Holding a door open for someone is just normal manners though really, I would not consider it a good thing, just something I will do without thinking about it.

What that little girl did was really kind though:)

that's what should be, a thing we do without thinking it, but a lot of people never does that.

another good thing i do:

i never use the lift at my uni 'cause:

there's always a lot of lazy young students who use it causing that people really need to use it (women with babies, workers that have to deliver some materials) have to wait and plus they waste time and energy. :dozey:

when at school they asked us to bring some food for charity (for instance to send it to a country that has had some catastrophe like: a Tornado, Tsumani... or is on a civil war or something like that), we (i mean my parents and I) were always the ones that brought most and more variated things. I'm happy that it had helped someone.

I think that sometimes we (my generation and first-world people) don't release of the good luck we have, and we complain about meaningless things.

btw about the welcome / smile old people, i always did that, and helped them to carry the bags of shopping, or went to walk with them. :nice:

i never expected anything in return, just to bring them some happiness and make they feel good. :D but at times i got some candies. :wacky:

happened with one of them, that after some years we became friends and one day my friends asked me: do you know that woman? why for?... and i really didn't knew what to answer them, i saw it a normal thing. :)

but to be honest, i don't use to give money to beggars, i don't know what they'll do with the money so.. :uhoh: if i would give them some money to help them to ruin more their lives (if they are drunkers for instance)... i prefer to give them food if they are begging for help, at times i give them money but not so often really. :embarassed:

i didn't helped them for candies, i just said that at times (very few times) they gave me candies... they are the older neigbours i had... and most them didn't had the chance to see their grandsons and granddaugthers as often as they can see me, and the same the other way round in my case so it was good for both the old people and I. :nice:

i'm glad that my company made them happy :D

They adviced me and everything and i still remember what they've told me.

I really miss one of them, she was a good woman, but she went a bit mad on her last years. :\ i mean her mind wasn't not right.

I agree with you, it's just something I will do and when people hold a door for me I will always say thank you.I don't use lifts very often either :)

I know you didnt :P

I only get to see my grandparents once a year.. I miss them !

a friend of mine 'saved' someone's life today. She was at the bus stop alone with an old lady this afternoon. I was worried because she didnt come to class. but later, she told me the old lady fainted in front of her. there was no one around. so my friend just sat on the floor and put the old lady's head on her thighs. And of course she called an ambulance.

I would've freaked out and would've had no clue of what to do ! crazy !

The other day I was in the bus and I saw that little girl walking down the street with her school bag on the back. I'm sure she wasn't more than 10 years old. The bus stopped because the light was red, so I had time to look through the window. Suddenly she stopped walking and took her wallet off her pocket. There was a beggar sitted on the floor with a sign asking for food and money. And the little girl just gave her money and then kept on walking.

I was so impressed and touched. And also felt kinda guilty. I mean she was a little girl, and how kind and generous that was of her. Although, it's not like she saved the world. but man, it got me thinking !

and now, I just wonder. When was the last time you did something good ? gave to charity ? donate some of your blood ? hold the door for someone behind ? gave up your seat in the bus to someone else ? said someone you care about/your friends/relatives that you like them ? texted someone you havent seen in a long time just to check if they're okay ?

these small things that if you just take the time to do them will make your day slightly better. just think about it.

anyway, I just felt like putting this out.

Awwwwwwwww that was so sweet! :nice:

I always wonder if the people around me usually care about those kind of things. Such as caring for other people's beings, being nice, etc. Because, honestly, I have no faith in people my age here at home. It just seems like everything is ME ME ME and no one cares about the others who need help. I try to be more aware of the world around me and give a helping hand. I love going to soup kitchens or wrapping gifts for little kids. I sure as hell am not a saint, but I'd to be a good person and help others.

I guess at work I am doing a good thing. I mean, I'm not one of those kids who mope and say 'I hate life' but I actually work with a smile on my face and try to help up customers. Even at school, if I see a kid that's alone, I start wondering 'how come they are alone? They need a friend!' and I start being friendly towards them. Much so, in fact, that I ended up liking one of the guys that I started being nice to. :stunned: Needless to say nothing worked out, but he's a good friend now. :) I love being there for him and making him feel comfortable.

This is probably a perfect time for this thread. I mean, of course gratitude and niceness is welcomed all year 'round, but there's something about the holidays that invokes good feeling and warm-heartedness. :nice: I plan on baking lots of goodies for teachers, friends, and family!

This actually reminds me of the movie 'Amelie', and how after she finds that man's childhood treasures she's inspired to change other people's lives. :nice: I'd like to think of myself as an Amelie.

She was choking on her tongue in her sleep

she would have died if I hadn't heard her

dude, i didn't even know this was possible :stunned:

i always feel guilty because i tend to shy away from helping out once it involves giving money or whatever. i tend to feel really iffy about giving money to beggars and all, because i don't know what they're going to do with it :\

however, i've given money to oxfam, the barack obama campaign (i don't really think that's a "charity," though), amnesty international, and maybe a few others. i've donated tons of things throughout my lifetime, and a hell of a lot of my time, which is always a nice thing. one of the best things i ever did was go to philadelphia for two weeks to work with recovering crack addicts.

as for day-to-day stuff, though, i always hold doors, i tend to let people go ahead of me a lot when i'm driving or walking or standing in line, and i'm always as polite as i can be, because it costs me nothing and tends to make things a hell of a lot nicer :D

This is a really nice thread, Chavi! :nice:

I'm going to start mentoring a young girl next week, which I am very excited about. I don't know who I will be paired with yet, but the children in it often have self-esteem problems and need a positive role model. I really hope I can help out! :)

Also, my friend told me about this website yesterday:

donorschoose.org

It might only be open to people who can donate in USD, but basically you can choose to donate money to a classroom of students who need certain learning materials that they can't otherwise afford. I don't have a ton of money, but I think something like this is a really amazing cause. :nice:

I've always wanted to donate blood. Out of all the things I could do, I really really want to donate blood... and I don't know why. I'm terrified of needles though, I nearly faint when I see them- I absolutely can't stand them. It's one of my goals to donate blood someday, though, (even if it has to be forced from me :P) and hopefully that way I can also get over my fear.

I like to walk around downtown San Diego and put money in expired parking meters. :)

I remember one day I was walking around with a friend and she found 10 dollars on the floor, picked them up and put them in her pocket. Then she put them in the first charity box she saw, and said nothing about it, but I saw her and I thought it was awesome. A couple of months ago, the same thing happened to me. I thought about keeping them, but I remembered what she did, and I gave it to this lady who had two little kids and was asking for money. It felt awesome. :)

Pay it Forward!

I want to as well. I'm 17 and I could, except I'm underweight. :dozey: Agh. You have to be at least 110 or 120 lbs, or something like that. I'm terrified of needles as well, but I feel like it's worth it if I could help someone out there.

:\ pity. but at least, you want to. So many people could do it, but dont..

I'm scared of needles as well. and you should know that the needles they use to get your blood is BIG.. scary ! I never look when it goes in.. but yeah, it's definitely worth it. suffer for ten minutes to maybe save someone's live is priceless !

DONATE YOUR BLOOD PEOPLE ! :)

and get inspired ! (reminds me a blog of Pete from Oxfam :nice:)
