seriously, why wont they say what videos were chosen to be shown to the band? they may not have had very good choices..

i will never understand the winner elected.

And if that video was really shown in youtube before the contest started,it can´t be the winner, are the rules.you know how long does it takes to produce a video like this??Not a week.

And, both videos were made by professionals....that´s stupid to select these two videos as the winners, why a fan contest??

My opinion is that many other videos as the SOCKS one ,really represent the work and feelings of a real COLDPLAY fan.

COLDPLAY and the people at the website really took a very bad decision for lots of people´s dreams.

:( :( :(

though, it was fun doing the video.

I hope at least Guy or some Coldplay crew who smoke was able to watch my vid.

I like the winner's video. The runner-up is great too. Those weren't my favourites, but they are great!

I'm glad this is over now. I hated my video, and hope I will do better in future.

wow, lots of angry ppl.

pinata_smasher: have you considered that it isn't politics? that they perhaps genuinely liked the winning video (which they prolly did, seeing as they chose it). The video was sweet and even if the person who made it is a professional, it doesn't mean he put any less effort into it as anyone else did, he prolly put more considering all the little details that are in it.

also, those who think the winning vid sucks must be watching a different video than me. But honestly, a lot of the videos ppl have posted in this thread (mine included) are not that great (of course, I've seen some wonderful ones too). I think I've honestly seen about 8/10 of the entries online and 7.5/10 of them were/are pretty bad.

Correct me if I misunderstood the contest, but my understanding was it was a fan video on a shoestring budget.

Both these entries are technically brilliant, there's no doubting that, but in both cases they've obviously had thousands of € / $ chucked at them. When you film with professional equipment costing thousands of £, of course you're going to get better results that someone with a basic camcorder. Add to that the superiority of professional editing software like Final Cut (which isn't cheap) etc etc and suddenly you have a different ball game entirely.

Perhaps the context of the competition was ambiguous, but chances are I wouldn't have entered if I thought I was up against professional filmmakers who do it for a living. The outcome is obvious.

If Coldplay's objective in the long term is a break away from their record label and this was an exercise to find a filmaker for them for their future vidoes, I don't have a problem with that. In fact, it was a smart move on their part because they saved time interviewing and looking over portfolios etc, not to mention any recruitment fees too.

However, it was a bit unfair to compare mulit thousand dollar productions with those costing a few hundred at best, if that. Surely they should have had several categories, best fan video, best professional video, best technical, best idea? Then everyone would have been happy.

Having 24 hours to reflect and the dust to settle, from a technical standpoint the winner is superb; however, I really don't think it has a good narrative at all. The Socks video does, as do countless other fan videos I've seen. In addition, it's been pointed out it was made before the competition opened, so they weren't subject to all the time constraints and rushing the rest of us were. They're comparing apples with oranges.

The runner up is great both technically and in narrative and fits the album ideas very well. Why this didn't come first I can't imagine (given that both are professional) but there were other videos out there with similar narratives done on a much smaller budget.

My gripe isn't I didn't win, but that they choose not one, but two professional videos. Even if we didn't win, it would have been nice to have seen a fellow fan winning it,: an ordinary fan done good. A lot of dreams died yesterday.

The competition was looking for the best fan made video, so I don't think based on that, that the videos were limited to being made on a 'shoestring budget.'

Personally, I think that they could have approached this competition much better by having different age groups, pro/amateur and all of that. But I think their intentions were to make this an open, organic competition in that the only stipulation was that it had to be an original video (and that the best one would be chosen).

I also do not think that the winning video (or even the one that came in second place) had the best narratives, but then again it wasn't up to me to decide who won. Even so, some videos are more visual than narrative, and can be equally as great so what sort of value do you place on each and what should decide the winning video?

My gripe is that people are getting upset at the winners when they could actually be real fans. And it's been said that the video was made before the competition- but by who? Mostly (I suppose) just people speculating.

That link has to do with the other claymation video by Miles K.

The winning one is by Paul O'brien.

I've (of course) thought about the fact that his video may have been made before hand but then there are a load of possibilities:

-maybe he has started the video and saw this as a good opportunity to finish it

-perhaps he already had the models made and then decided to piece everything together

-and other reasons...

the point is, it'd be unfair for me to make any kind of assumption

Quite possibly, may explain rubbish narrative.

Q. Dear Oracle,

thousands of people are very very dessapointed with the winners of Lost? video contest.

Did you know that the winner was posted in youtube before the contest started????

Did you know that both videos have been done by professionals????

Why COLDPLAY have done a fan video competition if the winners are not fans?????

we really really don't understand how the winner has been selected and think this competition has been very unfair, politically manipulated and feel very very dissapointed with the band.

Lots of videos were better than the winner and were really done by a COLDPLAYER.

The Oracle replies:

Who says they are not fans? I have to strongly disagree.

The winning films were not posted before the competition started, a professional may have filmed one but that doesn't mean he's not a HUGE Coldplay fan. I think it is grossly unfair of people to assume the winners are not fans when both indeed are. I don't know how or why people are coming to that conclusion.

The competition was totally fair with no hidden agenda, politics or otherwise. Each video was viewed and judged on its merits. No other considerations were taken into account. A shortlist of 30 films was drawn up (this course of action was explained in the terms & conditions). The band all watched the final shortlisted videos and selected their winner.

You are entitled to the opinion that there were better videos but we do not share that opinion even though the standard was high and there were many exceptional entries. We feel the best film won and would hope people are happy for the winner who I can assure you is absolutely thrilled to have won.

I sincerely hope that the bitterness stops.

i guess that's that people. the oracle has spoken.

Dear Oracle,

Thanks for your reply about the Lost? competiton video but about the winner(who I give my syncerely congratulations), this video can´t be made in a few days and it means that the video was produced before the competition started.

by the way, we think that many other videos which are favourites on the net deserved to win or at least any consideration as the one of the dog and the kid or the one of the Socks puppets.these kind of videos were great, made by no proffesional ones and without money or resources. And these kind of videos have put a tear in many people´s eyes because they got the song essence and the have a storyline!

these are the sort of videos we think should have won.We know life is unfair and this was just a contest, but for once the weak ones have to be recognized.

Many thanks

Regards

Marcos

I think we need to drop the issue and move on. I still agree with you about the fact it was done before the competition was opened being unfair though, but life is unfair, isn't it?
