From the hermit's perspective, all I know is based on looking at the stats for this site at Quantcast and BigBoards. A Very strong following, but this is a country of 300 some odd million or so. What's the pop. in the UK?

They're on the TV shows all the time, so I would have to say pretty strong.;)

On a scale of 1 to 10, the Beatles being 10 and U2 being about an 8, I'd say Coldplay are about a 7. 7.5 if they keep at it on the same scale for a few more years (only 4 albums so far) easily and 8 if they someday release another significant album.

"Coldplay is big - really big - you just won't believe how vastly, hugely mind-bogglingly big they are. You may think it's a long way down the road to the chemist, but that's just peanuts to Coldplay."

(alright that might not make sense, but don't panic) :P

edit: I hope someone else has read those books, otherwise that ^ really made no sense *grins*

they're pretty big, anyway.

Agreed. I might even argue that Coldplay and U2 are neck and neck in the U.S...

Coldplay is pretty huge here...I was kind of surprised to look at some of those chart placings in the US, because except a few singles, most didn't chart that high. I guess most buy the albums instead. And the average person probably knows quite a few of their singles (Clocks, The Scientist, Yellow, Speed of Sound, In my Place, Fix You, Viva la Vida, (possibly) Don't Panic...that's a lot, especially for a band with only four albums.

Lets put it this way, the tour dates over here are almost all SOLD OUT, some in under 30 mins.

and even with little airplay....they sell out venues

i actually haven't heard of them until a couple minutes ago, they're ok i guess

I would say they beat u2 over here, at least among most people I know. I would say they are the most widely popular group.

I agree about the chart thing. Its interesting to me because even now they get little to know airplay in my home town, but their huge. I really think they just put out such solid albums that people don't even bother with singles and just go straight for the whole thing. And thats rare, I cant tell you the last time I found a group that put out such brilliant albums, not just crap filler with 2 or 3 sugary sweet songs.

both bands are huge, but I don't think u2's next album will sell as much as viva la vida. They've kind of graduated the pop world.

well when i was in the ambulance with my friend being taken from the today show... the guy in the ambulance said he had never heard of them! haha... but i dont think that's a reflection of the whole country. mostly everyone can at least associate them with clocks or something and they are one of the only decent bands that make it onto mainstream stations.

In the words of the Beatles:

"Bigger than Jesus."

Really??? They deserve it!...but I can't see the appeal of U2, there not that good.... (I DON'T WANT TO START A BIG THING NOW, AGAINST ME NOT LIKING U2, lol)

U2 are up there with the Beatles.

After the today show Id say they are pretty damn popular. Even more so now that all the morining TV watchers got a chance to witness their awesomeness...

U2 are up there with the Beatles.

I wouldn't go that far. I think if they stopped after the early 90s, they would've had the icon status of The Beatles many years later. But they have gone on way pass their prime to be like The Beatles. Who knows though, maybe in 20 years when they aren't together anymore and they become more classic, it might be different. Coldplay is on their way to being a U2 type of band, I think. They just don't have the many years of experience of U2, so I definitely think 15 years from now they'll be up there with U2.

im starting to think that here in uruguay i am the only one who loves coldplay:(

Well, they have the Answer to Life, the Universe, and Everything in their latest album (which must have taken some deep thought to come up with), so of course they're big; almost as big as space. But they're mostly harmless. :D

They really arent bigger than Jesus, Ive just always wanted to say that.:P
