COLDPLAY LIVING LA VIDA AT Q AWARDS

Coldplay reconfirmed their status as a major player in the British music scene by scooping two of the most prestigious prizes at this year's Q Awards at the Grosvenor House Hotel in London today.

Frontman Chris Martin and the other members won the Best Album award for 'Viva La Vida or Death And All His Friends', as well as the honour for being Best Act in the World Today.

With ample warning to the assembled audience, Martin embarked upon a rambling acceptance speech, proclaiming Coldplay to be the "greatest band in the world", before adding humbly that "U2 are on holiday".

The wit and wisdom of Coldplay .....

Double award winners Coldplay wowed the crowds with some of the best on-stage gags and speeches of the awards

As drummer Will Champion collected the award for best act in the world, he responded to Adam Ant’s crack that the band had stolen their sartorial ideas from him. “Thanks to Q for inviting Adam Ant and making us all look like f***ing w***ers,” Champion said.

Chris Martin made it clear that he still carried a torch for Cerys Matthews, despite being married to one of the world’s most famous actresses. After collecting the best act title, Martin said: “About eight years ago we supported Catatonia and you let me hold your cigarette. I thought ‘maybe there is a chance’.”

Unlucky in love Cerys shot back: “There is a chance!”

After hearing that David Gilmour and Rick Wright had wanted to play Glastonbury, Martin took a swipe at Noel Gallagher’s Jay-Z dissing comments earlier in the year.

Martin told guest: “Pink Floyd at Glastonbury? I’m not having that.

Chatting to a reporter on the red carpet, Martin joked: "You should never count your chickens before they've been put in a KFC." Asked what the band would be doing next, he said: " Opening a restaurant and a couple of farms."

Coldplay's Chris Martin was at the ceremony with the band

Coldplay have scooped two prizes at the Q Awards ceremony in London, including best album for Viva La Vida or Death To All His Friends.

The band, fronted by Chris Martin, also won best act in the world today.

Welsh star Duffy won best breakthrough, while Keane picked up best track for comeback song Spiralling.

The music magazine also honoured veteran artists including Grace Jones, who was named Q idol, and Glen Campbell, winner of the legend award.

Picking up the best album prize, Chris Martin warned the crowd he was going to bore them, before launching into a rambling acceptance speech.

At one point, he declared Coldplay were "the greatest band in the world", before adding bashfully: "U2 are on holiday".

When Martin returned to receive the best act in the world today award, he said: "I don't think we're the best act in the room, let alone the world."

Empty-handed

Meat Loaf was presented with the classic song award for his epic Bat Out Of Hell.

The singer turned up at the ceremony sporting a cut eye and looking unwell, telling reporters he would have to visit a doctor because he was suffering from vertigo.

He left the ceremony soon after picking up his award from comedian Al Murray.

The Cocteau Twins were honoured by the magazine with a prize for inspiration.

The band's Liz Fraser told the ceremony: "This is the first award we've ever won."

Pink Floyd's David Gilmour, meanwhile, was honoured with the outstanding contribution to music award and dedicated it to bandmate Richard Wright, who died last month.

He proposed a toast to the late keyboardist, and said the band had wanted to perform at an outdoor festival.

When accepting his award for Q icon, Adam Ant said: "It's good to be standing here. It's very good to be standing, actually."

Kaiser Chiefs gave their best live act trophy to their manager, while Vampire Weekend's A Punk was judged best video.

But the New York band lost out in the best new act category to The Last Shadow Puppets, and were also overlooked for best album in favour of Coldplay.

The Ting Tings were shortlisted in three categories, but left the ceremony empty-handed.

Both nominees and winners were selected by readers of the monthly music magazine.

Oh it did ! :stunned: almighty Mich !
