Coldplay: The Beatles of our Generation?

Featured Replies

In a recent radio station in the philippines I heard a DJ saying that she agrees with some people saying that coldplay is the "beatles of our generation" and I just thought this would be a great thread for coldplaying. Vote in the poll for your opinions and state why.... just a short statement thats all. thnx::cool:

Trivia:

---From wikipedia.org Artists who have topped both the official album and singles chart for Billboard in the United States and The Official UK Charts Company from the United Kingdom (also the BPI). Currently, as of 2008, seven artists have achieved this: The Beatles, The Monkees, Simon and Garfunkel, Rod Stewart, Men at Work, Beyoncé Knowles and Coldplay.

--- besides coldplay are one of the biggest bands of the 00's all their albums have generated greatly commercial success and selling tons of millions of albums in every release

---- their music is just outstanding and connects with a wide wide audience worldwide

- --- Their singles Speed of sound, Viva la vida is one of the only British Rock bands to hit the US top 10 (#8 and #1 respectively) since The Beatles in the 1960's

-- It is rare to have a Brit Band to have a whoppping 700,000+ average in the first week of release for 2 consecutvie times (X&Y and Viva)

Yup. They are indeed a "fab four" in every way imaginable.

No way, musically there are similarities.

In scale wise Coldplay's never done anything that innovative, or special, nobody knows who they are (except Chris Martin) and the fanbase they do have is not as dedicated as the Beatles was.

There will never be the conditions for another band to be the next Beatles, no band can have so many no1's in the charts their competing with themselves.

I agree I don't think they are the beatles. I mean I love them but I THInk they are just... Coldplay

I don't think so.. I really really like coldplay.. but they haven't changed the music industry in any way as the beatles did..

I agree with Lore, I don't think anyone will ever be able to come up to the Beatles

Anyway, I agree that Coldplay is one of the best bands of our generation ;)

No, not at all. Our generation isn't capable of having our own Beatles.

Coldplay do tick one or two of the boxes, but there are a lot of boxes to tick. A new Beatles could only happen in an emerging genre where there is a lot of room for innovation and in a world that hasn't had it's tastes split up and polarized by the internet.

Considering I don't like The Beatles (don't shoot me) and I'm a huge Coldplay fan....then I hope not lol!

I think they mean in terms of impact and success.

Oh, well....maybe. It might be too early to tell.

Maybe not The Beatles...but more so U2. I could see them being more of the 'U2' of now, even though U2 is still quite popular these days. I probably don't make sense, but I hope you all know what I mean...

oh please!!!!! The Beatles? They are legends, coldplay arn't.

They have the potential, and are slowly finding their feet as this gen's u2, but they're too young to even be compared with the beatles considering their longevity. Check back ten years from now, and might have a different answer for you, but now it's a stretch.

I don't think they have the potential... I mean.. there's a lot of bands as famous as coldplay and with more sells... Coldplay haven't done anything new (and I'm not saying this as a hater or something)... they're great and I love them but still.. I don't think there'll be any band as the beatles... not now and probably not in the future either...

the beatles didn't just changed the music in their time... they changed all the music history.. and are still a big influence in the music world... I don't think any band could do this now...

I don`t think we'll be celebrating the release of a coldplay album 40 years later as Sgt pepper's or

something like that

Indeed, I personally think give it 30 years Coldplay will be about as big as R.E.M (there will have well known classics, but overall be kinda under the radar) are now. Not as big as the Beatles for sure.

Remember the Beatles had so many songs in the charts they were competiting with themselves, they came along at the dawn of the age of celebrity. Before video games, computers, internet. They were as quintesensial to life as reading litrature was in the 1800's. The climate has completely changed in the world, a new Beatles could never happen.

ohhh I think they'll be like REM too!

The reception of my thread is outstanding I love all your opinions and its not rubbish .keep it coming.!! I think Coldplay may have changed the music in the 00's a bit. with all the piano s and stuff, and a new burst of soft rock.... maybe yeah in the next 10 yrs we may see them as legends of rock:)

I think the only way we'd be able to see that is to wait and look back 10 years from now. Coldplay still have a long career in front of them, while the Beatles aren't even together anymore.

i think it's also important to note how quickly the beatles achieved so much... (aside from their solo efforts) if i'm not mistaken, they were only a band for 10 years max... so even if it were possible for there to be a beatles of our generation (and i'm not so sure that it is), coldplay have already reached the 10-year mark... but i agree with many of the above comments... coldplay are operating in a completely different world to the 1960s... as interesting as any comparison might be, now or 10 years from now, it's certainly never going to be an 'all else equal' comparison...

there cannot be a beatles of any generation in the genre of rock music. there would have to be a major shift in a musical style for their to be a new beatles, and if that was the case, i'm not sure anyone would consider the person/band the beatles because it was a different genre.

i think of it like this, and im not being religious lol, i just think of it like this now that this topic is brought forward

the beatles are like god, they did it all, no one can be like god (and this is not me being religious, if you are or arent dont matter, this is strictly comparison that i think everyone will get my point)

bands like coldplay, u2, radiohead, rem, etc are just like great people in comparison to a god. they dont have the influence of god, but in basic structure theyre pretty damn good.

no matter how innovative anyone is, the beatles created a genre. they are the beatles for fucks sake! lol

and i like more coldplay songs than beatles songs, but coldplay have not created a genre, if anything they havent really created any extension at all. they havent pushed the boundries. theyre fucking brilliant no doubt, dont get me wrong. but they cannot be the beatles.

no matter how great a band is, no ones the beatles. theres got to be a new religion (as in genre folks) for their too be a new beatles.

The Beatles' music is so awesome, that The Beatles are The Beatles of our generation. They may not have made any music lately, but their music is new to every ear that hears it for the first time, and for my generation, I don't think anyone since has had such an impact on music for the die-hard or occasional music listener.

Having said that, not since my early memories of hearing my parents' Beatles records have I felt so passionately about a band's music as I do Coldplay's music. And when I have kids, one of their first musical memories will be of hearing their mum's Coldplay cd's and vinyl singles.

(excerpt from a conversation with myt bro) "it's weird...because coldplay are 8 years old, still very young compared to u2, radiohead, the beatles, REM etc. yet they're immediately compared and matchups to these much older bands. They are rarely compared to band's they're own age...and then I think...what other band's from this decade can they be compared to? the killers? the strokes? muse (for those who protest, muse are fantastic but have had little or no impact in the U.S.), the arctic monkeys...? etc. etc. etc. yet none of these band's are anywhere near as successful and big as coldplay. One could make a case that some of these bands like sigur ros or others are better than coldplay, but as far as widespread u2/radiohead-esque success goes. I can't think of many bands from this decade that can even compete with coldplay. nirvana, radiohead and all those are essentially 90s bands. But as far as I'm concerned, there's nothing preventing coldplay from ending up on the bottom of a 2010 VH1 "greatest bands of the 2000's" countdown. No contest methinks. considering how huge and consistently sensational they've been from square one all over the globe."

I went on to say it was kind of disconcerting that there doesn't seem to be any real oasis's, nirvana's, radiohead's etc. in this decade as there was in the 90s. Many solid band's but it feels like we're in a musical lull, free of any real domineering bands of that sort. I mean, we're in an age where coldplay is second to "I kissed a girl in I liked it"...status of "biggest band in the world" doesn't seem half as impressive as it would in previous decades.
