cropcircle
This isn't a number x thread to say I love or I hate VLV. I love every album. What I want to say is that this afternoon, after listening many times to VLV, i listened to old stuff. It's amazing how simple "For you", "See you soon" or "Help is round the corner" sound. when in VLV they put I don't know how instruments parts in it, maybe they should sometimes comme back to something more simple. Just 2 guitars, or a guitar and a piano. Just 2, 3 or 4 guys sitting in a room... Does anyone feel like that ?

lndnsky
Yes... Sometimes I feel like that... But its great to put on albums from first to last on. You realize how much music changes. They are improving from the first song until the last one. Its just great.
Dapper-Dan-Man
A really enjoy the diversity of VLV. In my opinion, it's a vast improvement on Parachutes.

ApproximatelyInfinite
as much as i love VLVOD, i completely agree. i've had the entire coldplay catalogue on shuffle for the past few days and...i find myself a bit nostalgic for the old days. it was so beautiful in its simplicity. VLVOD is beautiful too, but not in the same way. i love everything that they've done, but i do really wonder what they'd sound like if they didn't change so much and get so big... RunForTheHills
Does anyone feel like that ?Completely agree. I think the new album is fantastic, in it's own way, in that it takes the lushness of their sound on X&Y, and makes almost every aspect of the music more interesting and lively. And whereas X&Y was quite flat in a way, there is actually some dynamics on this one - they go loud, quiet, chilled, urgent, and even weird across the 10 songs on there. But I agree about how beautiful the old stuff was, I mean See You Soon and others from that era are the type of songs that got me hooked to Coldplay in the first place - it's that simplicity and beauty of their earlier music that just can't be beaten for me. And there's also the passion in those songs that I think dwindled a bit as time went on... but with the new album, there's definitely more feeling in the songs again. And I'm definitely more a fan for their "underproduced" sound, the 'guitar and a piano' thing you mentioned. After I heard Parachutes, I knew I was a fan there and then, and I can't say that might have been the case if X&Y was the first Coldplay album I heard. It's not the sound of the music that counts for me - it's the music itself that matters. And that's why I was so blown away and excited by the acoustic version of Lovers In Japan. As much as I like the album version, the acoustic version is like the perfect Coldplay song for me, a return to their earlier sound, but at the same time, a little more mature and refined, and even a little more epic without trying to be. THAT's the Coldplay that I fell in love with.
footyfan10
I totally agree about liking it when the sound was very simple, but I love the new stuff too. If anything, I would look at a few examples as reason for you to not think this old sound is gone for good. U2, one of my favorite bands, came out with All that You Can't Leave Behind in 2000. They had been going for just over twenty years, they'd changed their styles many times, but that was the most mellow album they made. I don't think Coldplay is going to abandon their roots, but it makes sense in my book for them to expand and change themselves, so that they can show off their chops. I have no doubt we'll get more of the Parachutes style Coldplay in the future. For now though I'm more than content with Viva la Vida.
