Coldplay vs. U2 for album of the year?

Featured Replies

U2's 12th studio album also comes out this year (possibly in late October) and it is produced obviously by the genius Brian Eno. Now I know this forum is filled with Coldplay fanatics, as am I, but who do you honestly think would win? It may be a little soon to guess since we haven't heard any of U2's new songs, one of which is entitled "Moment of Surrender". Eno called it, "the best thing" he's ever done with U2.:stunned:

this sucks asssssssssss............i hops u2 makes a horrible album(no offensive to all u u2 fans)

i thnk coldplay is gonna win in sales worldwide and u2 its gonna win grammys(cause they have the music industry in their pockets).

darn, that's a hard hit. it's like, you helped your friend, then you help your other friend but then those two friends you helped rival.

I look forward to U2's album, I defintely think Coldplay's will end up more successful though. It's hard to judge though since we haven't heard the U2 album yet.

exactly....and then what if he helps u2 more then coldplay(u know since u2 and brian have been friends longer)...that would suck even more

i know! that's the problem with those kinds of things. two of the biggest bands in the world. you help the both of them then.. this happens.

well i dont like u2 but i respect them i think they gonna win a lot of grammys but cp its gonna win in worldwide sales but who cares both are the best bands in the world and u2 have a longer carrier so this comparison is unfair. i wonder where its gonna be coldplay in the same years of carrier that have u2 right know.

coldplay has to win grammys too

coldplay has to win grammys too

i dont think so if the albums of each bands are the same as good the industry people its gonna vote for u2 its a fact they did it in 2002 or 2003 i cant remember.

Ohh, well, honestly, U2 is like being like the Rolling Stones, but, way much better. Their style is unique, idk, but Coldplay's new expectative is something that will make them feel like never before, that being saying "We are trying to get better, not bigger".

Cant wait for the U2 album, should be great as always, im not to bothered what is more successful, they are both two great band's and its great that we get to hear two amazing album's this year :D

Coldplay will win it though since U2's release would be towards the end of the year, too late for a 2nd single or huge overall sales until the following year.

ya cause coldplay did one type of music for a while that sounded amazing....but know there doing another type of music and it sounds amazing too.........COLDPLAY IS THE BEST!!

There's no doubt, U2 is an amazing band. However...their most recent album was a little bit of a slump in my opinion. I hope they do well, of course, but I know where my allegiance lies ;)

Wow, that's saying a lot onsidering how great joshua tree was and how hard they worked on WTSHNN. Don'r know about a contest, but I'll be looking forward to it.

Grammys and most awards are a load of shit. Who fookin cares what those tools think. Who will win...fans of music as we will get two stellar LPs in the same year.

well he said the same thing before ATYCLB and that album was a real let down for me but then i discovered a new band called coldplay and the album AROBTTH and i changed team.

ATYCLB a let down? I mean I like Joshua Tree a little better, sure, but that one is one of their best albums in my opinion. If any album should be branded a let down, it should be HTDAAB, but even then I have to say I fail to see why that album is so underrated. There's some great songs on there.

I really hope this new one is a masterpiece though :P A cross between the Joshua Tree and their last two albums would be perfect for me :nice:

Mate, your signature lyrics are wrong!

The Carter 3 by Lil Wayne will win album of the year. Who is Coldplay and U2?

they're both my favourite bands..

can't make a call until I hear some sounds from U2's album however I do believe that if U2 are able to produce a CD that is as good as their last two albums then it will be more commercially successful..

VLVODAAHF is a great CD which I enjoy, but the songs on it, with the exception on VLV, Violet Hill and perhaps Lost!, aren't really mainstream if you know what I mean..

I feel that if U2 produce a more pop - mainstream album with plenty of number 1 hits then they'll sell more copies..

not saying either bands music is any better than the other, just thinking about record sales.

I guess it will depend on who promotes there album better in terms of opening week sales. Coldplay did a really good job promoting to the masses with the 1,2,3 punch...free single, then viva la vida, and the itunes commercial. It sounds like U2 is going to give us something a little different from there previous 2 albums now that they have won relevance back.

As far as grammy's and long term sales go they mean nothing to me, and are irrelevant to how great an album is. So I think U2 fans will be biased, and vice versa

this new U2 album is gonna be stellar, I hope - having a good producer makes all the difference (as we now know) and the only other U2 albums produced by Eno and Lanois are Unforgettable Fire, Joshua Tree and Achtung Baby (my 3 favorites of theirs). And it seems that, despite their ambitions for shitloads of money, critical acclaim and Grammies, they haven't lost their focus/touch.

I have to admit that VLV is an excellent album and has restored my faith in Coldplay almost completely, but U2 will always be the best band in the world in my eyes, and, unfortunately, this is a sentiment shared by many people world over. U2 are golden oldies and they have more experience under their collective belt; they just give off the impression of being more confident in what they're doing and not so much focussed on wanting to be 'as good as' other artists (as Coldplay seem to be, in general) and more focussed on their own constant improvement. So I can see them winning in the critical stakes, cos they have the utter respect of the music industry these days (not saying Coldplay don't deserve it, in fact I think they do, but people were stingy about giving VLV 5 stars).

In terms of commercial success, I can see Coldplay winning this one - in many ways, they are more of a pop group than U2; you can see it if you compare How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb's sales to X&Y's - X&Y stayed at the top of the US charts for three weeks, while HTDAAB was only there for one (plus far measlier sales). And before that, All That You Can't Leave Behind only got to number 3 in America, despite projections of strong sales. U2 haven't had a song in the US Top Ten since 1997 (although Vertigo would have been if they were counting download sales back then) while Coldplay are currently sitting on 2, plus one number 1. Compare that to U2's early career (they didn't have a top ten/number one until With Or Without You in 1987, 5 albums in). And just generally, Coldplay are the kind of artist anyone would buy; they don't cater to a particular audience, whereas a lot of people consider U2 to be too old to bother with.

Sorry, that's just my ramblings on the subject - feel free to take issue with any of it
