I was just wondering how many people on this forum play in a band and if so what instrument do you play? Do you do orginals or covers? both?

Last year i met with 2 guys who play music and we performed clocks in the university and after we saw that people liked it we decided to be a band and 4 months ago we moved to a house where we can play music till 5 in the morning.We bought drums and new guitars and other stuff but then we realised that our music taste is kinda different.The drummer and the lead guitar player like heavy stuff more and they are too lazy to play :\I composed like 11 songs in that 1 year and im someone who wants his songs to be perfect so i ask their help sometimes to add some things on the songs but they just dont trust themselves and they go like"Hey did you see Kirk Hammett? i wish i could write solos like he does" but they never try to compose anything.Last night i was recording a song of mine and i played the main riff and then added drums on it and then piano and then bass...As you can see im alone in the band cuz they wanna play covers all the time which i hate cuz if someone plays music he has to make his own stuff.I hope one day i will meet with someone who thinks like me and play music all day long :cry:

Awww, I feel you Onur, thats sad, I strongly hope that you find that person.

 

I actually play Bass in a band I currently mounted up with 2 of my friends, one is a bit difficult to understand, the other one, which is kinda like the creative one, makes the riffs and melodies pretty awesome, he doesn't understand nothing about what notes he is playing, but since I have more experience in music (not the instrument), I write the sheet with the notes and everything. Everything's going fine till now.

since i don't know how to open a thread can you open one after we take some time? Since i have problems about gathering the band together(although we live in the same house:lol:) I think we will need some time cuz they are too lazy to play. Even if they dont i will play myself and add some things on it so it will be like a full band cover:) any ideas bearcat? should we start with covers?

id love to be in a band, to be honest id just love to jam with some people, theres a music society on campus but ive only been playing piano and guitar for a few months and while ive been told im actually rather good i cant shake the feeling that trying to form a band is a bad idea and any normal player may get impatient or think me a bit shit in comparison to his/her years of playing

i've tried being in two bands so far and it just didn't work...right now im going solo and getting some mates to do little spots on my recordings and that..you can hear my stuff on my myspace which is in my sig :D

 

the bands i tried didn't work out for two reasons..one, they werent into practasing much which is hard when you're trying to write full and songs and that and two, some of them were too out of their faces on drink/drugs so that ruined the band :cry:

 

hopefully i will find a mccartney to my lennon soon :lol:

question, how do you guys go about finding people?

well i just got with some mates who wanted to start a band...the thing was..they were all terrible :lol: probabyl just wanted to seem cool so they could say to girls "yeah im a in a band :cool:"

 

..im only 16 so it's not as if i need a band before i get to old :p but it would be great to have one! :D

Theres no "right" way to find people. Being in a larger city with universities will help alot. Myself I kinda fell into it, was asked to play keyboard for one of my g/fs friends band, and we have since become good friends. I didn't like the style at first I just did it cause it was fun but our old guitarist left, we obtained a great vocalist (mutual friend of my g/f and I) and a new guitar player, and now its pretty much me and the orginal guy who write the stuff, and the the others have no problem playing whatever we write, they just want to play!

This is my last year at uni and id like to get some jamming done, in terms of ability, completely self taught on both piano and guitar but i can play every coldplay song in kapones thread without error, including the rediculously tuned GPASUPY and spies. Same with piano i can play clocks/trouble/SOS/green eyes (pretty much every coldplay song which uses a piano) and it only takes me a couple of hours to learn a new song. Been learning both since October

 

Confidence is a big thing though, like i said i dont want to start corresponding with people then meet up and them say "you really arent up to it"

 

I should also say i can read sheet music fine, sight reading is a bit of a chore but my method is just to learn by memory.

 

By learn by memory i mean i get the sheet music, transcribe the notes from bass/treble onto them into their corresponding notes (a, g# etc) and play like that, quickest way of learning ive found.

its kinda hard to find someone who has the same music taste you have but still after some time that taste can change.If im right Guy had a different taste of music i think before he joined Coldplay. But the golden rule is that you have to be good friends with your bandmates or it doesnt work

really? Sweet, it is the easiest way to learn for me as its so easy to recognise notes over sight reading which takes me more time, doable, but more of a chore.

Ooh i do love reign of love, such a lovely simple song to play, i use that and clocks as my warm up when i start playing

i play reign of love every night right before i go to sleep. It became an obsession for me:)

last song i usually play is imagine by lennon, that or hey jude

i can't play clocks anymore :lol: well i can but i got so annoyed of people coming up to me and going

 

"i can play piano now!" and it'd be clocks that they would play everytime :lol: i think it ruined that song for me :(
