X&Y - lets squash the myth

It's a good album, but incredibly uncreative.

in what sense? see everyone has these vague answers...no one is giving me any concrete reason

X&Y contains 3 of my 5 favorite coldplay songs (Swallowed in the Sea, What If and Fix You also love Til Kingdom Come)

The thing about it is, as an album, I don't sit down to listen to X&Y. I could listen to AROBTHT or VLV in one sitting and they stand alone as works of art. X&Y is great to listen to the couple of songs that you love. But there are songs that will almost always be skipped! I can't say the same for any of the other three.

I skip songs on all there other albums...doesnt mean that it makes the albums deserve less merit

OK I think that X&Y does have some very similar songs, but I like the spacey feel to it...

A short review...

1.SQUARE ONE - One of my favorite Coldplay songs ever. Such an amazing starter. I wish to hear this live, and it should have been a single instead of Speed of Sound IMO. A true Coldplay track, unbelievably moving and out-of-this-world.

2.WHAT IF Might sound like a Scientist rip-off, but it's really really beautiful. The text is really nice. The only thing I don't like are too many choruses at the end of the song.

3.WHITE SHADOWS At first I really liked the song, but now I am kind of bored by it a bit now. But maybe that's just NOW, as I really think it is a nice song as well.

4.FIX YOU HATED IT at start. But now I really really love it. I can't wait to hear it live. The arrangement in the song is beautiful and the text is like this wonderful ODE to friendship... When I learned what it's about, God, I loved it even more...

5.TALK One of the rare songs I liked from Coldplay at the start. It's a good song, really. Love the lyrics, and I think he is talking to God? Or no? Prefer this to White Shadows, though.

6.X&Y Seemed whatever to me, but now... well it is a great song for being with someone you love, and just lying in the dark, watching each other and "floating into outer space"... Love the end.

7.SPEED OF SOUND My least favorite Coldplay song, next to Chinese Sleep Chant. Too boring and a rip-off of Clocks, which is one of my fav songs... And I HATE that this song was a single...

8.A MESSAGE I know many people like it, but to me it's rather boring.

9.LOW Same thing I guess.

10.HARDEST PART Didn't really like it. But it's OK now I guess. The video creeped me out a bit, but the song itself is nice :) I don't understand why they released it as a single if they hated it though...

11.SWALLOWED IN THE SEA Like X&Y, a wonderful love song... A dreamer in me wakes up (lol) whenever I hear this song... "a song a thousand miles long" - amazing.

12.TWISTED LOGIC This song is creepy in a way, it makes me scared about what future may bring. But it's interesting, I guess. Can pass.

13.TIL KINGDOM COME Didn't like it. Kinda country. But I do like it now. Really. Nice closer.

So , all in all, IMO - a decent album. Not my least fav either. I don't think I have a most and least fav album - I like how they all differ. The only thing I can say that I don't like about this album are similar tracks. Which can't be said for VLV as it consists of ALL different tracks.

So yeah...

WHAT IF - How is what If a scientist rip-off? just because it includes a piano? I guess we could say that about 42 as well lol The end is amazing because it just culminates to an amazing eruption....like an orgasm lol

FIX YOU - One of the most beautiful peices of harmony I have ever heard.

SPEED OF SOUND - once again why is it a rip-off of clocks? because it has a piano riff?

X&Y is a great album. It just wasn't anything new from them, thats why it drew criticism.

Fix You - not overrated at all. Just because you don't like doesn't mean it's a bad song. It's a great song and you can tell there was a lot of musical thought put into it. At the concert I went to, it was probably one of the best songs played because of the energy that just exuded out of the band and the audience. It was remarkable. And when you know why the song was written, it definitely adds more meaning. Chris called it the most important song he had written.

Speed of Sound - Also a good song. I don't see how you can say its a Clocks rip off except for the fact that they have somewhat similar drumbeats, yet still different. Sorry. Good song. Deserved to be a single. Very powerful.

Obviously everybody has their own opinions, but there are reasons why these two songs were popular.

X&Y has some fantastic songs, but it was overproduced.

I get that a lot of people really love it, and I totally respect that. It's still worlds better than most pop music out there, so it doesn't surprise me that fans would get into the band through it and would care for it a lot. And if you happen to like that dense poppy style of production you might, like many people, even think it's their best album, and that's fair. ;)

But like people have said, it's the one album that I don't sit down with a book and get lost in. I never listen to it all in one go. I don't connect to it in the way that I connect to their other albums (and even b-sides) on some visceral emotional level that sinks down into my subconscious in a way I'm not sure how to describe. I always like acoustic versions of the songs off it better, when there aren't so many unnecessary layers and synths so that the bones of the song can really shine through.

The recent performance of the Hardest Part is a perfect example. It's my least favorite Coldplay song ever, pretty much, but when it was just Chris and a piano with a different pace and focus, all the little hairs on my neck stood on end and the song opened up in a way it never had before. It was brilliant. If the album version had been like that- if the album had been like that, I would have liked it. Goodness, even the special radio single mix of "What If" was better than the album version. It's almost the same, but those subtle little inexplicable things make a huge difference.

And maybe that was just it. Being a fan for a while meant knowing what was missing once I got my head around the album. It's sort of like how a person who only ever listens to an ipod thinks the sound is fine, while someone who routinely listens to an expensive high-end stereo system would notice what the ipod was messing up. Viva la Vida is the album that I had hoped X&Y would be- full of life, big one moment and acousticy the next, still Coldplay but fresh and adventurous and growing as a band. In fact I never thought this possible since AROBTTH is my favorite album of all time, but I think I love VLV more than anything else they've done so far. :shocked2: It was all just a blip, a growth pain, (an understandable one considering how fast they've grown) and now the best side of the band is back. :D

Hooray for Coldplay!!!

X&Y is my favourite Coldplay album. Better than all of them. In fact X&Y is my 5th favourite album of all time. So there.

I love X&Y. I do think it was different than the first two albums and that they took several steps forward and in new directions, and I listen to it all the way through all the time. Unfortunately for me Viva La Vida is my least favorite venture from the band thus far, but I still think its a decent piece of work. I just feel they took some of the aspects I enjoyed most about the band and eliminated them, and in there place have a sound far closer to that of U2 and Arcade Fire, neither of which I'm a big fan of. So I guess in my opinion in a lot of ways this new record seems less adventurous & more conforming to current music trends than X&Y, so to each their own.

i think my main criticisms was that x & y was coldplay being coldplay and not being a band. i think they were recycling ideas that were coldplay but weren't extending upon themselves. i obviously like songs on the album. it was the first album i could anticipate coming out because i got a rush of blood to the head after it came out without knowing anything about the band.

i also think the over produced criticism is the most relevant. i think some bands can get away with such things as its up their alley, but I don't think coldplay is one of those bands. i think they point subpar songs on the album because the band couldnt decide properly. i know this will happen on any album, but they talk about it so much for x & y i imagine it was increased.

see people say this album lacked soul and heart. i think because chris martin's writing the lyrics the lyrics will always have that in some manner, but i think the music lost its soul and heart. very few songs properly encapsulated the emotional context. i think what if is one of those songs. it has lyrical potential but no music to make it great.

x & y for me really has few songs i come back to. i think all albums you like initially prove they are good albums, but i think what proves an album to be great is how much you come back to it. for me its almost not happening. i have to get myself to listen to it in all honesty. it seems almost boring to me, like someone said. its an album slightly devoid of life.

and just to let everyone know who thinks im just bashing, fix you, the hardest part (yes i know) and swallowed in the sea are some of my favorite coldplay songs.

lol starting to see a pattern here...ppl who enjoyed X&Y didnt like VLVDAAHF that much. For me both albums are brilliant

OK from wat i can tell the mass "opinion" is that X&Y had some great songs but lacks as a full album.....Also the factor of over-production draws into the mix.

hm interesting

Goodness, even the special radio single mix of "What If" was better than the album version. It's almost the same, but those subtle little inexplicable things make a huge difference.

I knew What If was released a single in some countries, but I had no idea it was different! Any chance of a link to this please?

I think I must be the only person that cannot listen to AROBTTH in one sitting. It's too long. A Whisper doesn't fit at all. Daylight does nothing for me; it's a filler. The actual running order is pants. There. I said it.

AMEN TO THAT!!!!!:smug:

Dude I think both albums are great too!!!!

Basically everything is great!!!!

I got to agree w you X&Y wasnt bad, in fact its a great album...... but not as great as parachutes or AROBTTH .People just put coldplay on sucha high pedistal that they expect every album to be majestic and amazing. I guess X&Y didnt match with many expectations...... but its still a great album ..... So people set high standards for Every coldplay so tahts just the thing it wasnt weak, at all its just didnt match the preceding albums that they have made but still an album to Look out for , and its great

To be honest I don't know what they are going on about, saying that x&y was there downfall?

It produced Fix You which was played endlessly everywhere you went and Speed of Sound and Talk.

But the songs that weren't released as singles were brilliant too. I don't get it? Each song had meaning, individuality, passion and beauty. They shouldn't be bringing down X&Y when artists of today should be using it as an example, of what music capabilities are and what they should aspire to

And yeah Sometimes I love X&Y sometimes I dont. I just dont get me. SOme days i like to listen to parachutes or AROBTTH it varies........ But mostly i listen TO VLV 's singles I dont have the album yet...... but im pllaanning to. I think VLV is going to exciting
