MONACO (Reuters) - British band Coldplay was crowned the world's top-selling act of 2008 at the World Music Awards (WMAs) in Monaco.

Their latest album "Viva La Vida or Death and All His Friends," released mid-year, topped charts in the United States, Britain, Japan, Germany, France and elsewhere. Sales apparently benefited from Coldplay's marketing strategy, including giving away the first single free over the Internet for a week and staging a series of free concerts before embarking on an international tour.

The band was also named the WMA's rock act of the year at an awards ceremony, although they were not there to accept it. Beyonce and Kid Rock were among the performers on the night. The annual awards honor artists based on worldwide sales figures provided by IFPI, a London-based body representing the recording industry.

The female pop award went to Britain's Leona Lewis, who outsold Madonna and Mariah Carey, while the male pop category was won by U.S. singer Kid Rock, who released the album "Rock N Roll Jesus" late in 2007.

Troubled British singer Amy Winehouse, whose private life and battle with addiction have overshadowed her career success, was named female pop/rock act of the year, while Kid Rock made it a brace by winning the pop/rock male award.

Alicia Keys won the world's best R&B category while Lewis capped a triumphant year with the new artist prize. Lil Wayne of the United States was named world's top hip-hop/rap artist, while Senegal-born Akon was crowned biggest Internet artist of the year.

On behalf of his old band The Beatles, Ringo Starr was in Monaco to accept the diamond award, created in 2001 to honor artists who have sold more than 100 million albums during their career. According to the WMA, the Fab Four have sold more records than any other act in history, with music sales estimated by their label at more than 1 billion records worldwide.

U.S. record executive L.A. Reid also received a prize for outstanding contribution to the music industry.

Woohoo, great news! Bravo Coldplay! :D

British Acts Dominating 2008 World Music Awards Winners List

Coldplay were named the best selling artist while Leona Lewis, Estelle and Amy Winehouse also had their victories at 20th World Music Awards.

Several artists from around the world gathered in Monaco on Sunday, November 9 to witness the crowning of the best in music at the 2008 World Music Awards. The U.K. acts dominated most of the winners list. Leona Lewis took two prizes at the same time, Best New Artist and Pop Female, but it was Coldplay's night as the rock band brought home three nods.

Apart from named the world's top-selling act this year for "Viva la Vida", Coldplay also took the honor as Best Rock Group and the Best Act from Great Britain. Unfortunately the band were not there to attend the show and accept the awards. The huge sale of "Viva la Vida" proves the success of the marketing strategy that gave away the album's first single "Violet Hill" for free via the Internet.

Despite her personal life that overshadows her music, Amy Winehouse still earned the honor to take Best Pop/Rock Female, beating Pink, Duffy and Katy Perry. The Beatles' Ringo Starr meanwhile, was the special honoree of the Diamond Award, an award created in 2001 to honor artists who have sold more than 100 million albums during their career. Also, "American Boy" singer Estelle took over the Best New R&B Act.

The Americans also had their triumphs with Beyonce Knowles nabbing Outstanding Contribution to the Art, Chris Brown snatching R&B Male and Lil Wayne taking the Rap/Hip-Hop genre. Other award recipients at the event included Alicia Keys, Mariah Carey, Akon, Kid Rock, Enrique Iglesias and producer L.A. Reid.

Katy Perry opened the show while Beyonce Knowles and Kid Rock were among the performers that night. Actor Jesse Metcalfe hosted the show with Destiny's Child's Michelle Williams (II). Full winners of the 20th annual awards as well as it's delayed broadcast schedule can be found on the official site.

The World Music Awards

It was a great night for British music last night as our cream of the crop – including Amy Winehouse and Leona Lewis - scooped a host of gongs at the World Music Awards.

Although she wasn't there to personally pick up her trophies, Leona Lewis won Best Pop Female and Best New Act at the event, which was held in glamorous Monte Carlo.

Coldplay, Amy Winehouse and Ringo Starr also flew the flag for Britain, picking up Best Rock Act, Best Pop Rock Female and the Diamond Award respectively.

Ringo Starr received the Diamond Award on behalf of The Beatles for their contribution to music, and he said on stage: 'I'd like to thank my three buddies George, Paul and John.

'I had a lot of help - I couldn't have done it on my own. Peace and love.'

Other winners at the ceremony included Mariah Carey, who bagged a Lifetime Achievement Award. The star, dressed in a skintight scarlet mini, attended with her husband, Nick Cannon, who'd spent the weekend with the superstar in London while she appeared on The X Factor, before flying out to France.

It was also a successful night for Beyonce, who snapped up Best International Female, and who kick-started the show with an energetic performance of her new single.

Other celebrities who attended the bash included mum-to-be Sophie Ellis-Bextor, who looked stunning in a chartreuse dress, Alicia Keyes, who wowed in cobalt-blue, and Estelle, who also lit up the red carpet in a bright blue, one-shouldered frock.

Desperate Housewives hunk Jesse Metcalfe hosted the event, and was no doubt thrown into panic mode when co-host Denise Richards missed her flight and was left stranded in the US.

Coldplay Honoured For Selling Albums

Coldplay — safe enough for your mom, but just edgy enough to give wannabe hipsters minor cred — have used that status to become the biggest selling act around the globe.

At least that's what they were named at the 20th annual World Music Awards in Monte Carlo, Monaco on Sunday evening for their Viva La Vida Or Death And All His Friends album. Coldplay were also named rock act of the year, but weren't on hand to revel in their accolades.

Luckily for the 32,000 well-heeled residents of the tiny but extremely wealthy principality, trailer trash hero Kid Rock was present. His Rock N Roll Jesus album won him the male pop and pop/rock categories, based on sales figures provided by the International Federation Of The Phonographic Industry.

Britain's Leona Lewis received the female pop and new artist awards, while Amy Winehouse was named female pop/rock act of the year for Back To Black. Whether or not she remembers remains to be seen.

Alicia Keys' As I Am took the best R&B artist category, while Chris Brown was the top R&B male and Estelle was the best new R&B act. Lil Wayne took the hip-hop/rap category for Tha Carter III. Akon was hailed as the biggest internet artist, while Laurent Wolf is apparently the world's best DJ.

Awards were also given out to the biggest artists from individual countries, giving Canada another opportunity to proudly claim Celine Dion as its own.

Alaska governor Sarah Palin may have failed in her bid to become U.S. vice-president, but the geographically challenged hockey mom may have played a behind-the-scenes role at the WMAs. While countries like China, France, Germany, Italy (give it up for Jovanotti), Japan and others were singled out, Akon was named the top artist from Africa. Meanwhile, Tuface took the award for Nigeria. Last time I checked, Nigeria was in Africa.

Ringo Starr accepted the diamond award on behalf of The Beatles. The prize was created in 2001 to recognize artists who've sold more than 100 million albums during their career.

Lindsay Lohan, who hosted the 2006 awards show, had apparently been asked to reprise that role despite a somewhat bumbling previous performance. But that was scuttled and Jesse Metcalfe emceed the event. Who the hell is he?
