnar fara þér vel -- oohh icelandic bands - ive listened to mum a bit whom i love and need to listen to sigur ros stuff, but ill check him/her out :)

Get Well Soon - I dont know how I knew who they were - but some stuff Ill randomly hear. My friends (DJs) spin a lot of really new stuff, so Id not be surprised if he was spinning this lately.

Wolf Parade - well maybe ill give them another listen. :)

Final Fantasy - Arent they Canadian? Im quite sure ive seen them before - or just seen the name a lot. i didnt think i liked them too much, but ill give them another listen.

Sunset Rubdown - they just played a show here in NYC from what I remember. if its the same band - a friend saw it and said they were great. ill definitely listen to more of their stuff.

Thanks for a great mix! I enjoyed listening to it.

Cant wait to see the review of my mix! Now Im really curious of other reviews.

hey this is a great idea.. Nina you should do another one!!
