Featured Replies

Am i predictable or what?, 42 posts so far I have done, all in relation to Coldplay being related to U2 or The Beatles. But I wasn't surprised to see your name either.

The mistake people make is to think Coldplay haven't been making music as long as The Beatles did. The Beatles were a band for about as long as Coldplay, and look at what they did.

No one can be The Beatles. I mean it's really just not possible. It's got nothing to do with how good they are or how popular. Until we get some new kind of music, there are no new beatles.

I mean, when The Beatles got turned down by some record companies who said something to the effect of "Guitars are dead". The Beatles revolutionized the music world and industry. Coldplay can't do that because they didn't come first. There would be no Coldplay without The Beatles, so you can't say Coldplay are the next Beatles.

In my opinion, the two things that separate Coldplay and The Beatles are universal appeal and songwriting.

In terms of universal appeal, The Beatles were, and always will be, likable by nearly everyone. No matter where you go, there are Beatles fans all around you.

The Beatles produces tons of hit singles within a 10 year period, Coldplay just got their first ever #1.

In my opinion, Coldplay makes better music than the Beatles. Is Coldplay a greater band? No. Will they ever be? I hope so.

well, problem is it's virtually impossible to come across a universally appealing band like the beatles were nowadays, I'm not even sure how the beatles would fair in today's music market. There's so much divide in culture, genre etc., and considering the circumstances, Coldplay has some of the most globally appealing music of the decade.

i'd eat my hat if they'd break up...

(I saw a girl do that when the beatles announced their split)

Coldplay is by far the best band out NOW, but they didn't change music, and pop culture in general like the Beatles did...

Coldplay is by far the best band out NOW.

that's very subjective...

^its completely subjective.

Lets just say they are one of the best bands of a generation.

Whats with the myth The Beatles created a genre?

The Beatles happened to stand out from a music scene where guitar pop first appeared. They then innovated the concept, produced lots of timeless music and took influences from everywhere and everything.

They did not invent rock and roll, they just happened to be at the right place at the right time, yet also incredibly talented.

If Coldplay was placed in that situation, I doubt they could of succeeded, theres no real charasma compared to that of the Beatles.

i think that Coldplay are legends.

And Chris Martin's lyrics makes my life perfect.

Beatles Successors.

There will never be another Beatles in any generation.

Coldplay is the current band that would remind me most of the Beatles. Musically , that is . I love them as much as I love the Beatles . I was probably about 7 years old when I heard my first Beatles song. I was 47when I first heard Coldplay . Ihave seen them 4 times since, and have almost every single , Cd , Poster , Magazine cover and whatever since. Their inspiration from the Beatles is obvious . Yes , they are already legends . Chris always mentions Paul MCcartney and He is the daring John Lennon musically of our time . Comparisons ? Unnecessary. Similarities ? Numerous . Musical Magic and Wizardry ? Constant . I grew up with Beatles and Love them dearly . But Coldplay I listen to every Day and Night .

I would say no, The Beatles defined a generation, they changed music and they are still popular today.

Coldplay are a good band, but they don't define a generation, they haven't really added anything to the music landscape

No way... Coldplay is a very very very good band, Beatles is the most important band of all time (not the best IMO, but the most important).

i think for the first time since the 1950s we're not going to have an era defining band/artist. the 50s had elvis, the 60s had beatles, the 70s had led zeppelin, the 80s had U2 and the 90s had nirvana. but this decade we've had such a huge range of genre's being popular on the charts its impossible to pick out one, two or even three bands that stand out at least not in the same fashion that the bands mentioned above did in their respective periods.

now getting back to coldplay. if the band had continued the simultaneous mainstream and alternative popularity of the first two albums then maybe i would say they are the stand out band of the decade. if they had completely changed the music scene (much like radiohead have been for the past decade) then maybe i would say they are some what era-defining. the bands lack of chemistry and musicianship doesn't help either. nor does the fact that linkin park have outsold then in the 2000s (45 million to about 35). and their last two albums haven't really received all that much critical acclaim (not that anybody cares).

so theres about 4 reasons why coldplay arent the beatles of our generation. simply cos nobody is, personally i think the white stripes, muse and arctic monkeys (and silverchair on the aussie front) are worthy contenders along side coldplay.

and Lore agree with you 100% on what you said before.

Coldplay is The THIRD BAND

1- Beatles

2- U2

3- Coldplay

After Coldplay, the cycle is concluded and a new cycle begins.

Now, what is the purpose of the cycle?

"The Ethereal Connection: a Synthesis of U2 and The Beatles"

Think About It

I saw this thread, and I was getting ready to post this exact same link before reading the thread all the way through. Glad I didn't double post.

To be honest, I'm actually a huge U2 fan and second a Coldplay fan. I've known about this connection for quite some time. It's pretty freaky to read, but I never believed in having Coldplay as part of the cycle.

Before Viva La Vida I was a simple casual fan of Coldplay. I have all of their albums, but they are collecting dust on my shelf. I've always thought of Coldplay as just another popular band and never at the level of the Beatles or U2...until now.

Viva La Vida has totally blown me away!!! I listen to the whole album at least once a day. I'm starting to become obsessed...like I am with U2...it's scary!!! Of course one of the things that has come to mind lately is this cycle that I've known about for a couple of years. Then I got really scared thinking it might be really happening where as before I would have thought you were crazy!

But you have to remember there is now a U2/Coldplay connection thanks in part by Brian Eno. I think if it wasn't for him to step up and help produce Coldplay's latest album, I think Coldplay would still be in the same place chart wise and how I personally feel about them. And of course Chris Martin is saying this is their "Unforgettable Fire." And that might be true! Because U2 didn't become really popular until UF was released. Thinking back, it wasn't until the mid 80's until I heard my first U2 song on the radio which was around the time UF was released. From that point, U2's UF like Coldplay's Viva La Vida, hit the charts big time.

Of course, like others have said, only time will tell, but IMO, things seem to be falling into place.

Remember U2 will have no choice but to pass the torch, but it's not going to be very soon since they signed a 12 year deal with Live Nation. Plus too U2 has been quoted to saying "we make two crap albums and we're out." Well folks, that hasn't exactly happened yet. FYI - I have downloaded and heard the song clips from the beach near Bono's mansion where he cranked up during a party 4 brand new U2 songs from their new album that won't be released until November...and I have to tell you...U2 is going to be hard to beat. The songs I heard were better than anything off of the Bomb album or from their previous album ATYCLB.

Basically what I'm saying is that Coldplay has a very long road ahead of them, and for this cycle to happen, they have to stick it out for the long haul.

But since I'm now a huge fan of both U2 and Coldplay, I'm giddy as a school girl here in 2008.

Plus too, the bad side to this is my credit card is loving me right now being both a huge fan of U2 and Coldplay. :dizzy2:

  • 2 weeks later...
no one will ever be exactly what the beatles were, but if it could be anyone its coldplay
Mr. Winigwl ....

VERY NICELY SAID .. !!

I think Coldplay is definitely what I call a "20-year" band. That is, a band that only comes around every 20 years or so. The 60s had the Beatles (or some would argue the Stones), the 80s had U2, and now we have CP. There's something special about them that sets them apart from their contemporaries.

Allegra, just very happy to read your post, glad that in your mind i went from crazy to vindicated. It might seem freaky to some, but I have been working on this for 15 years, and will keep on doing the same for the next 15 as well, apparently. The version of the website currently on the web (http://www.TheEtherealConnection.com) was launched in 2005, I have no idea when the next version is going to come out (too busy sustaining my family) , but it would have to be completely different, because Coldplay has ti be included. Any ideas?

well, personally i think they're better than the beatles.

but don't get me wrong, the beatles are my second favorite band. i looove them!!

but yeah, i'd say they fit into that genre. "the beatles of our generation". :P

The Beatles' music is so awesome, that The Beatles are The Beatles of our generation. They may not have made any music lately, but their music is new to every ear that hears it for the first time, and for my generation, I don't think anyone since has had such an impact on music for the die-hard or occasional music listener.

Having said that, not since my early memories of hearing my parents' Beatles records have I felt so passionately about a band's music as I do Coldplay's music. And when I have kids, one of their first musical memories will be of hearing their mum's Coldplay cd's and vinyl singles.

i completely agree with everything you said. as much as i'd love to honestly say that coldplay are the beatles of our generation, i really don't think they are. it's such a different dynamic with fanbase, musical innovation, the time we live in, and the simple fact that coldplay can't be the beatles because the beatles exist. nothing will ever be the beatles again. U2 is the next best thing, and coldplay after that, but i truly don't believe there will be a large-scale mass mania over a band even remotely resembling what the beatles again ever again in history. music is too diverse these days, with so many more genres and so many more artists in each of those genres that we're all so innundated and overstimualted with musical acts that it's pretty much impossible for one act to universally please like the beatles did. there have been so many bands these days that have made huge advances in musical innovation, but not in any way that remotely touches the beatles.

as much as i love both bands to death, i love them for different reasons, and i think that no matter how much bigger and more impressive coldplay get in the years to come, they or anyone else will ever really touch the beatles.

They have the potential, and are slowly finding their feet as this gen's u2, but they're too young to even be compared with the beatles considering their longevity. Check back ten years from now, and might have a different answer for you, but now it's a stretch.

Actually when the beatles broke up, Most of them were in their 26-29's

So Coldplay is too old to be even compared to the beatles considering their longetivity

I do love Colplay, believe me I do... But the Beatles can never be compared to anyone... it's like comparing apples and oranges the only thin they have in common are that they are both fruit. The only thing Coldplay and the Beatles have in common is that they are both form the UK!! :)

Beatlemania.

Lets Remember , One of the biggest factors in what determines a legend or legends . And that is timing . The Beatles were incubating in the early sixties and actually started to break the charts in early '63 . Their domination of the charts and Invasion on the U.S.A. came at a time when we needed Heroes of any kind . We had just lost our beloved John Fitzgerald Kennedy , and were still hurting . Their mastering of the Pop Sound , The Big Beat , The Hit after Hit after Hit , made us all feel good and able to move on . They were more than loveable , from another country with different looks and different accents , They were here to stay , for their time ,and influenced , Band after Band , and Created a whole new social atmosphere that allowed the Sixties to evolve the way that it did . They left their footprint not only in the music world , But in the fashion and political and Spiritual world and yes , even the Comic world . They were in my eyes , having grown up with them , the Four greatest musicians/ songwriters who ever walked the earth. ( Mac is in the Guiness book of World Records for song writing . ) U-2 were awesome .. Thats that. I hope their new album brings them back and I'm sure it will . We named my 17 year old son /Drummer /Guitarist after the JOSHUA Tree. My favorite is Achtung Baby. Radiohead ? I know one song by them . Coldplay , Tell all your nearsayer friends to get a hold of B sides , any of their early stuff , or just listen to the OTHER Songs on the Albums , Not just the ones the radio beats to death.. Then just take in ONE of their LIVE Shows .. Guess what Rock and Roll Fans , They RULE the Roost . Their will never be another Beatles . But, Their will never be another COLDPLAY either.. Joey.

To be a legend is to outlive ur career, so the question is, will Coldplay outlive their career?

The Beatles definitely did, U2 WILL do.....& in my opinion, Coldplay will too.....
